Background / History
Konoha career and defection
Orochimaru was a gifted Konoha shinobi and Hiruzen Sarutobi’s personal disciple. Alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, he fought Hanzō of the Salamander, who spared the exhausted trio and bestowed the title Sannin upon them 56 86.
He rose into Konoha’s high command and became a leading candidate for Fourth Hokage. The discovery of his secret human experiments forced him to defect, turning him from a respected village figure into an S-rank missing-nin. During his time as Hiruzen’s student, he had access to the Scroll of Seals 86 125.
Orochimaru subsequently belonged to Akatsuki. Itachi Uchiha defeated him instantly with genjutsu, intensifying his obsession with the Sharingan. By the Chunin Exams, he wanted to determine whether Sasuke’s body would make a suitable vessel for reincarnation 93.
Chunin Exams and the invasion plot
As Otogakure’s leader, Orochimaru planned to destabilize the Shinobi World so his village could profit. He arranged an attack on Konoha with Fourth Kazekage Rasa, assigning the Sand forces to occupy Konoha’s defenders while he confronted Hiruzen 59 123.
When Rasa questioned the plan, Orochimaru moved to replace him rather than share command. Kimimaro killed Rasa’s guards, and the Sound Four enclosed Rasa, Kimimaro, and Orochimaru within the Four Violet Flames Formation. Orochimaru intended to impersonate the Kazekage and direct the Sand shinobi himself 59.
In the Forest of Death, Naruto immediately recognized Orochimaru despite his female disguise. Naruto briefly impersonated Hiruzen’s voice and manner, convincing him that he might have entered a trap. Angered by the humiliation, Orochimaru attacked, only to be overwhelmed by Naruto’s ninjutsu and Wind Release–infused Rasengan 91 92.
Naruto then forced him into an agreement: leave Sasuke alone, delay Hiruzen’s death, and publicly expose the Third Hokage’s past. In exchange, Naruto offered protection, research equipment, rare materials, and access to Konoha’s research files. A Flying Thunder God mark provided an additional means of keeping Orochimaru under pressure 93 94.
Hiruzen’s exposure and execution
During the invasion, Orochimaru’s Kazekage impersonation allowed him to command Sand shinobi who believed they were following Rasa. He isolated Hiruzen on the arena roof and eventually removed his disguise, revealing his identity and his intention to expose and kill his former teacher 117 123.
Rather than fight Hiruzen directly, Orochimaru summoned Hashirama and Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation. These enhanced reincarnations were tied to Naruto’s version of the technique, not merely Orochimaru’s original capabilities 124 125 128.
Orochimaru’s public account attacked Hiruzen’s reputation through several major allegations:
- Sakumo Hatake’s death: He accused Hiruzen of instigating the smear campaign that drove Sakumo to suicide 128 129.
- The Nine-Tails attack: He alleged that Hiruzen and the Anbu withdrew, leaving Minato to confront the beast alone, and connected Minato’s newborn child to Kushina Uzumaki 129.
- The Hyūga affair: He described Hizashi’s death as a concession to Kumogakure’s threat of war 131.
- The Uchiha massacre: He recounted Danzō’s theft of Shisui’s eye and the village leadership’s involvement in Itachi’s destruction of the clan 132 133.
- Konoha’s declining strength: He linked the loss of powerful shinobi and the disappearance of the Senju and Uchiha clans to Hiruzen’s leadership 131 133.
His presentation was selective: he omitted his own culpability in the exposure of his human experiments, and the narration acknowledges that he did not fully understand every event he described 129 131.
With the crowd demanding Hiruzen’s death or trial, Orochimaru privately identified Naruto as the mastermind. He then destroyed Hiruzen’s statue on Hokage Rock and stabbed his former teacher through the heart with the Kusanagi Sword 134.
Service under Naruto
Naruto’s suggestion that he could rule indefinitely awakened Orochimaru’s hope of obtaining genuine immortality. He abandoned his halfhearted attitude and agreed to return after Konoha’s reconstruction with everything he owned 137.
