Chapter 21
Knowing Berkeley had not been exaggerating after all, Wong hesitated.
He looked at Zhang Yang.
He neither spoke nor showed any expression.
That left Zhang Yang unable to read him.
"Wong, what's wrong?" Zhang Yang asked when he saw Wong spacing out.
However, Wong said nothing.
Zhang Yang had no idea what was wrong with Wong, but Berkeley knew.
Arch-Sorcerer Wong had just been testing Zhang Yang's abilities. He had never expected Zhang Yang, who had only been studying for three days, to leave Wong completely dumbfounded.
Sigh.
Back then.
He had worn that same expression too.
Berkeley thoroughly understood Wong's feelings at that moment.
So Berkeley hurried to Wong's side and whispered into his ear, "Arch-Sorcerer, it's fine. You'll get used to it. There's always a gap between people."
Berkeley earnestly comforted Wong.
Those words pulled Wong from his thoughts.
Wong shot Berkeley a glare, then turned his gaze to Zhang Yang.
With his hands clasped behind his back, he began circling Zhang Yang and studying him.
He went around him three or four times in a row, nearly making Zhang Yang dizzy.
Unable to stand it any longer, Zhang Yang asked Wong, "Wong, aren't you getting dizzy from spinning around like that?"
Wong finally stopped.
Come to think of it, he really was a little dizzy.
"You're the most outstanding among this batch of Apprentices. Otherwise, you wouldn't have come to me."
Wong was a very straightforward man.
Not only was he straightforward, but he was also honest and not very good at lying.
He simply could not bring himself to fool Zhang Yang by claiming he was ordinary.
But if he told him everything, he was afraid Zhang Yang would become too arrogant. So Wong gave him a very fair assessment.
That assessment was not false.
Zhang Yang truly was the best among this batch of Apprentices.
But to say Zhang Yang was the most exceptional magic Apprentice since Kamar-Taj's founding would not have been false either.
The sudden praise left Zhang Yang somewhat flattered.
"Thank you, Wong. Senior Brother Berkeley has always said I'm ordinary. You're the first person to praise me." Zhang Yang smiled at Wong.
What the hell?
Ordinary?
You called Zhang Yang's talent ordinary?
Then what did that make the rest of us?
Wong turned and glared at Berkeley.
Berkeley nearly burst into tears.
He did not want to do it either. He just did not want Zhang Yang getting too full of himself.
Although Wong felt somewhat indignant on Zhang Yang's behalf over Berkeley's assessment, he understood Berkeley's intentions. He said to Zhang Yang, "Senior Brother Berkeley simply doesn't want you to become too arrogant. Those who cultivate train their hearts. Let me ask you something now. What was your purpose in coming to Kamar-Taj? How do you see yourself?"
Wong's question made Zhang Yang fall into thought.
At first, Zhang Yang's goal had been simple.
He just wanted to survive in the Marvel world.
But now, Zhang Yang wanted to become stronger.
Marvel had bosses on Thanos's level, as well as Omega-level Mutants.
Zhang Yang wanted to learn more magic. If he could establish himself at Kamar-Taj, then he would basically be invincible on Earth.
As for why he had come to Kamar-Taj... that had not been his original intention either. He had woken up after a nap and found himself here. There was nothing he could do about it.
"Wong, I want to study the Mystic Arts properly at Kamar-Taj and protect myself and the people important to me." Zhang Yang spoke sincerely.
With no grand ambitions and such a plain, unvarnished answer, Wong gave the young Zhang Yang high approval in his heart.
Wong patted Zhang Yang on the shoulder. "I hope you stay true to your original intention, and only then can you see things through. Now, I'll teach you Portal Magic."
"I'm sure you're wondering why I need to teach you when you've already learned Portals."
"Once you've heard what I have to say, you'll understand."
Chapter 22
Seeing Wong's serious expression, Zhang Yang could not help becoming serious as well.
Berkeley beside them listened even more intently.
Arch-Sorcerer Wong was giving a lesson.
Aside from The Ancient One, Wong was the most knowledgeable person in Kamar-Taj.
Even if he were just talking nonsense, attending one lesson would still bring immense benefits!
"When learning magic, what matters most is not what lies on the surface, but what lies deeper. Look past appearances, and you can see the essence of things."
Wong stood before Zhang Yang and gave him his first lesson.
"Portals are Kamar-Taj's basic introductory magic, but they are also among the most practical forms of magic."
