Although Wong thought Berkeley was being a little ridiculous, what he said did make sense.
Now that things had come to this, there was nothing they could do.
"Could Zhang Yang really go back for one night and figure it out?" Wong suddenly asked suspiciously.
"Impossible. Could he really figure out magic we made up on the spot?" Berkeley shook his head in disbelief.
No matter how gifted he was, he could not possibly be that gifted! If Zhang Yang actually learned it, that would not just mean he had good comprehension!
Wouldn't that mean he could create magic? How could that be allowed?
Then forget Wong being unable to keep him in check—perhaps even the Sorcerer Supreme would not be able to restrain him!
"Impossible. Even the Sorcerer Supreme cannot create magic!" Berkeley waved his hand.
Wong frowned and pondered for a while.
That was true. After all, Kamar-Taj's magic all relied on the power of Vishanti.
No matter how talented Zhang Yang was, he could not possibly break away from Vishanti.
Vishanti were gods.
Ancient gods even more terrifying than Odin, primordial Old Gods formed from a trinity—the origin gods of magic.
It was not very realistic for Zhang Yang to break free of Vishanti's power.
"But what if he doesn't learn it and suspects that we're deceiving him?"
One problem had ended, and another new one had emerged.
And this problem might be even more serious.
If Zhang Yang really discovered that Kamar-Taj was deceiving him and teaching him nonsense, he would definitely leave in anger.
Wouldn't that backfire?
Wong could not help worrying about that.
"The Sorcerer Supreme will be back soon. Given Zhang Yang's talent, the Sorcerer Supreme should personally teach him then," Berkeley quickly said.
As for the explanation, that could only be left to the Sorcerer Supreme.
The blame that needed to be shifted still had to be shifted.
As for punishment, there was no helping it. They were definitely going to be punished.
Wong shot Berkeley a sidelong glance. "You bastard, you're never serious and always full of sneaky ideas. But I have to say, you really are cowardly and afraid of trouble. You're a professional when it comes to weak knees. That act just now was pretty convincing. You were just being yourself, weren't you?"
Berkeley scratched his head. "Couldn't be helped. Life forced me into it. Before coming to Kamar-Taj, I lived through too many hard times. When you're out on your own, you have to learn a few tricks to protect yourself from being bullied."
Wong looked at Berkeley.
For once, he heard a trace of bitterness in Berkeley's words.
Late at night, at the New York Sanctum.
The Ancient One was meditating in her room when she sensed a powerful aura and opened her eyes.
"What a rare guest."
The Ancient One softly exhaled.
A figure appeared out of thin air in the room, as if stepping from the void into reality.
In the blink of an eye, an old man in golden battle armor, holding a spear, with white beard and silver hair, appeared in the Ancient One's room.
"It has been centuries since we last met. To think the All-Father would set foot in this humble place of Kamar-Taj." The Ancient One slowly rose, bowed first, then smiled.
After all, Odin was a god of Asgard.
In terms of seniority, he was much older than the Ancient One. It was only natural for her to bow upon seeing Odin.
Still, Odin's sudden arrival shocked the Ancient One.
And naturally, it displeased her somewhat as well.
Though the Ancient One spoke humbly, her words carried a subtle warning.
She was reminding Odin that this was Kamar-Taj, and Kamar-Taj was her territory.
"I had no wish to set foot in the Sorcerer Supreme's domain. But today, someone from Kamar-Taj intruded into Asgard. What does the Sorcerer Supreme intend to do about this?"
Odin took a seat in the center of the room.
He did not act like a stranger at all.
Looking at the Ancient One, he asked sternly.
Though Odin looked kind and benevolent, he was not someone easy to deal with.
Someone from Kamar-Taj had managed to break into Asgard?
That was rather curious.
Had Odin grown too old to be useful?
Had Asgard's barriers been broken so easily?
The Ancient One's expression did not change. "Such a thing happened? I have not heard of it."
Those few simple words made Odin frown.
Well, well. The Ancient One was trying to deny it!
"You have watched Earth's past and future for so long. Have you not looked into Kamar-Taj?" Odin said coldly.
