The Emperor had used the Four Gods, then seized an opportunity to escape their control, but he had still failed in the end.
Be'lakor had used the Four Gods. The Original Daemon Prince had even found a way to free himself from their control, yet Be'lakor had failed too.
Things might look as though they were going splendidly for him, but he was still fundamentally borrowing the Four Gods' power. They could not get at him for the moment, but they could certainly choke off his progress!
When Aaron had tried to advance from Elite to Master, the Four Gods had already put him in a vicious stranglehold. It was easy to imagine that, should he attempt to reach Legendary in the future, they would tighten their grip even further and impose all sorts of harsh conditions.

His plan could not change. He had to attempt to ascend to godhood in the Realms as soon as possible. Though the Time of Troubles had passed and Aaron had missed the ideal window for ascension, that did not mean he had no chance at all.