His cooperation remained self-interested: he still coveted Naruto’s body as a possible reincarnation vessel. Naruto eliminated that risk by using Kotoamatsukami on him. To verify its effect, Naruto ordered him to kill himself; Orochimaru immediately attempted to stab his neck, and Naruto stopped him 181 182.
Naruto installed him in the expanded former Root base, supplied a Mangekyō Sharingan for study, and placed his followers under Naruto’s authority. Orochimaru thereafter became a central researcher in Naruto’s biotechnology and military-development projects 182 321 422.
Appearance
Orochimaru’s appearance changes with his host body; recurring snake-like traits and habits make him recognizable even when his face changes 123 321.
- Eyes: Yellow eyes with slit pupils 397.
- Tongue: An unusually long tongue, frequently used to lick his lips or circle his face 59 123 137.
- Voice: Hoarse 397.
- Clothing: Wears a kimono during his meeting with Rasa 59.
- Female vessels: Uses a female appearance during the Forest of Death encounter and is revealed in a woman’s body after removing the Kazekage disguise 91 123.
- Youthful body: Later explains that cloning allows him to choose his body’s apparent age 321.
Personality
Orochimaru is calculating, ruthless, and unwilling to share control when another leader might obstruct his plans. His betrayal of Rasa is explicitly motivated by the need to make the Sand forces follow his orders without prioritizing their own village’s preservation 59.
Scientific discovery and immortality are his strongest incentives. Naruto secures his cooperation first through force and promised resources, then through the possibility of eternal life. Rare experimental subjects excite him: when given Hidan, he immediately considers dissection, vitality extraction, pulverization, and destructive testing 93 137 226.
His arrogance gives way to caution when confronted by superior power. He initially dismisses Naruto’s confidence, but negotiates after suffering serious injuries. Later, Naruto’s growing strength makes him increasingly formal and deferential 92 93 321 388.
Kotoamatsukami changes his allegiance without apparently erasing his personality or independent interests. He remains fascinated by research, amused by Sasuke’s troubles, and competitive about Naruto’s recognition of other scientists 182 397 401.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Turns his arm into numerous venomous snakes that attack the target 92.
- Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases hundreds of attacking snakes; Naruto destroys them with Majestic Destroyer Flame 92.
- Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes: Expels tens of thousands of snakes from his mouth to engulf an opponent. Naruto escapes the assault and counterattacks 92.
- Snake messenger: Uses a small snake to summon his subordinates to the laboratory 182.
Body Replacement and Reincarnation
- Snake-like substitution: Survives a devastating Wind Release–infused Rasengan by shedding his damaged body 92 93.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Can abandon his current body for another vessel. Before Naruto controls him, he considers this a way to escape the Flying Thunder God mark placed on his body 108.
- Clone-based reincarnation: Later transfers into clones of himself without contaminating his soul; sufficient replacement clones theoretically allow indefinite survival 321.
- Cursed Seals: Uses seals connected to his power, including Tayuya’s. Naruto removes hers with Senjutsu Chakra 182.
- Limit: Naruto distinguishes repeated body replacement from true immortality in which both body and soul endure permanently 321.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Revives Hashirama and Tobirama and directs them against Hiruzen 124 125.
- Controls the reincarnated bodies’ actions, including Tobirama’s involuntary attacks 125.
- The enhanced summons retain their living strength and possess limitless chakra; this performance is associated with Naruto’s improved technique 124 126 128.
Infiltration and Political Manipulation
- Infiltrates the Chunin Exams in a disguise that escapes Hiruzen and the Anbu’s notice, though Naruto recognizes him immediately 91.
- Impersonates the Fourth Kazekage to exploit the Sand shinobi’s loyalty 117 123.
- Uses public revelations and selective historical framing to turn the audience against Hiruzen 128 129 133.
Biotechnology
- Develops cloning, genetic modification, transplantation, and immortality methods 321 330.
- Transplants Hashirama’s cells into Sasuke, contributing to the evolution of both eyes into Rinnegan 371.
- Studies subjects with unusual biological properties, including Hidan’s immortality and Shin’s rejection-free transplant compatibility 226 397.
- Could not cure Kimimaro’s Bloodline Disease; Naruto later healed it 273.
