Resurrection had three essential requirements: "the subject's willingness," "the corpse's integrity, freshness, and health," and "the casting requirements."

Divine resurrection spells could only bring back someone who wanted to return. The corpse's integrity, freshness, and health were all manageable concerns. The casting requirements were actually the biggest headache.

There were many resurrection spells, and almost all consumed precious materials. Different spell levels allowed different lengths of time since death and degrees of bodily damage. The higher the spell's level, the fewer restrictions it imposed.

The materials required were correspondingly more expensive. Clerics who knew resurrection spells were already exceedingly rare, and the materials cost anywhere from hundreds to tens of thousands of gold coins. A legendary cleric would probably need several weeks, or even longer, to prepare a 9th-level divine resurrection spell.

Games simplified all of that enormously. It looked as though sleeping at an inn refreshed every arcane and divine spell.

Reality was nothing like that. In practice, preparing a high-level spell was a considerable ordeal for spellcasters.
