Background / History
Life under Latios’s protection
Before joining the Manor, Latias lived on an island under her older brother Latios’s protection. He restricted her outings because he considered the outside world dangerous. She initially accepted this arrangement, but later came to regard the island as a cage that prevented her from visiting cities, meeting Pokémon, and making friends 243.
Latios later explains that the Infinite Flute had been stolen before Team Rocket captured her. He suspects its absence contributed to his failure to notice her capture 245.
Team Rocket capture and rescue
Latias first appears injured and badly poisoned beside Team Rocket’s crashed aircraft near Hell Valley. Cliff orders Amoonguss to return her to a cage; the organization intends to make her a crucial experimental subject in its Shadow Pokémon research 27 28.
Mingyou distracts Cliff while Ogerpon approaches her. Initially distrustful after her mistreatment, Latias accepts Ogerpon’s help and senses that Mingyou is risking his life for her. Unable to extract her quietly, Ogerpon carries the entire cage to a nearby Dragon-type Tera Crystal, triggering her recovery and Terastallization 29.
Her Draco Meteor defeats most of the Rocket forces while sparing Mingyou, Ogerpon, and the captive Pokémon. Cliff’s Shadow Electivire nevertheless withstands her Dragon Pulse and knocks her down. Following Mingyou’s guidance, she uses Mist Ball as part of a coordinated counterattack that defeats the remaining opposition 30 31.
Afterward, Latias’s gratitude produces a crop-conversion card for Mingyou. Nearly recovered, she explores the Manor and asks to stay, hoping to grow stronger rather than return immediately to her brother’s protection 31 33.
Human disguise and friendship with Lillie
When Mingyou explains that appearing openly at the Festival of Masks would attract attention, Latias rejects attending invisibly because she wants to feel included. She instead devises a human-child disguise. Mingyou agrees to introduce her publicly as his younger sister 47 48 50.
Lillie initially reacts to touching Latias as she does to touching a Pokémon, despite believing her to be a human girl. Later, Latias senses her distress, listens to her explain her fear of Pokémon, and hugs her until the frightening sensation subsides. Lillie asks to exchange contact details, prompting Latias to request her own Rotom Phone 50 69 70.
Their friendship continues through messages. Latias records Munchlax’s daily life to help Lillie complete a Pokémon ecology assignment. In Eternal Forest, she reveals her true form to intervene when Duskull frighten Lillie; later, she and Zorua help subdue Milo after he attempts to abduct her and threatens Lillie 73 80 89.
By the later Alola visit, Lillie knows Latias’s identity and keeps it secret. She credits Latias with helping her overcome her trauma and become comfortable around Pokémon again 312 405.
Travels and protecting the Manor
Latias carries Mingyou and Ogerpon after Cynthia and Shali to Peat Island. During the Lily of the Valley Island operation, she watches invisibly as Riolu steals the Meadow Plate, then transports Mingyou while he follows it. She uses Psychic to stop fleeing Team Galactic members and prevents one from detonating Riolu’s bomb collar 104 132 133.
She also befriends Ralts, argues for allowing her to stay at the Manor, and carries her home so Mingyou can speak to her guardian. In Levincia’s Network World, Latias independently intercepts Iron Valiant’s attacks on Ralts, but its prediction of her Zen Headbutt leaves her badly injured 179 180 234 235.
Her human disguise does not guarantee secrecy. Tobias’s Darkrai sees through it, and cameraman A-Zhuo later recognizes her during a Manor interview despite Mingyou’s introduction of her as his sister 138 211.
Confrontation with Latios
Latios finds Latias aboard a flight to Kanto and creates dangerous turbulence while demanding her return. After landing, she blocks his attack on Mingyou and refuses to go home. She explains that life at the Manor has allowed her to pursue wishes her brother would have denied 242 243.
Mingyou proposes a battle to demonstrate her ability to live independently. Although her recent defeat by Iron Valiant has damaged her confidence, Latias gains the advantage with his guidance. Latios recognizes her progress but continues to distrust Mingyou’s influence 244.
When Latios still tries to take her home, Latias assumes her human form, clings to Mingyou, and declares that she hates her brother. She leaves with Mingyou rather than returning to the island 245.
