Background / History
Konoha and the Eye of the Moon Plan
Madara and Hashirama Senju once joined forces to end the Warring States Period and establish Konoha. Their partnership helped usher in the era of the five great ninja villages. When Madara later left Konoha, the Uchiha Clan remained behind rather than follow him 265 275.
Their rivalry culminated in the battle at the Valley of the End, where Hashirama defeated him. Madara survived by using Izanagi to deceive Konoha and remained alive until the Third Great Ninja War. By the time Rono enters the Ninja World, Madara is dead, while Obito operates under his name 220 253 291.
Madara believed Black Zetsu was the embodiment of his own will and therefore incapable of betraying him. In reality, Zetsu was Kaguya Otsutsuki’s creation and had manipulated the Eye of the Moon Plan to secure her revival 220 253 299.
Reanimation and the First Defeat
Rono’s interference forces Obito and Black Zetsu to accelerate Madara’s return. Obito agrees reluctantly, still hoping to betray Madara and become the Ten-Tails jinchūriki himself. Black Zetsu arranges cooperation with Orochimaru, with Obito supplying Sharingan as payment 229 253.
After being reanimated, Madara’s faction seizes the captured One- through Eight-Tails. Madara defeats Pain and takes the Rinnegan from Nagato before approaching Konoha to obtain the Nine-Tails 248 252.
Initially judging Rono by his chakra reserves, Madara dismisses him as a Peak Kage-level opponent. Rono survives his Fire Release, destroys his body repeatedly, and breaks both his Fourth Form and Perfect Susanoo. Madara acknowledges Rono’s strength but maintains that full resurrection will reverse the outcome 249 250 251 252.
Madara, Obito, and Zetsu escape through a prepared Reverse Summoning Technique. They regroup beneath the former Kannabi Bridge and seek Orochimaru’s help to restore Madara completely 253.
Resurrection and Alliance with Hashirama
Orochimaru successfully returns Madara to life. Learning that Hashirama and the jinchūriki are fighting Rono—and that the Nine-Tails’ host is present—Madara heads for the battlefield 270 271.
Madara now considers Rono, rather than Hashirama, his only meaningful opponent. His enhanced body still loses their opening physical exchange, prompting him to deploy Limbo, a Rinnegan-enhanced Perfect Susanoo, and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path clad in Susanoo armor 272 273 274.
After Rono destroys this armored form, Madara uses Izanagi to restore himself and accepts Hashirama’s proposal to cooperate. Together they create a Susanoo-armored Thousand-Handed Buddha and attack continuously for ten minutes. Rono’s subsequent giant-form attacks overwhelm their defenses despite Madara’s meteors, chakra reinforcement, and Susanoo-equipped clones 275 276 278 279.
Madara fakes his death with Izanagi and retreats into the Kamui Dimension with Obito and Black Zetsu. Rono recognizes the deception but allows it, hoping Madara will become the Ten-Tails jinchūriki and provide stronger abilities to acquire. The apparent defeat of both Madara and Hashirama helps drive all Five Great Shinobi Villages to submit to Rono 281 282.
Ten-Tails Transformation
While Rono fights Toneri Otsutsuki, Madara captures the Nine-Tails and feeds it to the Demonic Statue, completing the Ten-Tails. He merges with the beast and challenges Rono again rather than immediately carrying out the Eye of the Moon Plan 291.
Rono acquires Madara’s Six Paths techniques and counters them with stronger versions. Increasingly obsessed with proving himself, Madara abandons his immediate focus on Infinite Tsukuyomi and combines a Six Paths Susanoo with the complete Ten-Tails 291 292.
When Rono destroys the armor and wounds the Ten-Tails, Madara reveals its God Tree form. He uses its worldwide chakra and natural-energy drain as a new source of power, but remains unable to match Rono. Rono repeatedly destroys his regenerating body until the system acquires Madara’s immortal-body ability 294 295.
