Background / History

Soul Rings are essential components of the Soul Master cultivation system. A Soul Master generally requires a new ring after advancing through each ten-level Soul Power threshold; the ring allows further cultivation and grants a corresponding Soul Skill 9.

A Soul Ring normally comes from a Soul Beast after it is killed. The Soul Master then attempts to absorb the manifested ring, with the difficulty determined by factors including the ring’s age, the user’s physical constitution, and the spiritual pressure involved 4 26 47 60.

The accepted limit for a first Soul Ring is described as roughly 423 years. Luo Fan challenges this standard by absorbing a thousand-year ring as his first, a feat attributed to his extraordinary physique 3 4 6. His later rings continue to exceed conventional expectations, reaching four thousand years for his second ring, ten thousand years for his third, and thirty thousand years for his fourth 26 47 60. His fifth ring comes from a Xuanwu Beast over fifty thousand years old, while his sixth comes from a seventy-thousand-year Bewitching Soul Beast 100 148.

Luo Fan’s unusual configuration attracts attention beyond his immediate companions. His thousand-year first ring prompts Qian Renxue to order the Notting City Spirit Hall Branch to monitor his development. Later, Bibi Dong is astonished by reports of his purple, purple, black, black configuration and his advancement to Level 42 just over three years after awakening his Martial Soul 6 68.

Soul Beast hunting is not the only documented means of obtaining rings. Xiao Wu, a transformed Soul Beast, condenses her fourth Soul Ring herself when her Soul Power reaches the appropriate threshold 137.

Properties

Soul Skill Granting

Each Soul Ring grants a Soul Skill when successfully absorbed.

• Luo Fan’s first ring grants Wood Clone Technique, allowing him to create four intelligent clones that can speak, think, cultivate, and fight 4 5.
• His second ring grants Summoning Technique: Rashomon, which creates a massive defensive gate and later supports summoning contracts with Soul Beasts 26 32.
• His third ring grants Deep Forest Emergence, creating a vast forest capable of restraining, strangling, and draining opponents 48.
• His fourth ring grants Sage Mode, which combines Soul Power with natural energy and greatly enhances perception, physical ability, movement, and combat power 61 62.
• His fifth ring grants Sage Body, a passive ability that transforms his physique, provides extraordinary endurance and self-healing, and allows his body to consume Soul Power for further strengthening 100 102 105 148.
• His sixth ring grants Four Red Yang Formation, a formation requiring four Wood Clones that combines control and defense 148.

For ordinary Soul Masters, the precise Soul Skill obtained is highly random. Selecting a Soul Beast can guide the general category and development direction of a Martial Soul, but does not guarantee a particular ability. Yu Xiaogang explains that even another Datura Snake ring of the same age would not necessarily grant Tang San Entanglement or a poison-related skill 1 11.

Luo Fan is an exception because his Hashirama Senju template identifies his future Soul Skills before they are unlocked. Obtaining the corresponding Soul Rings enables him to access those predetermined abilities 1 19 48 97.

The seventh Soul Ring is a special case within the system: every Soul Master’s seventh Soul Skill is Martial Soul Avatar. This makes advancement to Soul Sage an especially important dividing line in cultivation 35 138.

Age and Color

A Soul Ring’s color indicates its approximate age and power tier within the documented system.

• White — Ten-Year Soul Ring 14.
• Yellow — Hundred-Year Soul Ring 5 14.
• Purple — Thousand-Year Soul Ring 4 6.
• Black — Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Ring, including rings tens of thousands of years old 47 51 60 148.
• Red — Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring 53 129.

Luo Fan’s fourth ring is also black despite originating from a thirty-thousand-year Soul Beast 60 61. The same color applies to his fifth ring, over fifty thousand years old, and his seventy-thousand-year sixth ring. Consequently, black rings can differ considerably in age and power despite sharing a color 100 105 148.

Soul Power Advancement

Absorbing a higher-quality Soul Ring can produce a substantial increase in Soul Power.

• Luo Fan’s first ring raises him three levels, from Level 10 to Level 13 4.
• His second ring raises him three levels, from Level 20 to Level 23 26.
• His third ring raises him three levels, from Level 30 to Level 33; the amount of energy gained is described as equivalent to roughly seven or eight ordinary levels 47.
• His fourth ring raises him two levels, from Level 40 to Level 42, reflecting the increasing Soul Power required at higher stages 61.
• His fifth ring, together with the Xuanwu Beast’s torso Soul Bone, initially raises him from Level 50 to Level 53. Most of the gained Soul Power is then absorbed by his flesh and cells as part of the Sage Body’s development, reducing his level to 51 without undoing his breakthrough 100.
• His sixth ring raises him from Level 60 to Level 62 while also supplying energy to strengthen his Sage Body. Afterward, he estimates that his total Soul Power reserves exceed a Soul Sage’s and are comparable in quantity to those of a Soul Douluo 148.
• Oscar’s yellow first ring raises him to Level 12 29.
• Su Yuntao’s roughly fifteen-hundred-year third ring raises him to Level 32 45.
• Qian Renxue’s seventy-thousand-year Holy Light Unicorn ring raises her to Level 63 after she acquires it as her sixth ring 92 96.

