Background / History

Ohara and life as a fugitive

Robin earned her archaeology certificate at seven. Ohara’s scholars studied the Void Century, prompting the World Government to send the Marines and destroy the island through a Buster Call. Her mother, family, and fellow scholars died, leaving Robin determined to finish their research 13 34 144.

Aokiji spared her and secretly helped her survive afterward, honoring Jaguar D. Saul and watching what she would become. Robin did not learn the extent of his protection until his confrontation with Dongze. During her fugitive years, people repeatedly sheltered her to exploit her reputation or collect her bounty 13 39.

Joining Dongze

Dongze first encountered Robin while destroying pirate crews in the East Blue. He repeatedly spared her while claiming he could not defeat her, actually fearing that involvement with her would attract Aokiji. Robin interpreted the recurring destruction of her refuges as deliberate harassment 12 13.

During their seventh encounter, she confronted him with her Devil Fruit powers and was accidentally knocked unconscious by his Conqueror’s Haki. Dongze brought her aboard rather than leave her exposed to danger. Upon waking, she refused to leave and offered her cooking, navigation, and archaeological skills. His admission that he could not guarantee her protection moved her more than a confident promise would have 13.

Dongze concealed her identity with dyed hair, contact lenses, a changed hairstyle, and men’s clothing. She accepted the name Xiao Yi, despite her reluctance to set aside her real name, and agreed not to display her Devil Fruit powers publicly without permission 13.

Nami and the first signs of resistance

Robin cared for Nami after Dongze pressured the girl into killing two merchants who threatened her family. She recognized his manipulation and challenged him over it. Hearing about Arlong’s control of Cocoyasi Village, she identified likely Marine corruption and urged Nami not to depend on Arlong’s promise 16 17.

She supplied the money needed to complete Nami’s hundred-million-Beli payment and warned that Arlong might betray the agreement. Robin and Dongze later arrived near the village as Nami’s attempt to purchase its freedom collapsed 18.

Poneglyph travels with Dongze

In Alabasta’s royal tomb, Robin translated the Poneglyph concerning Pluton. Although tempted to withhold dangerous information, she disclosed the entire inscription to Dongze, including the weapon’s location. This established honesty as a condition of their partnership 21.

On Sky Island, she read the Golden Bell’s Poneglyph and Roger’s message, reaffirming her commitment to Ohara’s unfinished work. She opposed Dongze when she believed he intended to destroy the historical relic for sword material; he instead communicated with the stone and obtained Long River 34 35.

Dongze refused to abandon her during Garp’s pursuit and later fought Aokiji rather than let her surrender. After their battle, Aokiji departed with a farewell to Robin. Garp and Aokiji subsequently discussed securing Dongze a Shichibukai position to help him keep her aboard 25 39 42 43.

Their relationship became increasingly intimate. Robin’s uncertainty about her place aboard the ship culminated in her secretly drugging their wine, an action the narration links to her fear of being left behind after Enel’s departure 59 60.

At Fish-Man Island, she identified Shirahoshi as the current Poseidon and fought the attackers who found them after Dan’s betrayal. Later, she shared a secluded life with Dongze on Hada Island, helping run their smithy under the name Xiao Yi 76 77 84.

Their subsequent research included Big Mom’s red and black Poneglyphs, Zou’s account of a battle under Joy Boy, and Wano’s account of the final ancient battle and Zunesha’s mistake. Her translations also repeatedly unlocked abilities in Dongze’s proficiency system 104 108 118.

Revolutionary work and the Straw Hats

Following Dongze’s instructions, Robin secretly contacted the Revolutionary Army and conducted revolutionary activities across the Four Blues. She reappeared in Alabasta as Miss All Sunday, denied that Crocodile belonged to Dongze’s faction, and offered Vivi help against the uprising 125 126.

Robin saved Luffy and overwhelmingly defeated Crocodile before joining the Straw Hats. Her knowledge of the four Road Poneglyphs helped persuade Luffy, while defeating Zoro in a duel established her fighting credentials. Nami recognized her from their earlier meeting and welcomed her privately 128 134.

She initially avoided using Dongze’s Sword Case to solve every problem, wanting the crew to develop its own strength. Aokiji’s provocation forced her to reveal her full arsenal and protect the others while they withdrew. Afterward, she shared her identity and Ohara’s history, then began teaching Haki and physical conditioning 142 143 144.

Dongze’s return and the final conflicts

In Water 7, Iceburg gave Robin a box containing one of Dongze’s Little Wooden Swords. Through it, she sensed that Dongze had returned after three years. She also admitted deliberately directing Crocodile toward the Pluton blueprints, arguing that people’s choices mattered more than ancient weapons 149.

On Thriller Bark, she fought Kuma and then faced World Government agents seeking both her and the Sword Case. Luffy’s freezing attack temporarily rescued her from a stalemate, while Kuina’s arrival ended the remaining threat. Robin needed time to recover from the mental cost of her domain 150 152 153 154.

At Laugh Tale, she read the final Poneglyph with Dongze, Shi Xuan, and Kuina. Its appeal to cherish companions and family affected her more deeply than its historical revelations; she credited meeting Dongze with giving her a life she might otherwise have lost 160.

In Dressrosa, Robin enforced Dongze’s agreement with Viola, threatening the Riku family if it reneged. At the finale, she fought Yamato using seven Sword Intents. Their battle left Wano’s remaining land destroyed, and a ship from Soust transported the survivors away 180 187.

Appearance

Robin is described on introduction as a fair-skinned, beautiful woman in her early twenties, with dark eyes and long legs 12.

