Ch. 221Iwagakure in Chaos
Key plot points and events
- Fugaku infiltrates the expanded Iwagakure camp at night and detonates several rounds of explosive kunai, setting off alarms and plunging the camp into confusion.
- He disguises himself as a Stone shinobi and falsely warns that Konoha has infiltrated the camp, worsening the panic. When a jonin challenges him, Fugaku kills him.
- Ōnoki identifies Fugaku and orders the Iwa forces to converge on him. Fugaku uses Lava and Fire Release to attack the camp, then creates a shadow clone while disguising his real body to evade detection.
- The clone draws the attention of Zebon and the other pursuers before vanishing. The real Fugaku exploits the rain, smoke, and confusion to attack from within the crowd.
- Fugaku uses the Sharingan to catch opponents’ attention and strike them, wounding Zebon and killing several Stone shinobi. Ōnoki pursues him with Dust Release, forcing Fugaku to dodge an attack that erases everything inside its cubic field.
- Fugaku escapes toward the camp perimeter using Black Mist and another clone to misdirect his pursuers. He reaches the boundary, detonates more explosive kunai, and breaks out—but finds more shinobi blocking his path.
Character developments and interactions
- Fugaku demonstrates composure, improvisation, and tactical deception, combining disguises, clones, explosive weapons, and the Sharingan to exploit the camp’s disarray. Though he injures and kills pursuers, he remains under pressure from Ōnoki’s overwhelming power.
- Ōnoki responds decisively, recognizing Fugaku and coordinating the pursuit. His Dust Release makes clear that Fugaku cannot afford a direct confrontation.
- Zebon pursues Fugaku with personal intensity after being grazed by a kunai, but Fugaku’s evasive tactics and genjutsu repeatedly frustrate him.
- Furukawa joins Zebon in the hunt, while Iwa’s senior officials try to restore order by ordering squad captains to inspect for suspicious ninja. Fugaku’s disguise makes that task difficult.
Significant themes
- Deception and misdirection: Fugaku turns the enemy’s own suspicion against them and uses disguises and clones to conceal his position.
- Chaos as a weapon: Explosions, smoke, rain, and false warnings transform Iwagakure’s camp into an obstacle for its defenders.
- Cunning versus force: Fugaku relies on mobility and trickery to survive against Ōnoki’s destructive power and the numerically superior Iwa forces.
- The cost of confusion: Stone shinobi become vulnerable not only to Fugaku’s attacks but also to the disorder he creates.
Ending: Fugaku has escaped the camp itself, but the chapter ends with enemy shinobi blocking his way, leaving his escape unresolved.
