| Iron Head Skill and Mantra unlocked | 1 | Discovers that his ability displays skill proficiency. An injury also awakens the foundation of Observation Haki, called Mantra. |
| Basic thrust perfected | 2 | Reaches 1,000/1,000 by adjusting his breathing, angle, strength and state of mind rather than repeating the move without improvement. |
| Thirteen basic sword forms completed | 4 | Finishing the final form changes the system’s Basic Swordsmanship label and reveals a locked Swordsmanship category. |
| Named sword techniques registered | 4 | Unlocks proficiency entries for Hundred-Pace Flying Sword, Sword-Draw Technique and Taiji Sword; he initially lacks the skill to use them effectively. |
| Sword-Draw Technique: 8,500/10,000 | 5 6 | Rapid gains in combat let him wound a Black Ape Zoan user. When progress stalls, he switches to Hundred-Pace Flying Sword to win. |
| Conqueror’s Haki awakened | 7 | His grief when he believes Kuina has died triggers an uncontrolled outburst across Shimotsuki Village and the island. |
| Sword-Forging: 10,000/10,000 | 8 | Unlocks the second-tier skill with Kozaburo’s manual and masters it through intensive forging. |
| Armament Haki unlocked | 10 | Koshiro’s Ryuo-infused slash fills the 1,000-point unlock requirement during their spar; Dongze’s new entry begins at 1/1,000,000. |
| Erosion Sword Intent awakened | 21 22 | A desert sword strike awakens Sword Intent. Dongze subsequently identifies Erosion Sword Intent as an offensive power he wants to develop. |
| Basic Meditation acquired | 24 | Receives the skill after defeating Crocodile; it strengthens his mind and partly improves his Sword Intent. |
| Non-Contention Sword Intent awakened | 27 | Emerges passively from Hidden Light, Sitting in Forgetfulness during his fight with Garp. It is defensive and consumes little energy while contained. |
| Voice of All Things unlocked | 29 | Fuses Mantra with Observation Haki after both Armament and Observation Haki stall at 500,000 proficiency. |
| Ryuo-level Armament Haki attained | 30 | Masters Iron-Sand Palm, fuses it with Armament Haki and demonstrates internal destruction on a rock. |
| Erosion Sword Intent projected beyond his weapon | 33 | At 400,000 proficiency, it can attack independently of the sword; Dongze uses it against Enel. |
| Thunderclap Sword Intent activated | 33 42 | Becomes available for comprehension after the Enel fight and is listed as active at 200,000 proficiency later. |
| Cold River / Shuihan Sword Intent activated | 40 41 42 | Unlocks during the Aokiji battle. Its strikes freeze Aokiji despite his Ice-Ice Fruit; Shuihan reaches 500,000 proficiency by the fight’s end. |
| Basic Meditation mastered; Intermediate Meditation unlocked | 44 45 | Mastery nearly doubles Dongze’s mental power. He activates the 100,000-point Intermediate Meditation skill at 1,000 proficiency. |
| Six Sword Intents mastered | 48 | Dongze tells Rayleigh he has mastered six Intents and begins their duel with an Erosion-imbued flying sword. |
Background and History
Koshiro rescued Dongze when bandits raided Shimotsuki Village and took him into Isshin Dojo. After two years of training, Dongze still struggled against Kuina and the newly arrived Zoro. His outlook changed when he discovered an ability that made his progress visible, allowing him to identify unproductive practice and refine individual movements 1 2 4.
Once ordinary training ceased to advance his sword techniques, Dongze borrowed Wado Ichimonji and attacked the bandits’ hideout. He killed its leaders, including a Black Ape Zoan user, and returned the sword to Koshiro. He then studied the sword-forging books left by Koshiro’s father, Shimotsuki Kozaburo, to make a weapon suited to his own style 4 5 6.
At fifteen, Dongze left the dojo by boat to seek stronger opponents and pursue the limits of swordsmanship. He chose not to join the Marines or an unfamiliar pirate crew. His campaign against violent pirates made him known across the East Blue as the Crime Buster; pirates who sailed without slaughtering civilians were generally left alone 10 11 12.
Dongze later traveled with Nico Robin in search of Poneglyphs. His battles with Crocodile, Garp, Enel and Aokiji became opportunities to develop Sword Intent and Haki. After fighting Aokiji to a draw, he was appointed a Shichibukai, bringing him far more public attention than he wanted 21 24 27 33 42 44.
Appearance
Dongze is described early on as small-built and, later, as having a youthful face. His gaze grows notably sharp during his intensive sword training 1 2 7.
- Age at departure: Fifteen 10.
- Usual weapon: A three-foot, double-edged sword of his own making, rather than the sabers customary among many swordsmen he encounters 9 28.
