Background and History

Tang San was an outer disciple of the Tang Sect in his previous life. After secretly learning its inner techniques, he leapt from a cliff. On the Douluo Continent, the Asura God placed his soul in the body of Tang Hao and Ah Yin’s newborn son, who had died or was near death after being caught in Tang Hao’s conflict with Spirit Hall. The Asura God initially intended to cultivate him as an inheritor 6 54.

Tang Hao largely neglected him as a young child. From about age three, Tang San managed household chores and cared for his father; Tang Hao took a greater interest after Tang San awakened the Clear Sky Hammer 54.

At Notting Academy, Tang San became Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and Xiao Wu’s sworn brother. He was distressed when Ning Wen claimed to be Xiao Wu’s fiancé. Yu Xiaogang slapped him during the dispute and threatened to sever their teacher–disciple bond; Tang San apologized and promised not to defy him again 39 40 41 42. Xiao Wu subsequently chose to leave with Ning Wen and ended her sibling bond with Tang San. His grief turned into resentment toward Ning Wen 43 50.

Years later, Tang San arrived alone for Shrek Academy’s entrance test. He was level 29, but had become gloomy and uncomfortable around women following Yu Xiaogang’s treatment of him 79. Seeing Ning Rongrong, Dugu Yan, and Xiao Wu display far higher cultivation—and fourth Soul Rings that contradicted his teacher’s theory—shook his confidence. He ultimately blamed his own effort rather than reject Yu Xiaogang’s teachings 80 81.

By the time of Shrek’s entrance test, Tang San has a gloomy demeanor and a hint of femininity that Ning Wen finds strikingly different from his earlier impression 79.

Tang San places exceptional weight on loyalty to his teacher. Yu Xiaogang’s threat to end their relationship leaves him panicked and quick to accept blame, even after Yu strikes him 40 41. At Shrek, he briefly questions Yu’s theories when faced with contradictory evidence, then suppresses the doubt and faults himself instead 81.

Xiao Wu’s departure leaves him jealous and deeply hurt. He offers her a strained blessing but later directs his resentment at Ning Wen; when she ignores him in Notting City, his hurt hardens into bitterness 43 50.