"Across the entire Multiverse, along the timeline of our Universe, there are eleven dimensions in total. We exist in three-dimensional space."
"If dimensions are difficult for you to understand, you can call them Other-Dimensional Spaces."
"Other-Dimensional Spaces are spaces that exist on the same universal timeline as us, yet where life does not exist in the same place. Portals may seem basic, but they are actually controlled by the strength of your own abilities. The pinnacle of Portal Magic is opening them without restriction."
"Simply put, it means doing as you please. As long as you want to go somewhere, no place can stop you—not merely places on Earth."
Wong looked at Zhang Yang and spoke seriously.
When he finished, Wong raised his hand and drew a Portal.
As the Portal opened, a fierce gust of wind and sand swept into the Kamar-Taj Library.
Beyond the Portal lay a barren desert, where a sandstorm howled through the sky.
"This is an Other-Dimensional Space, the Wasteland. It is also where Kamar-Taj exiles those guilty of heinous crimes. Once your abilities reach a certain level, you can decide a Portal's distance and size, just like this..."
As Wong spoke, he gently pushed forward with his hand.
The Portal floating in the air shot swiftly toward Berkeley.
Berkeley vanished from the Kamar-Taj Library before he could even make a sound.
Although Zhang Yang had seen Doctor Strange and the others use Portals countless times in the movies.
This was the first time he had watched it up close.
The feeling of seeing it in person was still incredibly shocking.
So shocking that Zhang Yang felt a little excited.
After completing that series of actions, Wong clapped his hands and said to Zhang Yang, "However, there are certain restrictions on using Portals. You must know the exact coordinates and clearly visualize the scene. Of course, for certain Other-Dimensional Spaces protected by clearly established barriers, if you wish to open a Portal, you must either forcibly break the barrier or know the barrier's incantation. If that's difficult to understand, think of it as a password."
Wong looked at Zhang Yang.
For the current Zhang Yang, the best thing Wong could think of was to have him study Portal Magic.
No matter how great Zhang Yang's comprehension was.
No matter how quickly he learned Portals, an ability that broke through dimensional space would still require a period of study.
This kind of breakthrough across dimensions.
Could be called Space Magic.
But after learning it, it could only be said that you could run faster than others. It had no real practical use.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Zhang Yang while The Ancient One had yet to return and make a decision.
This magic was the most suitable for him.
"All right, go back and think it over first. I hope you can give me a surprise tomorrow." Wong looked at Zhang Yang.
After speaking, Wong was about to return to his desk and continue reading when he suddenly remembered something. He quickly raised his hand and opened a Portal.
Bang!
With a soft thud.
A bedraggled Berkeley emerged from the Portal and crashed to the floor, sprawled on his back.
He looked up and saw that his hair and clothes were covered in yellow sand.
It seemed the Wasteland was not a very pleasant place to stay.
"I'm very sorry." Wong looked at Berkeley, though there was not the slightest hint of apology in his tone.
"Arch-Sorcerer, why did you have to use me as your demonstration during class..." Berkeley asked, on the verge of tears.
Wong frowned and asked Berkeley seriously, "Should I have used Zhang Yang as the demonstration?!"
Berkeley froze.
He glanced at Zhang Yang's departing back as he left the Kamar-Taj Library.
He thought about it.
"All right. Next time you need a demonstration, tell me beforehand so I can prepare myself mentally." Berkeley climbed to his feet and dusted the sand from his clothes.
There was no helping it.
A genius like Zhang Yang, a magical freak like him.
If Wong used him as a demonstration, he probably would not have the heart to do it.
Talents like that generally needed to be carefully protected. Sigh.
Berkeley sighed, then looked at Wong curiously and asked, "Arch-Sorcerer, what did you teach Zhang Yang?"
Wong sat at the desk and said, "I told him to master Portal Magic to the point of perfection."
Berkeley's expression changed in shock. "What?! Arch-Sorcerer, don't tell me you want him to break through into Other-Dimensional Spaces with Portals?!"
Wong nodded.
Berkeley could not help swallowing.
Portals might be basic magic, but... crossing into Other-Dimensional Spaces was absolutely advanced magic!
Generally speaking, only those who had reached the rank of Master Sorcerer could learn it.
He had not even started learning it yet!
Zhang Yang had only been here for three days and was already starting. It was enough to make him jealous, envious, and bitter!
Berkeley sighed, then suddenly seemed to remember something. "What if he goes back tonight and comprehends it right away?"
Before you continue