Personality
Dongze is ambitious but measures ambition against survival. He refuses Dragon’s early invitation to the Revolutionary Army because he considers himself unready, flees rather than gamble on fighting Garp before understanding his intentions, and moves dangerous duels away from populated areas when possible. He tells Garp that discovering the limits of swordsmanship and martial arts matters more to him than a title 7 25 28 48.
He can be teasing with Kuina and Robin, but treats threats to them seriously. His grief over Kuina’s apparent death awakens his Conqueror’s Haki; later, he accepts the danger of protecting Robin from pursuit tied to Ohara. Against bandits and pirates who prey on civilians, he is calculating and often merciless 5 7 11 28.
Abilities and Skills
Proficiency Vision
Dongze sees skill names and numerical progress through a system-like panel. It lets him detect bottlenecks, register unfamiliar techniques and, later, fuse compatible skills 1 4 29.
- Repetition alone does not guarantee progress; he must make effective adjustments or meet a skill’s conditions 1 2.
- Strong opponents can accelerate combat-skill growth, while weak ones may grant little or none 8 11.
- The system blocks at least one attempted shortcut to raising Erosion Sword Intent 22.
Swordsmanship and Sword Intent
Dongze’s basic technique relies on precision: in his rematch with Zoro, he repeatedly meets the weak points of Zoro’s bamboo swords and disarms him. His later techniques include Sword-Draw Technique, Hundred-Pace Flying Sword, Crossing the Eight Directions and Hidden Light, Sitting in Forgetfulness 3 4 12 26.
- Erosion Sword Intent can leave his weapon, erode an attack and interfere with a Logia user’s elemental transformation 33 40.
- Non-Contention Sword Intent is defensive and uses comparatively little energy while he keeps its power contained 27.
- Cold River / Shuihan Sword Intent can freeze even Aokiji’s ice-elemental body, though repeated Sword Intent attacks strain Dongze’s mind 41 42.
Haki and Movement
Dongze uses all three types of Haki. His Observation Haki develops from Mantra into the Voice of All Things; his Armament Haki later reaches Ryuo-level internal destruction. His Conqueror’s Haki can incapacitate crowds and, when first awakened, spread across an island 7 29 30 46.
- Uses Shave and Geppo for rapid movement and travel through the air 10 24.
- Advanced Haki does not make him invulnerable: he studies its defensive limits while enduring Enel’s lightning 36.
Sword-Forging and Meditation
Dongze masters sword-forging using Kozaburo’s notes and makes blades that Koshiro sells through a nearby shop. He also practices meditation to strengthen the mental reserves needed for Sword Intent 8 24.
- Forged his own double-edged sword, Forgotten Dust, after months of preparation 9 28.
- Mastering Basic Meditation nearly doubles his mental power and opens Intermediate Meditation 44 45.
Equipment, Weapons and Items
- Forgotten Dust — Dongze’s self-forged, double-edged sword, designed for attack; he describes it to Garp as a weapon suited to his Sword Intent 9 28.
- Long River — a black-and-red sword received from a Poneglyph. It carries Erosion Sword Intent and responds to Dongze’s commands in flight 35.
- Folding sword case — a case Dongze makes with twelve marked slots for his planned flying-sword collection 30.
- Wado Ichimonji — Koshiro’s sword, borrowed for the bandit-hideout assault and returned afterward 4 6.
Relationships
- Koshiro — rescues Dongze, mentors him at Isshin Dojo, grants him access to Kozaburo’s forging resources and tests him before he sets sail 4 6 10.
- Kuina — close friend and sparring rival. Dongze encourages her ambition to become the strongest, while she worries about his departure 2 7 9.
- Roronoa Zoro — defeats Dongze early on, then loses decisively to him; their rivalry continues to motivate Zoro 1 3 10.
- Nico Robin — traveling companion whom Dongze protects despite the danger associated with Ohara. Their partnership develops through shared travel, teasing and trust 13 21 28 35.
- Enel — defeated by Dongze and compelled to serve under him; later attacks Dongze with lightning as part of his Sword Intent training 33 34 36.
- Monkey D. Dragon — invites Dongze to join the Revolutionary Army. Dongze declines for the time being but trades strategic advice for sword-forging ore 7 8.
- Garp — tries to recruit Dongze into the Marines. Their destructive duel ends in mutual respect, though Dongze maintains his independent path 26 27 28.
- Aokiji — fights Dongze to a draw while assessing his ability to protect Robin, then leaves her in his care 40 41 42.
- Silvers Rayleigh — seeks Dongze out at Sabaody and agrees to test him in a duel away from bystanders 46 48.