There was no emotion in his tone, but his words carried a hint of mockery.
The Ancient One chuckled. "The All-Father must be joking. Which mage of Kamar-Taj could possibly enter the All-Father's domain?"
Odin's frown deepened. "I heard it was an Apprentice who has studied magic for less than a week. He opened a Portal straight into my palace."
An Apprentice from Kamar-Taj?
Someone who had studied magic for less than a week had broken Odin's barriers and entered Asgard?
If he had entered through the Bifrost, that would have been one thing.
After all, the Bifrost, infused with Odin's Power, could lead to all kinds of Other-Dimensional Spaces.
But he had opened a Portal and entered on his own.
What the hell!
What was Asgard's Bifrost even for, then? They might as well chop it down.
The Ancient One thought so, but after thinking carefully, she did not remember recruiting any Apprentice with such extraordinary talent into Kamar-Taj.
Although she did not involve herself much in Kamar-Taj's daily affairs.
She still knew who entered Kamar-Taj and who its newcomers were.
After all, they were all people she had personally chosen.
But according to Odin.
An Apprentice who had studied magic for less than a week had opened a Portal to Asgard. The Ancient One had truly never encountered a mage with such extreme talent.
In the Ancient One's mind.
The most talented person should have been Doctor Strange, who was performing surgery several streets away.
This left the Ancient One rather puzzled. Looking at Odin, she thought to herself, A dignified All-Father would not possibly lie.
After all, beings at their level had to build their reputations across the Multiverse.
Could it be that the recent matter involving Dormammu's followers had drained too much of her attention?
Had she really failed to notice the new Apprentices entering Kamar-Taj?
The Ancient One raised a brow. "Kamar-Taj has such a remarkable Apprentice? All-Father, could you be joking with me?"
Though she believed Odin, the Ancient One could not truly admit it.
Otherwise, would Odin not think that she had allowed her disciple to do such a thing?
"It does not matter whether you know of this or not. But you must hand this person over to Asgard. Asgard is not a place one may enter and leave as they please." Odin slightly raised his chin, his gaze turning sharp as he finally revealed his purpose.
So the old man Odin had come to steal someone!
The Ancient One found it strange.
She and Odin had not met for centuries.
It was impossible that Odin had come to reminisce; their relationship was not good.
Had Odin come to demand an explanation because someone from Kamar-Taj had entered Asgard?
That did not suit the bearing of the All-Father.
Besides, with the Ancient One here, Odin would give her some face and let the matter go.
Yet now, Odin had personally come to her door to demand an explanation.
And after all that roundabout chatter with her, he was actually here to ask for an Apprentice?
That was completely unlike something Odin would do.
Where there was an anomaly, there was surely something suspicious.
The Ancient One was no pushover either. Both of them were old foxes who had lived for millennia.
The moment Odin said this, the Ancient One understood.
This Apprentice was definitely not ordinary.
She had not even taken a proper look at him, and Odin wanted to take him away immediately. That would not do.
"If a disciple of Kamar-Taj has offended the All-Father, then the Ancient One offers her apologies here. The All-Father has traversed the Nine Realms and shaken all lands with his might. The entire Multiverse knows of the All-Father's great name. To now argue with a disciple of Kamar-Taj would somewhat diminish your bearing. Once New York is stable, I will personally go to Asgard to apologize. What do you say?"
The Ancient One bowed and smiled.
The entire speech meant only one thing: Odin was not taking this person away.
The Ancient One was standing her ground against Odin.
But what puzzled the Ancient One was that Odin did not get angry.
On the contrary, the previously stern Odin gave a faint smile after hearing her words. "Very well."
Very well?
He did not want the person anymore?
No, he had gone through all the trouble of coming from Asgard to New York, made a scene, and was now preparing to leave?
He was not even going to take the person before leaving?
That left the Ancient One somewhat bewildered.
Still, she did not ask further. Seeing Odin turn as though he were about to leave, she bowed and politely said, "Farewell, All-Father."
But Odin suddenly spoke to the Ancient One in a deep voice. "Kamar-Taj cannot keep that child."
It was neither a heavy nor a light statement.
