Several days passed in a flash.

On a dirt road outside Suotuo City, three people walked along, one in front and two behind.

Ye Lin and Xiao Wu walked side by side, empty-handed and light on their feet,

while Tang San walked twenty or thirty feet ahead, a bulging bundle on his back.

It held the Slab Crystal, spare clothes, a few booklets, and the last of his gold coins.

That was the trouble with not having a storage Soul Tool: you had to carry your luggage.

After they rounded a sparse grove, the gates of Shrek Academy finally came into view.

All three stopped at once.

Xiao Wu blinked and tilted her head, studying it for a long while before she finally spoke.

"This is... the Shrek Academy Grandmaster told us about?"

The sight before them had very little to do with the word academy.

A crooked wooden gate stood there, with a battered plaque hanging above it. The five characters for "Shrek Academy" were neatly written, but the plaque's corners had split.

Beside the gate stood a pitted table. Only three of its four legs were intact; a few broken bricks propped up the fourth.

An elderly man with graying hair sat behind it, bent over a booklet and writing something. A long line of teenage boys and girls waiting to register stretched out behind him.

Ye Lin's gaze rested on the old man for a moment, and he thought,

That must be Li Yusong, a Soul Emperor responsible for the first round of eligibility checks.

"This place is so run-down," Xiao Wu whispered in Ye Lin's ear.

"It's not even half as nice as Nuoding Academy."

"Mm," Ye Lin said softly.

"If it were just ordinarily run-down, I might leave. But when it's this bad, I have to see what's going on."

He glanced over the line.

Twenty or thirty people were already ahead of them, but the line moved quickly. Most applicants were rejected in the first round.

The three joined the line and shuffled forward with the crowd.

The teenagers ahead of them stepped up to display their Martial Souls.

Most had only one Spirit Ring or were too young, and Li Yusong waved them away.

Soon it was their turn.

Li Yusong looked up at the three of them. "Martial Souls and Spirit Rings. One at a time."

Ye Lin stepped forward and spread his arms slightly. Two yellow Spirit Rings rose from beneath his feet.

Xiao Wu activated Martial Soul Possession. Two furry rabbit ears sprang up, accompanied by two yellow rings of light.

Tang San stepped forward. A white Spirit Ring and a yellow one rose beneath his feet, and Blue Silver Grass emerged from his palm.

Li Yusong's gaze paused on their Spirit Rings, then he nodded.

"Your Soul Power Levels are high enough, and your Spirit Ring configurations meet the requirements. Ages?"

He checked their bone ages one by one.

"You all qualify. Next."

He called to the side, "Mubai! Take them to the second round!"

Footsteps sounded nearby, and Dai Mubai emerged from behind the gate.

When he saw the three of them, he faltered slightly. His gaze lingered on Tang San's face for a moment, and the corner of his mouth lifted. "Well, you really came."

That look made Tang San's back tighten,

but his expression remained calm. He even nodded at Dai Mubai. "So you're here."

Dai Mubai did not reply. He turned toward the academy and waved without looking back.

"Follow me. The second round is by the training ground."

The three followed him through the gate and along a rutted dirt path.

They followed Dai Mubai around the edge of the training ground, where an open space came into view.

At the far end stood a crude shelter. Wooden posts held up several pieces of old canvas, barely enough to keep the sun off.

A long table stood beneath it, with the old man in charge of the second round seated behind it.

At the end of the line stood a girl in a white dress. Her long hair fell over her shoulders, and her features were delicate and beautiful.

She stood quietly, utterly out of place amid the shabby surroundings.

Dai Mubai brought them to the shelter.

"Line up here for the second test. I have to get back to the front."

With that, he turned and left.

Tang San's gaze rested on the girl in white for a moment.

Ning Rongrong.

The little princess of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect.

Tang San glanced at Ning Rongrong's pretty, innocent-looking face. His expression did not change, but old grievances were already resurfacing in his mind.

When this girl first came to Shrek in my previous life, her temper was unbearable.

She acted like a spoiled young lady, threw a fit at the slightest thing, and looked down on everyone. How was she any different from some stray child?

No manners at all. If I didn't know she was from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect, I'd think she was some stray child from who knows where.

Ning Rongrong had been standing there quietly, but her expression froze the instant she heard that.

Her brows drew together. She looked up and scanned the area.

Which blind bastard dared call me ill-mannered?

And a stray child?

I'll have Sword Grandpa and Bone Grandpa kill your whole family!

She did not lash out immediately. Pretending she had heard nothing, she searched discreetly for whoever had said it.

Ye Lin and the other two joined the line beneath the shelter.

Two or three applicants ahead of them were still having their Soul Power tested, but each one trudged back the way they had come afterward, dejected.

Ning Rongrong stood at the end of the line, still smiling,

but the hand hidden in her sleeve had quietly clenched into a fist.

She had not even finished stewing over being called a stray child

when another thought reached her.

Ning Rongrong may have an awful temper, and she's no good person either. She's always threatening to have Sword Douluo and Bone Douluo get revenge for her, like a baby who hasn't been weaned.

But the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect is still useful. They're rich enough to rival a nation. If I want my Tang Sect to grow, I'll need to use their money.

I still need to stay on good terms with Ning Rongrong. Especially after the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect is destroyed, I'll be the only one they can rely on. Then I can take over everything the sect has built.

Ning Rongrong's smile stiffened.

She clenched her jaw.

Use us? Destroyed? Take over everything?

Who is this?

How can someone be so vicious?

She wanted to summon Sword Grandpa and Bone Grandpa on the spot and have them kill his whole family.

A third thought followed close behind.

When she and Oscar become gods someday, their Divine Soul Fusion Skill will give them one chance to resurrect someone. I need to keep that lifesaving ability in reserve.

If it hadn't been for her and Oscar's Divine Soul Fusion Skill in my previous life, I really would have died that time.

Ning Rongrong froze.

A previous life? Becoming gods? Resurrection?

Those words together sent her head spinning.

Could the person thinking this have been reborn?

And before he was reborn, we were close?

I even helped resurrect him after he died?

Ning Rongrong cursed inwardly.

Someone this rotten to the core?

He's lucky if I don't kill his whole family. Help resurrect him? In his dreams.
