Ch. 261Offending the Jashinist Cult
Plot and events
- Conan solves the librarian’s murder by pointing out three clues: blood on the killer’s cuff, Red Clay on his shoes from the flower bed, and a key on his ring that could have opened the desk drawer before its lock was deliberately broken.
- The killer tries to escape, but Kabuto trips him. Cornered, the man reveals he belongs to the Jashinist Cult, then dies by biting a concealed poison capsule.
- Kumogakure’s Military Police investigate and release Conan and Kabuto after confirming their roles as witnesses. Kabuto rushes off, realizing he is late for a party with Yor.
- Conan returns to the Odd Jobs Shop and tells Professor Agasa what happened. Agasa says the cult’s leader, Hidan, reportedly will not target children, so Kabuto—the adult who tripped the killer—is more likely to be in danger.
- Yor waits alone at a crossroads, assumes her husband has stood her up, and heads to her coworker’s party, planning to claim they argued. At the party, Ran explains that Shinichi also cannot attend, and coworkers immediately ask Yor where her husband is.
Character developments and interactions
- Conan demonstrates sharp deductive skill, but his success brings him anxiety and guilt when he realizes he may have exposed Kabuto to the cult’s revenge.
- Kabuto helps Conan at the crucial moment, then hurries away without explaining, leaving Yor waiting.
- Agasa reassures Conan, though his advice shifts the danger onto Kabuto.
- Yor’s excitement turns to disappointment and self-doubt as she interprets Kabuto’s absence as rejection. Ran and the coworkers’ questions make both women’s absences more conspicuous.
Significant themes
- Deduction and consequence: Solving the murder exposes Conan and Kabuto to the threat of a fanatical cult.
- Duty versus personal life: Kabuto’s involvement in the case disrupts his plans with Yor.
- Loneliness and insecurity: Yor’s interpretation of the missed meeting reflects her fear that she cannot have an ordinary marriage.
- Dramatic irony: Conan worries about Kabuto’s danger while Yor assumes Kabuto simply chose not to come.
