Background and History

Hua Yin grew up poor and isolated after his mother, Li Xiulin, left and his father died. Still attached to his mother despite their estrangement, he makes her a butterfly specimen album before a planned dinner 1 2.

On the way there, he draws a Jade-Bladed Mantis away from his injured class monitor, Lin Qingqiu. The beast pierces his chest and destroys the album; its scattered specimens transform into light, heal him, and trigger his S-rank awakening. He kills the mantis with the butterflies that emerge from his new power 2 3.

Hua Yin joins the Special Affairs Bureau in exchange for training, resources, and protection. His condition is that his mother and other relatives be kept out of the supernatural world until he can protect them himself. The Bureau gives him the codename White Butterfly, although he later asks teammate Sun Haoran to call him Hua Yin instead 5 11.
