Background and history

Deidara grew up in Iwagakure and became Ōnoki's personal disciple. Their disagreement over art—Ōnoki valued enduring resolve, while Deidara pursued the brilliance of an instant—preceded Deidara's departure and membership in Akatsuki 99. After the Canopy Screen shows his possible future as Tsuchikage, Ōnoki orders a squad to persuade the missing-nin to return rather than kill him 102.

In the broadcast future, Deidara turns away from Akatsuki and helps foil Nine Nether's plot during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Six months after the war, Ōnoki appoints him Fourth Tsuchikage 99. Deidara's inauguration immediately tests that trust: he rejects the traditional Will of Stone, declares art his guiding principle, and demonstrates it with harmless explosive-clay fireworks. He proposes to Kurotsuchi beneath the display; they later marry and have two children, Haimā and Klee 100 101 201 215.

As Tsuchikage, he develops Iwagakure into a prosperous City of Art, but remains resistant to paperwork, often leaving administration to Kurotsuchi 106 108. His leadership becomes more guarded when the village faces Kumogakure's diplomatic pressure, Ōnoki's dangerous clone experiment, and attacks by engineered monsters 119 130 151. He organizes civilian evacuation ahead of a threatened Five Kage Summit and sends Iwagakure's young people to Konoha for safety when the Jashinist Cult targets them 163 175.

In the present-day storyline, after watching these events on the Canopy Screen, Deidara requests permission to leave Akatsuki. Pain agrees, and Deidara returns to Kurotsuchi and Ōnoki in Iwagakure 226 227.

Appearance

Deidara has long blond hair and blue eyes. His future Tsuchikage attire retains his artistic motifs rather than following the traditional design without alteration 99 115.

  • His Fourth Tsuchikage robes feature dark-gold exploding-dragon and Akatsuki-cloud patterns 99.
  • A single-lens magnifying eyepiece covers his left eye in his signature look 105 107.
  • Mouths in his palm and chest are shown in connection with his clay art and last-resort attack 115 131.

Personality

Deidara is proud, provocative, and quick to defend his belief that an explosion's fleeting beauty is true art. He reacts fiercely when Sasori dismisses his work or claims to have influenced it, yet can sincerely admire Sasori's craftsmanship 106 107 154. He initially recoils from the idea of becoming Tsuchikage, a role at odds with his freedom as an artist 103 104.

His future leadership does not erase that impulsiveness: he skips paperwork to see Sasori and clashes openly with Sasuke 108 201. It does, however, give him responsibilities he takes seriously. After a monster attack, he orders an investigation instead of retaliating against Kumogakure without proof; when a wider attack threatens Iwagakure, he puts its people ahead of the city he built 151 163.

Abilities and skills

Explosive-clay creations

Deidara shapes chakra-infused clay into mobile creations and detonates them for attacks of different scales 100 151.

  • C1–C3: Spiders, birds, dragons, and other bombs support flight and aerial bombardment. A modified C3 attack attaches bombs to targets and the surrounding floor 151 205.
  • C4 Karura: Releases microscopic clay bombs that kill a creature from within after it inhales them 152.
  • Limits: A later monster filters and expels C4's bombs; another disrupts their chakra structure with infrasound 153 206.

Large-scale clay control

His future self can convert terrain—and, aboard an alien ship, metal—into explosive clay for battlefield control, constructs, and defense 127 204.

  • C7: Sea of Explosions replenishes a vast clay mass quickly enough to exhaust an opposing Dust Release barrier 127 128.
  • A Clay Giant can fight at close range, detonate its own trapped fist, form a restraining clay swamp, or raise a barrier against particle beams; some beams still penetrate the barrier 204 205 207.

Nuclear and concentrated attacks

Sasori's research helps Deidara extend his art beyond conventional clay explosions 130 132.

  • C10: Annihilation Rebirth produces a nuclear-scale blast. It fails to kill the regenerating Land of Earth Person and, in a later fight, leaves Deidara heavily depleted 130 131 153.
  • A highly compressed clay sphere focuses its energy into a penetrating ray, cracking an armored monster's crystal core so the strike team can destroy it 207.
  • His final, untested Ultimate Art uses a substance sealed in his chest. The attack destroys an alien ship and Deidara himself 215 217.

Equipment and items

  • Clay Bomb pouch — supplies clay for shaped, chakra-infused creations 100.
  • Clay Giant Bird — flying creation used for travel, combat, and evacuation 130 151.
  • Akatsuki cloak — kept after leaving the organization and worn again for the mission against the aliens 201 202 226.
  • Duel Disk and Explosive Art Deck — used for the card-battle system Deidara promoted with Sasori 150 175.
  • Clay engagement ring — a nonexplosive dragon-shaped ring he makes for Kurotsuchi 101.

Relationships

  • Ōnoki — former master and predecessor as Tsuchikage. Their arguments over art and leadership persist, but Ōnoki chooses Deidara as his successor and comes to trust him with Iwagakure 99 128 203.
  • Kurotsuchi — wife in the broadcast future and an administrator and diplomat who balances his impulsiveness. In the present, she welcomes him home from Akatsuki 101 119 227.
  • Haimā and Klee — his son and daughter in the broadcast future. He arranges their safety in Konoha before the alien mission 201 215.
  • Sasori — former Akatsuki partner, artistic rival, and close friend. They develop techniques together; Sasori chooses to remain beside him for his final attack and later preserves a recording of it 107 215 222.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — wartime ally whose commitment to Iwagakure earns Deidara's trust. Naruto promises to protect Deidara's family and village after his death in the broadcast future 163 175 222.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — powerful ally with whom Deidara repeatedly clashes, though they join the same strike team against the aliens 137 200 201.
