Background and History

Luo Mingxi found Wen Yan badly injured at the foot of the mountain and brought him to Endless Peak for treatment. He introduced himself as Wen Yan, but Wen Que recognized him as Wen Jinsheng, a runaway Demon Race prince. Though he addressed the Endless Peak disciples by their sect titles, he had no intention of joining them; he wanted to gain Mingxi’s trust 1 2 4.

When Demon Race elders came to retrieve him, Wen Yan claimed he had fled a marriage his family was forcing on him. Wen Que’s account contradicted him: he had requested the childhood betrothal himself, then fallen for someone else. Wen Yan expected Mingxi to defend him against the elders, but she instead demanded an explanation for their accusations against her. He gave none, and the elders took him home. He left resentful that Mingxi had rejected him before he could carry out his planned revenge 3 4 5.

Wen Yan later reappeared near the Heavenly Sun Sect as an injured white fox in He Xueyi’s care. He tried to renew his closeness with Mingxi, who refused him. As she and Wen Que left, he lunged after them and released pink smoke; Wen Que was caught in it and collapsed. Yan Qi subsequently identified signs of the Peach Blossom Curse on her 17 18 19 20.

Appearance

Wen Yan presents himself as a delicate, handsome young man; his fox form is a small snow-white cub 2 17.

• Human form: Soft features, a pale face and watery eyes that help him appear vulnerable 2 3.
• Fox form: Snow-white fur and jade-green eyes; he is bloodied and disheveled when he reappears 17 18.

Personality

Wen Yan uses apparent frailty and affectionate speech to seek Mingxi’s protection. He enjoys her attention, but initially intends to exploit her devotion and take revenge on her. When she withdraws her affection first, he reacts with humiliation and resentment 2 3 5.

On their later meeting, her indifference genuinely shakes him. He asks for their former closeness, yet angrily blames Wen Que for disrupting it 18.

Abilities and Skills

Shapeshifting

• Takes the form of a small white fox while retaining the ability to speak 17 18.

Pink Smoke and Peach Blossom Curse

• Releases a cloud of pink smoke when he lunges toward Mingxi; Wen Que inhales it and loses consciousness 19.
• Yan Qi detects signs of the Peach Blossom Curse on Wen Que afterward. Mingxi later sees a possible future in which Wen Yan uses the curse to turn her affection into obedience; the vision does not establish that this future occurred 20 21 22.

Relationships

• Ming Xi / Luo Mingxi — Rescued and treated him. He sought to use her protection, then struggled to accept her rejection 1 3 5 18.
• Wen Que — Recognized his hidden identity and challenged his account to the Demon Race elders. He blames her for his break with Mingxi 1 4 18.
• He Xueyi — Saved his injured fox form, but realized his attention was fixed on Mingxi 17 19.
• Demon Race elders — Came to the Heavenly Sun Sect to retrieve their prince and took him away after the confrontation 3 5.
