After their audience with Mama Selûne at the Stormshore Tabernacle, Aaron brought Eleanor back to the Elf Song Tavern. Reinsdorf had already booked rooms there for Aaron, and Charlotte had checked them in.
The Elf Song Tavern had been operating in Baldur's Gate for many years. Passed down through a half-elf family, it was renowned as the most popular place for ordinary citizens of the Lower City to unwind. From time to time, the sorrowful song of an ethereal female elf would echo through the tavern, giving the establishment its name.
Although the singing was not loud enough to interrupt conversation, most patrons would stop talking when it began and resume once it ended.
Many regulars came specifically to hear the song. Those who understood Elvish could make out its meaning: a lament for an unnamed lover lost at sea.
No one knew when this spirit had taken up residence in the tavern, just as no one knew when she would sing again.
"Varo wrote in his adventure notes that no one dared visit a tavern in Baldur's Gate unarmed." Holding Eleanor's little hand, Aaron recalled Varo's Travels in Baldur's Gate. "The streets and taverns are actually the most dangerous places in Baldur's Gate. Alcohol, money, conflict-murders happen here every day."
Before he had finished speaking, Aaron and Eleanor noticed a brawl in an alley beside the street. A local laborer from the Lower City was grappling with an outsider who was clearly dressed as a refugee. They cursed in accents neither could understand, driving vicious punches into each other's stomachs and heads.
Not a single person tried to break it up. The onlookers all cheered loudly, and someone was openly taking bets with an earthenware
