Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, but his mutated Martial Soul and innate Soul Power of only half a rank left him unable to advance beyond level 29. He left the clan and pursued Soul Master theory in hopes of earning recognition. His work, the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul, failed to gain the standing he wanted, leading him to seek an exceptionally gifted disciple 36.

At Notting City Junior Soul Master Academy, Yu arranged for a gatekeeper to obstruct Chu Chen’s enrollment so that he could intervene and win the boy’s trust. Chu Chen recognized the scheme, rejected Yu’s offer of guidance, and beat him. Under threat, Yu apologized, surrendered his storage belt, and swore not to approach or retaliate against Chu Chen 31 32. Yu repeated the gatekeeper tactic with Tang San later that day. Tang San accepted him as his teacher after Yu identified his Twin Martial Souls 36.

Tang Hao subsequently revealed his identity as the Clear Sky Douluo and entrusted Tang San to Yu. Yu promised to keep Tang San’s Clear Sky Hammer secret and plan his cultivation around Blue Silver Grass for the time being 37. When Chu Chen survived Tang Hao’s attack, Yu’s claim that a powerful friend had killed the boy was exposed. Yu also admitted that he had recovered Chu Chen’s storage Soul Tool from the devastated Back Mountain and given it to Tang San; he ordered Tang San to return it 52 53.

Yu’s hostility toward Chu Chen continued after Chu Chen obtained a deep-purple first Soul Ring. Yu rejected it as a counterexample to his stated 423-year first-ring limit, then watched Tang San challenge Chu Chen. After Tang San lost, Yu condemned Chu Chen’s blows while defending his disciple’s use of a hidden weapon 75 76.

Appearance

Yu is described as an unremarkable-looking man of average height and slightly thin build, apparently in his forties or fifties 31.

Personality

Yu presents himself as an authority on Soul Master cultivation and is eager for others to recognize his expertise. Tang San’s talent becomes central to his ambition to prove his worth through a disciple 36 44. He is protective of Tang San, challenging an unknown powerful visitor on the boy’s behalf and seeking treatment when Tang San is badly injured 36 38 41.

His confidence in his theories can become inflexible. He insists Xiao Wu must have Twin Martial Souls despite her denials, and dismisses Chu Chen’s visible purple first Soul Ring rather than reconsidering his proposed limit 40 75. His dealings with Chu Chen also expose a concern for status: he tries to recruit him through a staged rescue, conceals the extent of his defeat, and later takes credit for Tang Hao’s presumed killing of him 31 36 40 52.