Isshiki’s Alliance and Black Zetsu’s Betrayal
Jigen’s criticism provokes Madara into attacking him. After Jigen—identified by Rono as Isshiki Otsutsuki—counters his techniques and pierces him with chakra-draining rods, Madara escapes through a Limbo substitution and accepts a temporary alliance against Rono 296.
During their joint attack, Madara deduces that Rono can copy ocular techniques after seeing him use Obito’s Kamui. Rono confirms the suspicion by reproducing Isshiki’s Daikokuten 298.
Rono then exploits their distraction, overwhelms Madara in close combat, pierces his heart, and applies a seal that prevents him from using chakra to escape. He deliberately slows the sealing process to give Black Zetsu an opportunity to act 299.
Black Zetsu possesses the weakened Madara and reveals that he was never Madara’s will, but Kaguya’s servant. Using Madara’s body, Zetsu activates Infinite Tsukuyomi; Madara begins transforming as Kaguya’s chakra rises 299.
Appearance
Madara returns through Reanimation wearing an outfit associated with the Warring States Period. His Six Paths transformation later replaces this battlefield appearance with sage robes and accompanying Truth-Seeking Balls 248 291.
- Clothing: Black, close-fitting combat attire beneath red battle armor 248.
- Hair: Wild, spiked hair 248.
- Eyes: Crimson Sharingan on his initial arrival; reclaimed Rinnegan after full resurrection 248 272.
- Later feature: A third eye opens on his forehead during the God Tree battle 294.
Personality
Madara is openly contemptuous of weaker fighters, treating the Konoha shinobi as insignificant and initially dismissing Rono as a nobody. His arrogance does not prevent him from respecting strength: once Rono overwhelms him, Madara becomes excited by the prospect of a serious battle and recalls his confrontation with Hashirama 249.
He enjoys combat enough to begin his resurrected rematch with hand-to-hand fighting despite having newly available Rinnegan techniques. Repeated humiliation turns that enthusiasm into fixation; even after becoming the Ten-Tails jinchūriki, he prioritizes defeating Rono over Infinite Tsukuyomi 272 292.
Madara can nevertheless act pragmatically. He retreats from an unwinnable encounter, restores himself with Izanagi, and accepts temporary alliances with Hashirama and Isshiki. His judgment is much weaker where Black Zetsu is concerned: his belief that Zetsu embodies his own will leaves him completely unprepared for betrayal 252 253 275 296 299.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Rinnegan
- Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan: Supplies the eye power needed for Perfect Susanoo 251.
- Rinnegan: Reclaimed from Nagato and used at full strength after Madara’s resurrection 248 272.
- Tailed Beast control: His Rinnegan’s eye power restrains the Nine-Tails, leaving it unable to resist capture 291.
- Chibaku Tensei: Used against Jigen, who destroys it with his concealed black rods 296.
- Ocular observation: Uses the Rinnegan to look through the dust after his joint assault with Hashirama 276.
Limbo: Border Jail
- Creates four shadows in another dimension, each possessing Madara’s strength and capable of using Susanoo 272.
- Ordinary opponents without Rinnegan or Six Paths power cannot detect them. Two shadows defeat the seven manifested Tailed Beasts from Shukaku through Chōmei almost instantly 272 273.
- Uses shadows defensively to intercept Rono’s attacks and substitutes one to escape Isshiki’s chakra-draining rods 292 296 299.
- Coordinates his own Light Fang with four shadows to attack from multiple dimensions 295.
- Limit against Rono: Rono’s ocular power and unusual sensory abilities allow him to perceive and repel the shadows 273.
