Ch. 601Mortals must not look upon a god
Key plot points and events
- At Jervis’s command, Doka activates a massive Mega Evolution Wave using the golden scepter. Tyranitar, Aggron, and other Pokémon Mega Evolve, while a white Gengar channels energy from another dimension.
- The wave reaches Volcanion and breaks the Red Chain that binds it. Volcanion erupts in fire and steam, turning much of Nebel Plateau into an inferno.
- Doka is overwhelmed by Volcanion’s presence and burned; Jervis’s intervention knocks him away. Jervis protects himself with a veil of energy and watches to see whether Volcanion will destroy the plateau.
- Magearna enters the flames and approaches Volcanion despite the danger. Its Soul-Heart weakens as the fire burns it, and Jervis fears it cannot reach Volcanion.
Character developments and interactions
- Volcanion shifts from a restrained Pokémon into a terrifying, uncontrolled force, revealing the destructive power behind its legendary reputation.
- Doka is humbled by the encounter. He recognizes Volcanion as far beyond his own power and thereafter avoids looking at it.
- Jervis remains composed and observant, directing the energy surge while contemplating Volcanion’s nature and Magearna’s purpose. He shows a brief, unexplained reaction when Magearna advances.
- Magearna demonstrates resolve and a protective instinct, walking into the fire to reach Volcanion even as it is damaged.
- Jervis and Doka interact through Jervis’s command and his intervention to save Doka from further exposure. Magearna and Volcanion are the chapter’s central interaction: Magearna approaches the being it was created to guard against.
Significant themes
- The danger of power without control: Volcanion’s youth and emotional volatility make its immense strength especially destructive.
- Mortals confronting the divine: Volcanion’s presence overwhelms those around it, prompting the chapter’s refrain that mortals must not look upon a god.
- Purpose and sacrifice: Magearna was created specifically as a safeguard against Volcanion, and now risks itself to approach it.
- Limits of human control: The Soul-Heart and the turmoil it caused suggest that even Elifas’s advanced science could not master human nature—or the consequences of his creation.
