Analysis in the Batcave: An Enemy Unlike Any Before!

The Batcave.

The damp air smelled of stone and cold machinery.

Deep in the cave, a great waterfall roared like a sigh that would never end.

Bruce Wayne stepped out of the Batmobile, Gotham's rain still clinging to his black armor, along with the faint scent of blood.

He pulled off his cowl, revealing a face dark as a storm cloud.

"Hot cocoa and a towel, Master Wayne?"

Alfred Pennyworth appeared at just the right moment with a silver tray. His voice was as calm as ever, edged with just the right amount of British wit.

"Or was your 'party' with your new friend not quite the enjoyable evening you'd hoped for?"

Bruce did not answer. He walked straight to the massive Batcomputer in the center of the cave.

He plugged a data connector on his armor's wrist into the computer.

"Pull up every combat recording. Target: Link."

His voice was colder than the stone around him.

"As you wish."

At the computer's response, a holographic projection opened above the console.

The abandoned Central Station. A cold, rainy night. Two figures colliding fiercely amid light and shadow.

Bruce replayed the fight again and again.

Every detail, every movement, slowed to a fraction of its original speed.

Alfred set a steaming cup of coffee beside him and stood quietly nearby. He said nothing more.

He knew his young master was in trouble.

Trouble unlike any he had faced before.

"Computer, analyze the target's fighting style," Bruce ordered.

Streams of data raced across the screen.

Every one of Link's movements was broken down, modeled, and compared against more than 127 established fighting styles in the database.

But the analysis came back as a wall of red gibberish.

[Warning: Target's fighting style cannot be identified.] [Preliminary assessment: A blend of street fighting, military close-quarters combat, Krav Maga, Systema... Error. Unable to construct a valid model.] [Seventy percent of the target's movements violate human biomechanics. The logic is incoherent, but... effective.]

Bruce stared at the elusive figure in the hologram.

His opponent moved like a drunken dancer, without any apparent discipline, yet somehow dodged Bruce's deadliest attacks at the last possible instant.

More unsettling still was the look in the man's eyes.

It was a knowing, almost mocking look.

As though he knew what Bruce would do next.

"Compare his movements in the second half of the fight against my database," Bruce said grimly.

This time, the computer's findings seemed to freeze the very air in the Batcave.

[Comparison complete.] [During the final three minutes of combat, the target used seventeen techniques that closely match entries in your personal database.] [These include: a variant of the Keysi Fighting Method, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submissions, and... the mechanics of the Gabin Boxing strikes you developed yourself.] [Similarity: 93%.]

Bruce shot to his feet, disbelief filling his eyes.

Impossible!

That was absolutely impossible!

His fighting style was unique, forged from the finest techniques in the world and refined to suit his own body.

Many of its subtle movements and ways of generating force were known to no one but him!

And yet that man...

He was learning during the fight!

No, not learning. Copying!

Like a sponge, he had absorbed the combat skills Bruce had spent his life mastering in just a few minutes, then turned those very skills against him!

Alfred saw the rare shock on Bruce's face and sighed softly.

"He seems to know you inside and out, Master Wayne."

The butler stepped forward and looked at the man on the screen, vanishing into the shadows.

"He knew how to draw you out. He knew where your car would stop. He even... seemed to know how you fight."

"And we know nothing about him."

Nothing at all.

Those words struck Bruce like a hammer.

He sank back into his chair, his mind racing to connect every clue.

The flawlessly executed escape from Arkham.

The surgical precision of the attack on Penguin's financial empire.

And tonight, the bizarre "check-in" trap laid specifically for him.

Intelligence, Psychology, Hacking Technology, knowledge of traps, and that inconceivable ability to mimic fighting techniques...

All those seemingly unrelated abilities belonged to one man.

Bruce called up the only file photo of Link. Taken at Arkham, it showed a face wearing a gentle smile.

Beside it was the last frame the cameras had captured before Link disappeared into the dark at the end of the fight.

He had turned toward the camera and flashed a defiant smile identical to the one in the photo.

Bruce Wayne's hands slowly curled into fists.

At last, he understood what kind of enemy he faced.

He was not a madman like Joker, a narcissist like Riddler, or an ambitious schemer like Penguin.

He was a ghost.

A predator unlike any before, born to counter Batman and hunt him down.