  • Height: Dongze stands roughly a head taller when she joins him 13.
  • Family resemblance: Garp says that, with different hair and eye colors, she would closely resemble Nico Olvia 25.
  • Xiao Yi disguise: Dyed hair, contact lenses, a new hairstyle, and men’s clothing 13.
  • Public wanted photograph: Her revised poster depicts her with pink hair 99.
  • Later eye description: Her eyes are described as dark green during her confrontation with Viola 180.
  • Recognizable equipment: Carries Dongze’s long Sword Case on her back while sailing with the Straw Hats 142.

Personality

Robin’s intelligence is both scholarly and practical. She reads people through years of fugitive experience, identifies the likely connection between Arlong and Captain Nezumi, and recognizes Dongze’s hidden plans for Nami. Her humor becomes increasingly mischievous as she grows comfortable with him, often defeating him in verbal exchanges 16 17 29.

Her early restraint reflects a history of exploitation. Small acts of consideration—such as Dongze noticing her interest in perfume—have an outsized effect on her. Once she feels secure, she openly teases him and takes responsibility for their shared money, ship, and daily routine 13 20 21.

Robin is protective of vulnerable companions and historical records. She comforts Nami, tends Dongze’s injuries, refuses to let a Poneglyph be destroyed, and risks fighting Aokiji alone to let the Straw Hats escape 17 34 38 142.

Her growing confidence also has a ruthless political side. She criticizes hereditary privilege, works toward overturning the existing order, and treats the Riku family’s agreement with Dongze as binding under threat of annihilation. Her compassion for companions does not prevent coercion against those she considers obstacles 125 131 180.

Abilities & Skills

Archaeology and Poneglyph Translation

Robin reads the Ancient Script and pursues the history Ohara was forbidden to study 13 34.

  • Translates information concerning Pluton, Poseidon, Joy Boy, and the route indicated by the Road Poneglyphs 21 34 76 104 108.
  • Explains that four red Poneglyphs are essential to reaching the final destination 134.
  • Reads Roger’s inscription on Sky Island and the final Poneglyph at Laugh Tale 139 160.
  • Her translations repeatedly trigger new Sword Intents or system developments for Dongze; those unlocks belong to his progression, not hers 21 104 108.

Flower-Flower Fruit

Robin sprouts and extends limbs, using the ability for shipboard tasks and coordinated attacks 29 59 77.

  • Chain Finger Pistols: Sprouted arms deliver repeated Armament-coated Finger Pistol strikes 77.
  • Mil Fleur Finger Pistols: Produces a vast field of palms for a much larger barrage 77.
  • Can keep extending her arms to increase the barrage’s effectiveness 77.
  • Seawater weakens her; after a battle’s shock wave throws her into the shallows, she must struggle ashore 27.
  • Large barrages consume her Haki reserves and leave her vulnerable to continued attacks 77.

Haki and Six Powers

Dongze teaches Robin Haki and selected Six Powers techniques 20 43.

  • Armament Haki: Coats her hands and sprouted limbs, reinforcing her Finger Pistol attacks 61 77.
  • Observation Haki: Uses it to survey events elsewhere on Thriller Bark 150.
  • Finger Pistol: Integrates the technique with her Devil Fruit rather than relying on a single pair of hands 77.
  • Shave and Geppo: Returns to the Straw Hats’ ship using both movement techniques 143.
  • Her Haki and close-combat ability remain weaknesses against an elite Admiral such as Aokiji 142.

Sword Intent and Flying Swords

Robin inherits access to Dongze’s Peerless Sword Case and learns multiple forms of Sword Intent 142.

  • Defeats Crocodile and Zoro with swordsmanship, including the ability to cut steel 134.
  • Uses Moonlit Flowers at Dawn for an enormous Sword Aura attack 142.
  • Uses Hidden Light, Sitting in Forgetfulness to nullify Aokiji’s attack and later to recover gradually 142 154.
  • Demonstrates Shuihan and Devouring Reincarnation while fighting Kuma, producing severe cold and erosion-like effects 151.
  • Uses Hundred-Pace Flying Sword, creating an ink-wash domain containing an Azure Dragon formed from Sword Intent 152.
  • Wields seven forms of Sword Intent against Yamato by the finale 187.

Sword Intent Domain and Forbidden Law Realm

Robin can suppress Devil Fruit abilities through her domain while continuing to use Sword Intent 142 150.

  • Stops Aokiji’s Ice Age and deprives him of his Devil Fruit advantage 142.
  • Disrupts Moria’s control of Oars and the zombies, removes Perona’s ghosts, and also disables Luffy’s powers 150 151.
  • Sword Intent within her body resists Kuma’s Paw-Paw Fruit; its concentration near her brow allows him to remove her fatigue despite that resistance 150.
  • A World Government fighter states that activating five of the case’s Flying Swords can open the Forbidden Law Realm 153.
  • The domain places an enormous burden on her mental strength. Without Dongze’s weapons, she estimates she could sustain it for only about ten minutes 150.
  • Exhaustion can reduce her control of the Flying Swords to maintaining a temporary stalemate 153.

Robin’s practical skills secure her initial place aboard Dongze’s ship and later support the Straw Hats 13 144.

  • Navigates, cooks, manages shipboard work, and raises concerns about supplies and money 20 29.
  • Her cooking improves during her travels with Dongze 59.
  • Teaches the Straw Hats Haki and physical conditioning 144.
  • Lends Zoro a Flying Sword to study its Sword Intent; she distinguishes lending the weapons from having authority to give them away 144.