Normally, an absorbed ring’s power merges into the Martial Soul to raise Soul Power and enable a breakthrough. Luo Fan’s Sage Body alters this distribution by diverting a substantial portion into his physical body instead 100 148.

Absorption Limits and Risks

Soul Ring absorption is physically and spiritually dangerous, especially when the ring greatly exceeds conventional limits.

• Su Yuntao states that a thousand-year first ring would normally be impossible for an ordinary Soul Master 3.
• Luo Fan’s thousand-year first ring places considerable pressure on his body, but his physique allows him to endure it 4.
• Ten-thousand-year rings generate intense spiritual attacks and negative emotions from the deceased Soul Beast 47.
• Xue Qinghe suffers spiritual injury after absorbing a ten-thousand-year fourth ring 33.
• Luo Fan’s thirty-thousand-year fourth ring produces Soul Shock, though he successfully withstands it 60 61.
• A ring beyond the absorber’s limits can cause an ordinary person’s body to explode. Soul Bones differ in that high-age bones do not impose the same absorption restriction, although an insufficiently powerful user may be unable to fully utilize their skills 41.
• The lingering consciousness of the Xuanwu Beast continues attacking Luo Fan mentally during his fifth-ring absorption before finally dissipating 100.
• By his sixth-ring acquisition, Luo Fan can absorb a seventy-thousand-year ring in a few minutes with little strain 148.

Physical endurance alone does not guarantee safe absorption of a ten-thousand-year ring. Qian Renxue’s Whale Rubber-enhanced physique meets the physical requirements for her fourth ring, but does not prevent the resulting Soul Shock from injuring her mind 33. Before his third-ring hunt, Luo Fan also distinguishes between animal- and plant-type targets, considering an approximately nine-thousand-year animal ring or a ten-thousand-year plant ring, while Xue Qinghe urges caution because of Soul Shock 46.

Ring Configuration and Martial Soul Compatibility

Yu Xiaogang describes the conventional optimal sequence as yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, with a black ten-thousand-year ring normally becoming appropriate at the fifth-ring Soul King stage 9. Zhao Wuji displays the seven-ring configuration yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, which is likewise described as optimal 24.

Luo Fan repeatedly departs from this standard:

Twin Martial Souls permit a different approach to ring acquisition. Yu Xiaogang advises Tang San to cultivate one Martial Soul first and delay attaching rings to his Clear Sky Hammer until his stronger body can withstand ten-thousand-year rings, allowing even the hammer’s first ring to be black 9. Bibi Dong demonstrates an advanced configuration of this kind: her first spider-type Martial Soul has nine rings, while her second has seven rings beginning with black ten-thousand-year rings 129.

• Datura Snake Ring — Tang San’s roughly four-hundred-year first ring; grants an entangling ability 5.
• Nightmare Bat Ring — Selected for Oscar because it might grant a recovery ability to his support-type Sausage Martial Soul. He successfully absorbs a yellow ring and gains a sausage that gives its consumer a long-lasting lifesteal effect, converting a proportion of damage dealt into healing rather than requiring literal blood-drinking 26 29.
• Gale Wolf Ring — A roughly fifteen-hundred-year ring absorbed by Su Yuntao as his third ring, raising him to Level 32. Its earlier description as two thousand years old is explicitly corrected in Chapter 45 40 44 45.
• Ten-Thousand-Year Ring — Xue Qinghe absorbs one as her fourth ring, suffering significant spiritual strain despite her improved physique 33.
• Holy Light Unicorn Ring — Qian Renxue’s seventy-thousand-year sixth ring; its absorption raises her Soul Power to Level 63 92 96.
• Frost-Covered Peacock Bird Ring — Shui Bing’er’s second ring, obtained from a bird over six hundred years old. Killing it causes its flock to pursue her and Ning Bi 98.
• Xiao Wu’s Self-Condensed Fourth Ring — A purple ring that forms around Xiao Wu when she reaches the fourth-ring threshold; afterward, she reaches Level 43 with a yellow, yellow, purple, purple configuration 137 140.
• Tang Hao’s Ninth Ring — A red hundred-thousand-year ring displayed when he reveals his nine Soul Rings to Tang San 53.
