Ch. 381The Situation
Key events
- Konoha’s forces return after Kumogakure withdraws, ending the war for now.
- Advisor Mitokado Homura resigns, accepting responsibility for Konoha’s heavy losses during the invasion. The Third Hokage accepts, but says Homura’s achievements and failures balance out. He offers him a future role as Hokage’s assistant; Homura says the timing would be politically awkward and urges the Hokage to apologize to the Fire Daimyo.
- Koharu argues that Danzo deserves reinstatement for his contributions to the victories over Sunagakure and Kumogakure. The Hokage agrees in principle and calls a Jonin Meeting to vote on restoring Danzo as advisor and commander of Root.
- Fugaku learns that the Third Kazekage has resigned and will temporarily govern Sunagakure as an elder, a face-saving measure after the defeat.
- Fugaku’s allies discuss how the Uchiha should respond to Danzo’s possible return. Fugaku advises caution and proposes exploiting tensions between Danzo and the Hokage rather than confronting Danzo directly.
- Fugaku’s father, Tenjo, tells him Homura will also announce his resignation at the Jonin Meeting. Fugaku sees the move as a strategic retreat that may let Homura advance later.
Character developments and interactions
- Homura accepts responsibility and resigns to preserve the credibility of Konoha’s rules, despite Koharu’s defense of his wartime efforts. His friendship with the Hokage remains intact, and the Hokage seeks to keep him involved in village affairs.
- The Third Hokage balances accountability with loyalty: he accepts Homura’s resignation but recognizes his service, and supports Danzo’s return subject to a vote.
- Danzo leaves to address unfinished work on his spy plan; the others expect him to use the day before the vote to secure support.
- Fugaku shows patience and political calculation. He views Danzo as a threat to the Uchiha, but warns that either overt opposition or sudden support could expose the clan’s intentions. He plans to remain neutral unless Danzo approaches them first.
- Tenjo provides Fugaku with additional political intelligence, and their conversation reinforces Fugaku’s careful reading of public gestures and power plays.
Significant themes
- Accountability versus loyalty: Homura’s resignation upholds institutional standards, while the Hokage’s offer reflects personal trust and appreciation.
- Power and political maneuvering: Danzo’s expected reinstatement, Homura’s resignation, and the planned vote all involve managing influence and public perception.
- Pragmatism and deception: Fugaku favors patience, concealed intentions, and exploiting rivalries over direct confrontation.
- Public image and face-saving: Sunagakure’s leadership change and Homura’s resignation are presented partly as ways to manage political consequences.
