Ning Wen lay down on the wide, soft bed.
The next moment, Xiao Wu pressed against him without a trace of hesitation. Her slender, fair arms wrapped around his right arm and held it tightly against her chest.
Her long, shapely legs curled gently around his waist, intimate and clingy.
Pink-and-white knee socks hugged the graceful lines of her legs, their cuffs fitting comfortably.
A faint blush colored Xiao Wu's delicate face. Her expression was gentle, her long lashes lowered.
She nestled against Ning Wen without a care, warm and soft as a sweet rice cake, showing him all her tenderness.
Who could resist that?
Ning Wen, as it turned out, could.
He couldn't help it. In his eyes, Xiao Wu was still a little girl.
He wasn't into little girls, so he felt nothing.
[Outrageous! Utterly outrageous!]
[You Little Rabbit, you've gone too far! Even a god has his limits!]
[Let go at once, Little Rabbit! Do not defile my pure and spotless divine body!]
[You've ruined my innocence! My dignity is in tatters!!]
[The Heavenly Dao is unjust!! How unjust!!]
[I'm furious!! Never have I suffered such humiliation!!]
[I won't forget today's humiliation!!!]
Ning Wen's mouth twitched.
What was the big deal? Did he have to be so dramatic?
He could let the rest slide, but how had this become an injustice of the Heavenly Dao?
What did the Heavenly Dao have to do with any of this?
He's so loud. Can't he be quiet? I'm trying to sleep!
Watching her fiancé put on a brave face while secretly fuming, helpless to do anything but endure it, put Xiao Wu in a wonderful mood.
Then she remembered who she was. The mischief in her eyes faded, replaced by a faint sadness.
After a long while, Xiao Wu looked up at the young man beside her. Her voice was soft, carrying a nervous hope she couldn't quite hide. "Brother Wen, do you think... Soul Beasts and humans can live together in peace?"
It was a question that had troubled her for a long time.
The sight of her mother at the end, and of countless Soul Masters entering the Great Star Dou Forest to hunt Soul Beasts, kept circling through her mind.
Soul Masters needed Soul Rings to grow stronger, and Soul Rings appeared only when Soul Beasts died. That had been the unchanging rule of this continent since ancient times.
Ning Wen paused in surprise.
He hadn't expected Xiao Wu to ask that all of a sudden.
[Why is this Little Rabbit asking about that now?]
[The strong prey on the weak. That's simply the way of the world.]
[Humans hunt Soul Beasts, and Soul Beasts devour humans.]
[How could Soul Beasts and humans ever truly live in peace?]
[Power is the foundation of any say in this world.]
Xiao Wu's eyes dimmed.
"Well... in theory, it isn't impossible."
Ning Wen's answer was a little vague.
"What would make it possible?" Xiao Wu asked eagerly.
"Soul Masters have to hunt Soul Beasts for Soul Rings. That's the irreconcilable conflict."
After a moment's thought, Ning Wen continued, "If that conflict were resolved, humans and Soul Beasts could, in theory, live together in peace."
He silently added, In theory, anyway.
After all, Legend of the Dragon King had shown that even after human Soul Masters solved the Soul Ring problem, things remained bad for Soul Beasts. If anything, their situation grew worse.
"Say someone invented a way to obtain Soul Rings without killing Soul Beasts."
Seeing Xiao Wu's blank expression, Ning Wen put it in simpler terms.
Xiao Wu's eyes dimmed further.
A way to obtain Soul Rings without killing Soul Beasts?
How could that be possible?
Soul Rings only appeared after Soul Beasts died.
For thousands upon thousands of years, everyone—every Soul Master—had followed that rule to cultivate and grow stronger.
Without killing Soul Beasts, where would Soul Rings come from?
[Ten thousand years from now, the Child of Destiny of that era will create Soul Spirit technology before ascending to the Divine Realm.]
[As the name suggests, it uses a special method to draw a Soul Beast's soul out of its body. The soul then forms a contract with a Soul Master and becomes a Soul Ring.]
[Originally, one Soul Beast could provide only one Soul Ring and one Soul Skill. As a Soul Spirit, it can provide two or three at once.]
[It's a better alternative to a Soul Ring. It does less harm to Soul Beasts while giving Soul Masters the greatest possible boost.]
Ning Wen was taken aback.
In the voice pack's version of events, Tang San had died long ago at the hands of Ning Wen's future self. Naturally, there was no one left to manipulate the fate of Huo Yuhao, the protagonist of the second story and its Child of Destiny.
According to what the voice pack had said earlier, Huo Yuhao had created the God of Death position himself and become the sixth God King of the Divine Realm.
Yet Huo Yuhao had still created Soul Spirit technology.
That meant Golden-Finger Grandpa Electrolux had arrived as expected.
Perhaps this was the path Huo Yuhao, as the Child of Destiny, had been meant to take once free of Tang San's control.
In the original story, though, he had inherited the position of God of Emotions.
The God of Emotions position was powerful, second only to the five God Kings, but it clearly wasn't the best fit for Huo Yuhao.
After all, Huo Yuhao's two most important advantages were Sky Dream Ice Silkworm, a million-year Soul Beast, and a fragment of Undead Scourge Electrolux's divine consciousness.
In terms of attributes, those were mental power and death.
The God of Emotions position was clearly connected to mental power, but what about the legacy of Undead Scourge Electrolux?
And the most precious part of Electrolux's legacy was undoubtedly the knowledge and experience needed to create the Undead Demiplane.
From that perspective, the Douluo Plane Consciousness had probably wanted Huo Yuhao to create his own divine position, perhaps even another Divine Realm. It simply hadn't expected Tang San's sinister schemes to lead him astray.
At the same time, Xiao Wu's head shot up. Her clear eyes brightened, her dark pupils shining.
Ten thousand years might seem distant to humans.
But for Soul Beasts, it wasn't all that long.
She hadn't expected someone in the future to truly invent a way to obtain Soul Rings without killing Soul Beasts.
[But two thousand years after that, Soul Spirits have become widespread, and the number of Soul Beasts in that era still hasn't increased.]
[The reason is simple. Soul Spirits can be passed down for future generations to use, making them even more precious than Soul Bones. But that also stirs human greed and brings unimaginable disaster to Soul Beasts.]
[It's not hard to understand. Soul Masters will stop at nothing for Soul Bones, let alone Soul Spirits, which are even more precious!]
[One of my first wife's subordinates, the supreme ruler of the Great Star Dou Forest, naively believes Soul Spirits will allow humans and Soul Beasts to coexist in peace. As a result, the forest keeps shrinking until it covers less than one percent of its current area.]
[By then, the Great Star Dou Forest has become nothing more than a supply depot for Soul Masters.]
