Background

Wong is one of Kamar-Taj’s top ten Arch-Sorcerers and has served for years as the administrator of its library, whose collection includes forbidden Dark Magic texts. His knowledge of the Mystic Arts is considered second only to the Ancient One’s, despite his inability to master every spell he has studied. 13

He is descended from Kan, an Eastern monk who pledged his family line to serve the Sorcerer Supreme after meeting the Ancient One. This inherited duty is the basis of the Ancient One’s deep trust in Wong. 27

Wong first becomes involved with Zhang Yang’s training after Berkeley reports that the new apprentice independently learned Portal Magic. Concerned that such uncontrolled talent could be recruited by Dormammu, Wong initially supports Berkeley’s efforts to slow Zhang Yang’s progress until the Ancient One returns. 8

After Berkeley transfers Zhang Yang to him, Wong tests the apprentice with the Rings of Raggadorr and confirms that the reports of Zhang Yang’s talent were not exaggerated. He assumes responsibility for Zhang Yang’s instruction while remaining wary of granting him unrestricted access to Kamar-Taj’s knowledge. 13

He is highly protective of Zhang Yang. Wong repeatedly defends him against Mordo’s suspicions, accepts responsibility when Zhang Yang accidentally opens a Portal to Asgard, and later treats Zhang Yang’s safety as more important than sacrificing him for Kamar-Taj’s survival. 15 16 260

Despite his formal position, Wong is prone to exasperation and jealousy when confronted with Zhang Yang’s impossible achievements. He often reacts with disbelief, frustration, or sarcastic humor, particularly when Zhang Yang casually creates legendary artifacts or masters advanced magic. 51 55

Wong investigates Berkeley’s reports about Zhang Yang’s abnormal talent, then takes over Zhang Yang’s education after Zhang Yang cuts Mount Everest’s summit with Magic Ray. 8 12 13

He tests Zhang Yang’s character as well as his ability, approving of Zhang Yang’s wish to protect himself and those important to him. Wong then assigns Portal Magic because it seems useful while posing limited danger to Earth. 14 15

Asgard Incident and Chitauri Invasion

When Zhang Yang accidentally opens a Portal into Asgard, Wong stands in front of his apprentice despite fearing Odin. Afterward, he encourages Zhang Yang to see Earth and Kamar-Taj as his home worth defending. 15 16 19

Wong witnesses Zhang Yang turn the fabricated Fear Magic into a real spell capable of terrifying the Chitauri army into retreat and closing its wormhole. He then publicly vouches for Zhang Yang’s achievements before the Kamar-Taj council. 26

Combat Training

Following the Ancient One’s decision to retain Zhang Yang, Wong begins serious close-combat instruction. He presents Military Boxing as a test of Zhang Yang’s comprehension and risks his own standing to prove Zhang Yang is not a dark-force spy. 30 31

The ensuing spar reveals Zhang Yang’s overwhelming physical growth: Zhang Yang shatters Wong’s red Ring of Raggadorr barehanded, and Wong later admits that he could not hurt or restrain him. 33 36

Artifact and Spatial-Magic Incidents

Wong is the first to recognize that Zhang Yang’s casually forged sword is the legendary Sword in the Stone. He brings the matter to Mordo and later attempts to keep Zhang Yang from using the weapon recklessly. 51 54

He also supervises Zhang Yang’s spatial training, only to witness him create the Mirror Dimension and reshape an entire Sanctum with Spatial Distortion Magic after four days of study. 55

Protector of the Future Sorcerer Supreme

When Kamar-Taj loses its magic and faces threats from both the Eternal Emperor and S.H.I.E.L.D., Wong refuses to accept Zhang Yang’s proposed sacrifice. He openly identifies Zhang Yang as the future Sorcerer Supreme and attempts to stop him from confronting the Eternal Emperor. 260 261

Library Theft

Much later, Wong is distracted while listening to music in the Kamar-Taj Library, allowing Mordo to stage an intrusion and steal a book. Mordo convinces Wong not to report the incident, and Wong becomes more vigilant in his library duties after the book is returned. 344 345
