Background

Zhang Yang arrived at Kamar-Taj under unexplained circumstances. The Ancient One had never encountered or recruited him during her travels, leaving his origin outside Kamar-Taj’s normal system of apprenticeship unresolved. He avoided explaining how he arrived, while the Ancient One chose not to press him immediately. 38

Initially, Zhang’s goal was survival. Aware that he had transmigrated into a world filled with supervillains, cosmic threats, and powerful magic users, he concluded that Kamar-Taj was the safest place available until he could defend himself. His ambition later broadened into mastering the Mystic Arts to protect both himself and those important to him. 2 14

His first lessons immediately exposed an abnormal level of comprehension. After Berkeley demonstrated Magic Ray, Zhang formed both the ray and a Magic Shield; within days, he had independently developed hundreds of Weapon Magic forms, Crimson Chains, Portal Magic, and advanced defensive spells. The Ancient One eventually made Zhang her direct disciple, personally guiding him through advanced magic while assessing the danger of his unexplained power. Although she selected him as Kamar-Taj’s successor, she later expelled him in an attempt to protect Earth from the Eternal Emperor’s hostility. He is intensely diligent and highly literal-minded. Berkeley’s attempt to slow his progress by ordering him to sleep instead led Zhang to reflect overnight and learn Portal Magic. Although normally polite and calm, Zhang is defiant toward beings who seek to control or exploit him.
