Ch. 521A tangible force weighing on everyone's hearts
Plot points and events
- At the Ever Grande Conference, Steel Champion Steven Stone and President Mr. Goodshow watch the quarterfinal between Yingyue and Virgil. Steven is interested in Yingyue because he has heard the mysterious Trainer owns a Darkrai.
- Virgil enters determined to win, while Yingyue appears exhausted. The match takes place on Grassy Terrain.
- Yingyue opens with a combination of Stealth Rock and Baton Pass. Virgil’s Flareon uses Fire Spin, but Yingyue’s Misdreavus absorbs and overwhelms the flames with Nether Will-O-Wisp, knocking Flareon out.
- Virgil sends out Umbreon, which is hurt by Stealth Rock and then swiftly defeated by Misdreavus’s Dazzling Gleam.
- Shaken by the rapid losses, Virgil regains his composure after Eevee bites his ear and encourages him. The battle remains underway.
Character developments and interactions
- Steven takes Yingyue seriously as a potentially dangerous and unusual Trainer, and reflects on how overwhelming high-level Trainers can be to less-experienced opponents.
- Virgil begins confident and determined, but two quick defeats leave him disoriented and questioning himself. Eevee’s encouragement helps him steady himself and face the setback.
- Yingyue shows formidable skill and strategic control, using a switch-in tactic and Misdreavus’s strength to defeat Virgil’s Pokémon with ease. His visible exhaustion contrasts with his dominance in battle.
- Eevee acts as Virgil’s emotional support, urging him to recover rather than give in to despair. The crowd, Steven, and Goodshow also respond to the widening gap between the Trainers, though Goodshow’s attention is partly drawn to the spectacle.
Significant themes
- The crushing gap in power: The match exposes how far elite-level strength can surpass that of capable ordinary Trainers.
- Resilience in defeat: Virgil’s response to losing—and Eevee’s support—raises the question of whether he can face despair and continue.
- The psychological weight of strength: Spectators realize Yingyue had not shown his full ability in earlier matches, and that recognition casts an unsettling shadow over the Conference.
