Background / History

Garp became a legendary Marine through physical combat and Haki rather than a Devil Fruit. He pursued Gol D. Roger and his entire crew across the seas with his fists, developing a relationship with Roger as both a lifelong rival and a dear friend 24 27 58.

God Valley

At God Valley, Garp allied with Roger’s pirates to stop Rocks’s attempt to seize control of the world and protect the Celestial Dragons and slaves there. Roger vouched for Garp’s honor when Rayleigh questioned whether they could trust him. Garp confronted Rocks directly while Roger’s crew approached from behind in a planned pincer attack 127 128.

The battle awakened Dongze, who had been trapped in ice beneath the sea. Garp ordered the Marines into the air before the spreading cold froze the battlefield, then joined the leading pirates in using Conqueror’s Haki to resist the newcomer’s overwhelming pressure 128 129.

When Dongze overwhelmed Rocks, Garp accepted Ochoku’s proposal to unite the rival factions against him. During the combined assault, Garp unleashed a full-power Divine Realm Armament Haki strike capable of smashing space 132 133.

Later Marine Service

Before Aokiji became an Admiral, Garp handled some affairs in the Four Blues; Harry, stationed in Loguetown, served under him. In later years, Garp stepped back from frontline service to train promising Marines at headquarters 17 27.

Garp also cared for Roger’s son, Portgas D. Ace, in the East Blue. Ace called him “grandpa,” sharing that relationship with Luffy 58 128.

Appearance

Garp is an elderly, towering, broad-shouldered man 25.

  • Dog-head hat: Described as his favorite hat, worn when visiting the Loguetown branch 43.
  • Marine coat and blue shirt: At Marineford, he removes his coat and rolls up his shirt sleeves before entering the fighting 175.

Personality

Garp’s carefree behavior includes picking his nose during serious conversations, falling asleep standing up, and forgetting what he was doing immediately afterward. His appetite is similarly excessive: he once consumed a month’s provisions from the G-4 branch and later attempted to surpass his record of eating ten thousand donuts in one sitting 24 43.

His apparent simplicity conceals considerable political judgment. Aokiji recognizes that Garp is not a mindless brawler; he usually charges ahead because the situations he faces do not require deeper thought. Garp understands the political purpose behind Ohara’s destruction and recognizes Dongze’s restraint and pragmatism despite his violent reputation 26 43.

Garp wants peace on the seas but initially accepts compromised Marine justice as preferable to abandoning order altogether. His contempt for the Celestial Dragons, concern for ordinary Marines, and personal loyalties eventually drive him to reject the World Government’s plans and support Marine independence 26 27 159 177.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Combat

Garp has trained his body to the pinnacle and practices his punches on mountains. His strength and combat instincts initially exceed Dongze’s, even when Dongze’s techniques make their battle appear evenly matched 25 26 27.

  • Seizes momentary hesitation to launch rapid, decisive combinations 26.
  • Can disable a junior Admiral-level fighter with one punch at full burst 73.
  • Projects compressed-air attacks over long distances; one full-power punch pierces ten thousand meters of seawater 27 84.
  • Has never eaten a Devil Fruit, leaving his combat strength independent of fruit abilities 27 159.

Armament Haki

Garp possesses Divine Realm Armament Haki, demonstrated at God Valley and explicitly identified during his later reunion with Dongze. The realm exceeds ordinary mastery and cannot be reached through hard training alone; Dongze attributes it to talent and luck as well 112 133 172.

  • Ryuo-coated strikes: His punches interrupt Dongze’s high-speed movement and force him to rely on his defensive Sword Intent 26.
  • Space-shattering force: His fists reproduce effects comparable to Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit without using a Devil Fruit 133 146.
  • Full-body defense: Withstands Roger’s Divine Departure before counterattacking 172.
  • Limit: Using an ability at its absolute limit carries a risk of death. Garp therefore generally holds back despite his mastery 100.

Dongze estimates Garp’s Armament Haki at over 950,000 proficiency during their first battle. This is Dongze’s assessment, not a displayed status panel belonging to Garp 27.

Observation Haki

Garp uses Observation Haki to track opponents, avoid attacks, and identify the best moment to counter 26 167 176.

