Background and History

Hongwen’s birth mother died when he was very young. Her former nursemaid, Nanny Feng, remained his principal caregiver after her death. The Xie family raised him with proper manners but also sought a new wife for Xie Jin so Hongwen could have a mother’s care 4 13 22.

Hongwen grows close to his stepmother, Shen Lantang, through play and small acts of affection. When Nanny Feng tells him that Shen’s kindness is false, he becomes uncertain of her feelings and briefly keeps his distance. Shen exposes the nursemaid’s conduct but shields Hongwen from their confrontation; after Feng leaves, he turns to Shen for comfort 18 19 21 22 23 24.

Later, Zheng Wanru—then believed to be his maternal aunt—takes him on repeated outings. Her frequent crying and talk of his late mother frighten and exhaust him. Hongwen confides in Shen, who reassures him that his distress does not make him a bad child and helps him take a break from the outings 103 104. After the Zheng family’s child-switching secret is uncovered, Hongwen learns that Zheng Qingyu is his birth mother’s brother and Wanru is not his blood aunt. He agrees to spend time with Qingyu and their mother as they adjust to their newly discovered relationship 134 135.

Personality

Hongwen’s careful bows and formal speech reflect the Xie family’s disciplined upbringing, though he remains playful and eager for attention from both parents 4 13 27. He enjoys paper folding, animals, and showing Shen his toys 27 31 119.

He is considerate even when overwhelmed: while Zheng Wanru’s crying makes him uncomfortable, he tries to comfort her and worries that wanting to avoid her makes him a bad son 103 104. He also eagerly helps prepare a birthday treat in memory of his great-grandmother, Princess Yong’an 105.
