"Are you sure?"
Faced with Huo Yuhao's question, Wang Dong'er boldly declared, "I can even give you a head start of a few laps."
In the end, Huo Yuhao did not accept Wang Dong'er's offer of a handicap.
The two began competing with each other among the runners of Freshman Class One.
The other students in the class watched as these two latecomers gradually worked their way forward through the ranks.
From trailing at the very back, they gradually reached the middle of the pack, then became the leaders.
"Wow, those two are amazing."
At the tail end of the class, Xiao Xiao struggled to keep up. She wiped the sweat from her face with her sleeve.
She watched Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong'er at the very front with some envy. Although she had twin martial souls, both of hers—the Three-Life Soul-Suppressing Cauldron and the Nine-Phoenix Ceremonial Flute—were support-type martial souls.
As a result, her physical fitness was worse than that of an ordinary Soul Master. Simply managing to keep up was already an achievement.
The rivalry between Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong'er intensified, and their pace gradually quickened.
This left the runners behind them groaning nonstop.
An effeminate-looking boy in the group could not help saying in a pinched voice, "Oh my god, girl, where did these two absolute menaces come from? How are they this fit?"
The student beside him chimed in, "Right? They both look pretty handsome. Why do they run like they're throwing their lives away?"
The two at the front turned a deaf ear to all of this. Even after leading for forty or fifty laps, neither felt tired, apart from Wang Dong'er being slightly out of breath.
At some point, Zhou Yi had appeared in a shaded spot beside the field.
Watching the two at the head of the group, she could not help looking pleased. How could she fail to see that they were locking horns?
Still, she was happy to see it happen. After all, her philosophy of education held that only competition could spur greater progress.
The sun was already high when, with fifteen minutes left before class ended, Freshman Class One finally completed Zhou Yi's prescribed hundred laps under the pair's lead.
Overwhelmed by the exertion, some of the students collapsed onto the ground to rest.
Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong'er had set a blistering pace, but these students who had earned admission to Shrek Academy all had pride of their own. Unwilling to fall too far behind, they had mustered every ounce of strength, straining with all the might they had possessed since suckling at their mothers' breasts to keep up with the leaders.
Having pushed themselves too hard, the students who had collapsed now felt their legs and feet aching and swollen. Just then, a green light enveloped them. Those on the ground felt their exhaustion rapidly ease, while the soreness in their legs and feet gradually disappeared.
Turning their heads, they saw that a middle-aged teacher had appeared beside Zhou Yi at some point, holding a green sapling. Seven spirit rings floated around the teacher—two yellow, two purple, and three black.
The green light enveloping them emanated from the sapling in the teacher's hand.
After healing the collapsed students, the teacher nodded to Zhou Yi and left.
Zhou Yi, however, did not look at the students on the ground. Instead, she watched the two figures still running in the distance.
By now, some sharp-eyed students had noticed the two figures still on the field.
"Huh? Why are those two still running?"
"No idea. Maybe..."
The student's voice suddenly dropped, and she nervously glanced back toward Zhou Yi. Seeing that Zhou Yi was not paying attention to them, she bent down and whispered to the classmate beside her:
"Maybe that twisted old spinster punished them!"
"Twisted old spinster?"
"Yeah. I heard from the senior students that it's her nickname. Apparently, expelling students is her favorite thing to do in class."
The student beside her was about to ask something else when Zhou Yi's furious shout rang out from behind them.
"What are you talking about? Have you had enough rest?"
The students who had been chattering a moment earlier were frightened into silence, like cicadas in the cold.
Beneath the shade of the trees, Zhou Yi glanced at her wristwatch and shouted to the two on the distant field:
"Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong'er, you have fifteen minutes to finish twenty laps!"
On the field, pink-and-blue wings unfurled behind Wang Dong'er. Holding her head high, she called to Huo Yuhao, whose expression remained unchanged beside her, "Hey, Huo Yuhao, did you hear that? Only fifteen minutes left. Want this young master to take you flying? Admit defeat, and I'll fly you through these twenty laps."
The field in front of Shrek's teaching building measured a full five hundred meters around. The remaining twenty laps added up to ten kilometers, a distance almost impossible to run in ten minutes.
"No need!"
"Good. Since you admit defeat, this young master will..."
Halfway through, Wang Dong'er suddenly realized what Huo Yuhao had said. Somewhat anxiously, she said:
"Now isn't the time to be stubborn. If you don't finish, that old hag will definitely expel you."
"Who told you I couldn't fly?"
The two horns on Huo Yuhao's head glimmered faintly, and two clouds condensed directly beneath his feet.
Wang Dong'er stared, dumbstruck, as Huo Yuhao rode the clouds up into the air.
Only after a long moment did Wang Dong'er recover, beating her wings to chase after Huo Yuhao.
The others outside the field were too far away to make out the clouds beneath Huo Yuhao's feet.
What they saw was Huo Yuhao merely pushing off with his toes before his entire body soared into the air.
"Am I seeing things? I actually saw someone fly without wings."
"Holy crap, people of Douluo can fly."
The freshmen could not see how Huo Yuhao had taken flight, but as a Soul Emperor, Zhou Yi certainly saw everything clearly.
"Flying just by stepping on clouds? What martial soul is that? Is this the Four-Not-Like mentioned on his registration form?"
The two circled the field through the air. Wang Dong'er beat her wings furiously, whipping up winds that even blew several railings on the field askew.
But even beating her wings with all her might, Wang Dong'er still could not catch Huo Yuhao, who calmly rode his clouds ahead of her. Instead, this stretch of flight had left her drenched in sweat.
"Wang Dong'er, Huo Yuhao, the finish line is here! Head toward me!"
Up ahead, Zhou Yi stood at the finish line and shouted to them.
Seeing the finish just ahead, Wang Dong'er squeezed out her very last shred of strength. She beat her wings faster and flew desperately toward the finish line where Zhou Yi stood.
Faced with Wang Dong'er's all-out final effort, Huo Yuhao simply poured more soul power into the auspicious clouds beneath his feet.
His speed abruptly surged. In an instant, he overtook Wang Dong'er beside him and continued across the finish line where Zhou Yi stood.
Thud!
The moment Wang Dong'er crossed the finish line, she could no longer sustain her wings, and they dissipated on the spot. She lay sprawled on the ground, too busy gulping down air to care about her obsession with cleanliness.
Huo Yuhao stood before her without a flushed face or a racing heart. Apart from being slightly out of breath, he had not even broken a sweat.
Standing in front of Wang Dong'er, Huo Yuhao looked down at her.
"Well? Convinced?"
"Con... convinced."
Still gasping for breath, Wang Dong'er raised a thumb.
"I give in. You're the real man!"
