PS: There should be another update today, but it will be rather late.
After they had spoken frankly, Alusair's attitude toward Aaron changed even further. She motioned for him to follow her, her wine-red eyes occasionally glancing his way with approval, tenderness, and a hint of encouragement. "Aaron, I once told you to learn from Lady Alustriel, not Sammaster. Do you remember?"
"Yes. That is why my loyalty to Your Highness is unwavering, just like Lady Alustriel's." Aaron seized the opportunity to declare his devotion.
What have I been working so hard for? the Child of Chaos thought. The Princess Regent did not know the whole story, but she had probably decided by now that Aaron had feelings for her and had risked his life for her sake.
Fine. If that's what Alusair thinks, all the better.
She was a resolute, decisive, self-centered autocrat who trusted only her own judgment. As long as she started from the premise that "this man likes me," she would have an explanation for everything Aaron did.
Besides, Aaron truly did have designs on her. If he wanted to steal the kingdom, there was no better way than to conquer the Princess Regent's heart and body.
"Heh. I know there is a little something else mixed into that loyalty of yours." Alusair wore an ambiguous smile. The Princess Regent nodded slightly, finally revealing a glimpse of her private side. "Sometimes, handling everything alone really does wear me out. Charlotte is innocent and carefree, and she has no interest in affairs of state. So, do you understand why I appointed you my Blackstaff Ceremonial Officer?"
"Yes. All the great affairs of the Purple Dragon realm rest upon Your Highness alone. Everyone knows you have worked from dawn until late at night ever since assuming the regency."