Susanoo
Madara’s Susanoo is blue and wields twin blades. Its power and scale increase with his ocular abilities and external chakra sources 251 273.
| Form | Documented scale | Applications and outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Fourth Form | Not specified | Defensive manifestation destroyed by one Emperor Shatter punch 250. |
| Eternal Mangekyo Perfect Susanoo | About 100 meters | Produces mountain-cutting sword waves and repairs damage with chakra and eye power; ultimately cleaved apart by Rono 251 252. |
| Rinnegan-enhanced Perfect Susanoo | Over 300 meters | Greater size, defense, and destructive power than its earlier version 273. |
| Demonic Statue Armored Form | Over 1,000 meters | Wraps the statue containing eight Tailed Beasts in armor; combines sword attacks with enormous Tailed Beast Bombs 273 274. |
| Majestic Armor Thousand-Handed Buddha | About 3,000 meters | Joint construct with Hashirama; thousands of Susanoo-enhanced fists attack continuously for ten minutes 275 276. |
| Six Paths Ten-Tails Armored Form | Thousands of meters | Combines Six Paths Susanoo with the complete Ten-Tails; destroyed by Rono’s Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion 292 294. |
- Tailed Beast Bomb: Slash: Combines armored-form sword attacks with Tailed Beast Bombs; identified as his strongest attack before becoming the Ten-Tails jinchūriki 274 275.
- Chakra reinforcement: Adds the eight Tailed Beasts’ chakra as a protective cloak around his joint construct with Hashirama 278.
- Limit: Maintaining and repairing Susanoo can exhaust him despite his enhanced body 275 279.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Meteors
- Fire Release: Majestic Destroyer Flame: Used in his first clash with Rono and later through Susanoo. Rono withstands or disperses it 249 278.
- Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique: Extinguishes the fireballs produced by Rono’s Flame Emperor 250.
- Heavenly Obstacle Star: Summons enormous meteorites. His first is nearly a kilometer across; a later meteor spans several kilometers 250 279.
- Limit: Rono’s Flame Emperor consumes the initial pair of meteors, while his giant form treats the later attack as negligible 250 279.
Wood Release
- Wood Release: Multiple Shadow Clone Technique: Creates dozens of clones capable of using his techniques, including Perfect Susanoo. He deploys them to buy Hashirama preparation time 279.
- Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands: Invoked while revealing the Ten-Tails’ God Tree form 294.
Six Paths Techniques
- Sage Art: Yin Release: Lightning Dispatch: Releases branching purple lightning from his hands 291.
- Sage Art: Storm Release: Light Fang: Fires a thin, concentrated purple beam from his mouth 292.
- Truth-Seeking Balls: Appear after his Ten-Tails transformation and serve as offensive projectiles 291 296 298.
- Vacuum Fist: Acquired after the God Tree strengthens him; Rono describes it as a weaker version of Kaguya’s Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack 295.
- Limit against Rono: Rono acquires the same techniques and overpowers them through superior chakra, ocular power, and Haki-enhanced combat 291 292 295.
Regeneration and Izanagi
- Reanimation regeneration: Restores his body after otherwise fatal destruction during his first battle with Rono 249 252.
- Hashirama cells: Rapidly heal injuries after full resurrection, but do not eliminate exhaustion or the need to recover 272 275.
- Ten-Tails immortality: Allows him to recover repeatedly after Rono smashes his body apart 295.
- Izanagi: Sacrifices a Sharingan to erase unfavorable events, restore his condition, or turn apparent death into survival 275 280 281 282.
- Limits: Izanagi consumes eyes, and regeneration does not prevent sealing. Rono ultimately immobilizes him with a chakra-blocking seal 275 299.
God Tree
- Connects to living things throughout the Ninja World and drains their chakra and natural energy to strengthen Madara 294 295.
- Regenerates after Rono cuts it in two 294.
- Replaces Infinite Tsukuyomi as Madara’s immediate source of growing power 294.
- Limit: Rono severs its connections to the nearby shinobi, protecting them from the drain 294.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red battle armor: Warring States-style armor worn over black combat clothing 248.
- Spare Sharingan: Maintains enough eyes to use Izanagi repeatedly; one documented activation sacrifices a Three-Tomoe Sharingan 275 280.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path: Rinnegan-summoned vessel holding the captured Tailed Beasts. Madara armors it with Susanoo and later uses it to absorb the Nine-Tails and complete the Ten-Tails 273 291.
