Following the Rainbow Bridge Aaron had created, the Chaos Dwarfs were the first to storm Menzoberranzan. They charged headlong, ignoring the many Drow warriors still holding the walls and rushing straight into the city to attack the Drow families' Family Fortresses first. The Infernal Guard killed every Drow they saw with their wide-barreled firelocks and lava battleaxes.
Roughly seven thousand Chaos Dwarfs entered Menzoberranzan in the first wave. Their assault achieved little, but it terrified the Drow houses, already distrustful and divided. The matrons hurriedly ordered their respective troops back to their main strongholds for a final defense.
That retreat brought about the complete collapse of the defenses on the walls.
The Eilistraee Colossus continued to ravage the Drow defenders atop the walls, while Cormyr's army marched across the Rainbow Bridge into Menzoberranzan.
