Background and History

Old Jack, chief of Holy Soul Village, found Chu Chen as a swaddled baby and raised him. Chu Chen remained mentally muddled until age five, when his past-life memories returned and he recognized the Douluo Continent. His yearly Life Simulator lets him live a separate life on the Dou Qi Continent and retain three gains when that simulation ends. From his first simulation, he chose a Fire-Wood Attribute physique, a Dou Qi Condensation Method, and a Second-Rank Alchemist’s Soul Origin; these gave him the basis to cultivate Dou Qi in his new world 1.

At six, his awakening confirmed Innate Full Soul Power and two elemental Martial Souls. He kept the stronger fire-element soul hidden, while the wood-element soul appeared to others as mutated Blue Silver Grass. After repeated clashes with Tang San and Tang Hao over insults, violence, and Holy Soul Village’s academy place, Chu Chen enrolled at Notting City Junior Soul Master Academy 5 6 19 33 34.

When Tang Hao confronted him behind the academy, Chu Chen used a Fire Thunder Seed. The explosion killed Tang Hao but nearly killed Chu Chen as well. He survived by protecting his Heart Meridian with Soul Force, then spent months recovering under Madam Ye’s care. Once healed, he declined immediate recruitment by Spirit Hall and remained at the academy 42 43 46 49 51.

For his first Soul Ring, Chu Chen went alone to Star Dou Forest rather than the safer hunting ground he had named to Dean Wei. He let the reborn Blue Silver Emperor, Ah Yin, draw energy from nearby grass and her Spirit Bone before killing her and absorbing the resulting deep-purple ring. Its age was not precisely established, but Spirit Hall’s deacons judged it to be at least a thousand years old 59 64 65 66 73.

Personality

Chu Chen pairs ambition with practical caution. He chooses simulator rewards he can use, hides abilities that would invite dangerous attention, and tests new powers before relying on them. His willingness to hunt alone or face stronger opponents does not stop him from preparing escape measures and concealed weapons 1 15 42 47 59 70.

He is grateful to people who help him, particularly Old Jack and those who saved him after the explosion. He is also quick to retaliate when he believes someone has threatened or disrespected them—or him. His repeated fights with Tang San and his treatment of the academy gatekeeper trouble Old Jack, despite the loyalty behind them 2 23 31 56 57.

Abilities and Skills

Dual-element Martial Souls

• Wood element — Resembles Blue Silver Grass and can be manifested without difficulty. After absorbing Ah Yin’s ring, its leaves develop pale-gold lines and a stronger aura of life 26 34 67.
• Fire element — The stronger but more demanding Martial Soul. Before gaining Soul Rings, merely manifesting it rapidly drains Chu Chen’s Soul Power; he can reinforce its flames with Dou Qi 26 34 65.
• Cultivation choice — He places his first ring on the wood-element soul, intending to reserve stronger future rings for the fire-element soul 34 66.

Dou Qi and Soul Force

• Dou Qi tempers his body and can be used alongside Soul Power. During his first-ring absorption, Soul Power draws in the ring while Dou Qi shields his strained meridians 8 66.
• Soul Force provides wide-ranging perception, helps him sense energy and terrain, and protects his Heart Meridian during the Fire Thunder Seed explosion. After taking in a Fourth-Rank High-Grade Alchemist’s Soul Origin, he judges it comparable to a Fifth-Rank Alchemist’s 15 25 43 46.
• Cultivation limit — Before obtaining a Soul Ring, part of his advancing Dou Qi cannot be converted into Soul Power, though his Dou Qi cultivation continues 19 34.

Everlasting Domain

His first Soul Technique gathers Heaven and Earth Vital Energy through nearby plants and directs its benefits to selected targets 67 68 72.

• Strengthens the target’s Soul Power circulation and output while gradually replenishing Soul Power during combat 72.
• Improves energy absorption during meditation; Chu Chen can refine the gathered energy into either Soul Power or Dou Qi 68 69.
• Lets him sense plants within its reach, including the weak points of Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass restraints 67 76.
• Works best among numerous healthy plants. It still gathers some energy on bare ground, but much less; boosting more people also places a greater demand on his current reserves 70 72.
• Does not remove the immediate Soul Power cost of an attack or protect him from an opponent who can overwhelm him outright 72.

• Life Simulator — Grants one simulation opportunity each year, with a choice of three identities and three retained gains from the completed life 1.
• Flame Ji Ring — Storage ring used for his weapons and recovered treasures 15 49.
• Fire Thunder Seeds — Received three in one simulator reward. He uses one against Tang Hao; its blast also leaves him critically injured 15 42 43.
• Spirit Bones and Ah Yin’s remains — Recovers six Spirit Bones associated with Tang Hao, plus a lead box containing the Blue Silver Emperor and her hundred-thousand-year right leg Spirit Bone. Ah Yin later draws energy from that bone 46 49 62.
• Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges storage belt — Takes it from Yu Xiaogang, reclaims it after Yu passes it to Tang San, then exchanges it through Seven Treasure Commerce for credit and storage-stone necklaces 33 53 56.
• Seven Treasure Commerce Gold Card — Allows withdrawal of fifty thousand gold coins at the company’s branches 56.

Relationships

• Old Jack — Adoptive grandfather and Holy Soul Village chief. Chu Chen wants to repay his care and repeatedly acts to protect him 1 2 23 31.
• Tang San — Fellow villager and recurring rival. Their conflict begins over unwanted nicknames and escalates through multiple fights 5 8 76.
• Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and a Titled Douluo whom Chu Chen regards as a grave threat; Tang Hao dies in their confrontation 4 42 43.
• Yu Xiaogang — Tries to recruit Chu Chen as a disciple after deducing he has twin Martial Souls. Chu Chen rejects him, defeats him, and later reclaims the storage belt Yu gave to Tang San 31 33 53.
• Ah Yin — Reborn Blue Silver Emperor whom Chu Chen kills for his first Soul Ring; he destroys the hostile remnant she leaves during absorption 60 65 66 67.