  • Detects Dongze near Orange Town by spreading his perception across hundreds of kilometers 112.
  • Recognizes the presence Dongze leaves behind on Fish-Man Island and notices how rapidly he has improved 84.
  • Dongze estimates his Observation Haki at approximately 900,000 proficiency during their first battle 27.

Conqueror’s Haki

Garp possesses Conqueror’s Haki and can coat his fists with it. His kingly will is described as fierce and unyielding, despite the common assumption that powerful Marines rarely possess this Haki 27 167.

  • Breaks free of the pressure from Dongze’s Hundred-Pace Flying Sword 26.
  • Combines Conqueror’s coating with advanced Armament Haki in his strongest punches 27 176.
  • Counters Roger’s battlefield-wide sword pressure at the instant Roger’s mental strength falters 167.

Movement and Instruction

  • Geppo and Shave: Uses both to travel through the air and rush ahead of his warship 112.
  • Physical-combat training: Promises to teach Momousagi once she naturally reaches Admiral level. His martial-combat instruction requires the student not to have consumed a Devil Fruit 73.
  • Talent assessment: Tsuru consults both Garp and Zephyr about Momousagi’s potential advancement 72.

Named Techniques

Technique Description and documented use
Fist Bone: Mountain-Breaking Strike Produces a vast fist-shaped attack that scatters clouds and shakes an island. Later used to counter Roger, with the resulting shockwave knocking Marco from the air 26 172.
Fist Bone: Star-Splitting Combines advanced Armament Haki with Conqueror’s coating in a ranged fist blast. Its clash with Dongze’s Crossing the Eight Directions destroys and sinks an island 27.
Ultimate: Star-Splitting Full-power Divine Realm Armament Haki strike that smashes space during the God Valley assault 133.
Fist of Love A sudden punch delivered to Dongze during their post-battle discussion of dreams 27.
Fist Bone: Annihilation An all-out punch combining Armament Haki and Conqueror’s coating, launched against Shanks when he arrives to stop the Marineford fighting 176.

Equipment / Items

  • Dog-Head Warship — His distinctive Marine vessel, recognizable to Dongze through Observation Haki 24.
  • Den Den Mushi — Used to contact Aokiji, Dongze, and the World Government. His unavailability by telephone frustrates Sengoku during Dongze’s attack on the Holy Land 28 100 114.
  • Dongze’s wooden sword — Requests a small sword for Luffy; Luffy later confirms that his grandfather gave him a genuine example of Dongze’s legendary wooden swords 112 128.

Relationships

  • Dongze — Initially a recruitment target and opponent, later a respected young fighter whom Garp recommends for the Shichibukai. Garp warns him about the World Government and backs his potential without expecting obedience 24 27 43 112.
  • Monkey D. Luffy — Grandson. Garp subjects him to forceful “education” and insists that he will become a Marine, while also giving him one of Dongze’s wooden swords 17 24 113 128.
  • Monkey D. Dragon — Son and leader of the Revolutionary Army. Garp publicly calls him an ignorant bastard but is privately pleased when Dongze praises him 28.
  • Portgas D. Ace — Roger’s son, raised under Garp’s care and treated as a grandson. Ace’s execution places Garp between Marine duty and personal attachment 58 128 162 163.
  • Gol D. Roger — Lifelong rival, friend, and temporary ally at God Valley. Their familiarity allows Roger to anticipate Garp’s decisions during Ace’s rescue 58 127 172.
  • Sengoku — Senior Marine colleague whose patience Garp repeatedly tests. They later coordinate in battle and jointly assert the Marines’ independence from the World Government 43 91 176 177.
  • Aokiji / Kuzan — Longtime follower who understands Garp’s perceptiveness and considers himself far weaker than him. They jointly support Dongze’s Shichibukai appointment 40 43.
  • Nico Robin — Ohara survivor whom Garp recognizes through her resemblance to Nico Olvia. He expresses regret over Ohara, encourages Robin to judge the world for herself, and warns Dongze about the danger surrounding her 25 26 28.
  • Bogard — Adjutant who accompanies Garp and reminds him of his plans after his bouts of forgetfulness 24 28.
  • Tsuru — Veteran colleague who understands that Garp’s strength, rather than his hero title, protects him from government retaliation. She also seeks his promised training for Momousagi 43 73.
  • Whitebeard / Edward Newgate — Powerful rival whose clashes with Garp cause widespread destruction beneath Fish-Man Island and at Marineford 84 171 176.
  • The Five Elders — Authorities Garp openly mocks and selectively obeys. Their efforts to use the Marines against Dongze lead to his direct defiance 91 159 177.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Pursuit and Recruitment of Dongze

  • Harry recommends Dongze to Garp after the Pirate Hunter repeatedly brings him military achievements without acting arrogantly 17.
  • Garp follows Dongze toward Jaya, intending to recruit him and train him alongside Luffy. Dongze immediately flees upon detecting the Dog-Head Warship 24.
  • After a prolonged chase, Robin unwittingly reunites them by bringing the battered Garp back as a supposedly stranded old man 25.
  • Dongze refuses to join the Marines. Their fight exposes weaknesses in his physique, instincts, and Haki, while forcing Garp to take his unusual sword techniques seriously 26 27.
  • After their final clash sinks the island, Garp praises Dongze, discusses his ambition, and warns him about Robin’s enemies before contacting Aokiji 27 28.

Shichibukai Recommendation and Growing Political Tension

  • Garp supports Aokiji’s recommendation of Dongze for the Shichibukai, arguing that his judgment and strength make him a suitable candidate 43.
  • Without Dongze’s knowledge, he adds “Swordsmanship Challenges the World, Who Else But Me!” to the newspaper announcement, provoking potential challengers 43 44.
  • A clash with Whitebeard beneath Fish-Man Island triggers undersea volcanoes and a tsunami that nearly submerges Sabaody 84.
  • The Five Elders demand explanations when Dongze’s strength and association with Robin become politically dangerous. Garp deflects responsibility and urges Aokiji to help 91 98.
  • He later warns Dongze about the risks of using powers at their absolute limit and acknowledges that he once fought the Holy Land’s rulers, retreating before an unseen, terrifying power 100 112.

Marineford War

  • Garp rejects the Government’s plan to turn Marineford into a battlefield against Dongze. He demands Ace’s release and proposes evacuating senior Marines rather than sacrificing them 159.
  • Nevertheless, he takes his place beside Sengoku and Ace, privately hoping Ace survives while fulfilling his Marine responsibilities 162 163.
  • He counters Roger’s Hundred-Pace Flying Sword, destroys Whitebeard’s attack on the Execution Platform, and knocks Marco away during a rescue attempt 167 171 172.
  • Once Imu confronts Dongze, Garp allows Roger to rescue Ace, recognizing that the greater clash will determine everyone’s fate 173.
  • After Imu’s death, he and Sengoku fight to establish the Marines’ own authority. Garp battles Roger and Whitebeard and attacks Shanks when he attempts to halt the conflict 175 176.
  • Garp ultimately urges Sengoku to end the war rather than accept further losses, then fully supports his refusal to submit to the Five Elders 177.

After the War and Finale

  • Garp’s backing keeps Sengoku secure as Fleet Admiral while the Marines increasingly follow their own judgment rather than government orders 182.
  • When Dongze returns to destroy the Holy Land, Garp attends the leadership meeting but offers no recommendation to intervene. He also suspects Dongze is responsible for healing Issho’s eyes 187.

Notable Quotes

“Someone has to uphold justice. Even if that justice is flawed, it can still bring the world a little hope!” 26

“It's only Conqueror's Haki. How could I not have it?” 167

“Sengoku, this battle should end.” 177

Trivia

  • Dongze’s proficiency system uses “Garps” as a unit of combat strength, rating him at 1.5 Garps, 1.9 Garps, approximately 1.99 Garps under suppression, and later six Garps. These are Dongze’s ratings, not Garp’s own advancement levels 58 73 98 124.
  • Garp’s permanently low rank irritates famous pirates: being chased and beaten by a “mere Vice Admiral” damages their prestige, even though they consider him potentially stronger than Fleet Admiral Kong 132.
  • Tsuru identifies his overwhelming strength as the real reason the World Government tolerates him despite Dragon’s rebellion; his Marine Hero title is secondary 73.