Ultra Space rescue and competitive battles
At Aether Paradise, Latias helps confront Zhe Si’s hostage plot. When Lillie is pulled into an Ultra Wormhole, she carries Mingyou through it before it closes. Despite suffering from Ultra Space’s harmful conditions, she synchronizes with him and Mega Evolves to catch Lillie after Zhe Si throws her away 410.
Her new form lets her exploit the turbulence to overtake Celesteela. The Mega Evolution ends after they emerge in the freezing Crown Tundra, and she cannot immediately reproduce it during their subsequent flight 411 412.
She later successfully uses Mega Evolution in the match against Raihan, defeating Flygon and Goodra before Mingyou sends out Miraidon against Duraludon. She also faces Cynthia’s Spiritomb without Mega Evolving; afterward, she is dejected over that day’s match, though the supplied account does not detail its outcome 451 459 461.
Appearance
Latias’s true form has a streamlined, jet-like body, white above and red below, with wings extending from her sides 27.
- Facial markings: A hollow red triangle on her face, a white pentagonal forehead marking, and triangular ears 27.
- Chest marking: A distinctive blue triangle 27.
- Feathers: Exceptionally soft to the touch; stroking them tickles her 104.
- Human disguise: A petite girl with straight, short white hair, bangs, and a round, babyish face. Her initial outfit is a short red dress with a hollow blue triangle over the chest 48.
- Apparent human age: Lillie estimates that she looks about six, despite her actual age being approximately a century 69.
- Dragon Terastallization: A crystalline coating and a miniature dragon-shaped Tera Jewel on her head 29.
- Mega Evolution: Purple coloration, enlarged eyes, triangular markings shifted to her arms, and wings fused with her arms into a more streamlined shape. Her eyes are described as golden during the Raihan match 410 451.
Personality
Latias is emotionally perceptive but inexperienced with many aspects of human life. She initially assumes phones are primarily for payments and becomes confused by Lillie’s discussion of charity. She is proud of her clever ideas, dislikes being called foolish, and readily pouts when Mingyou teases her 48 70 140.
Her confidence often conceals insecurity. After Team Rocket’s abuse, she distrusts strangers and exaggerates her strength until the Manor’s residents make her feel safe. Defeat by Iron Valiant later undermines her confidence, while successful teamwork with Mingyou helps restore it 29 243 244.
She strongly values freedom, inclusion, and affection. She prefers participating visibly in celebrations, wants fashionable clothes of her own, and eagerly interrupts a televised interview to get on camera. Her attachment to her Rotom Phone eventually becomes a concern for Mingyou 47 69 211 242.
Latias is fiercely protective of friends and hostile toward Pokémon abusers. She attacks threats to Lillie and Ralts even when frightened or without Mingyou’s direction. Her cleanliness obsession also affects her battles: Raihan’s sandstorm and Goodra’s sticky slime particularly upset her 80 133 234 450 451.
Abilities & Skills
Telepathy and emotional perception
Latias communicates thoughts and emotions through Telepathy and is exceptionally sensitive to others’ feelings 27 33.
- Recognizes Mingyou’s intentions during her rescue and senses Lillie’s sadness and fear 29 69 70.
- Uses subtle psychic communication while disguised, allowing Lillie to understand her question without noticing its source 70.
- Does not speak human language aloud; she often relies on gestures or messages to avoid exposing her identity 69 70.
Light refraction and disguise
Her glasslike feathers refract light, allowing her to conceal herself or change her visible appearance 47 48.
- Invisibility: Watches Riolu without being detected and conceals Mingyou during their aerial observation of Team Galactic 132 133.
- Human appearance: Usually takes the form of a little girl for outings and play at the Manor 63 104.
- Limits: Initially cannot battle while maintaining the disguise and cannot freely imitate arbitrary forms like Ditto 49.
- Detection: Tobias’s Darkrai can see through the disguise 138.
- Instruction: Attempts to teach Reshiram to assume human form, but Reshiram lacks her refraction ability and produces an incomplete imitation 355.
Flight and Levitate
Latias can carry passengers and rapidly accelerate in her jet-like true form 104.
- Transports Mingyou, Ogerpon, Ralts, and Lillie on documented journeys 104 179 412.
- Uses Mental Power to keep rain off herself and Kirlia during a flight 340.
- Avoids flying too high because she fears the cold 104.
- Her airborne position keeps Cynthia’s Toxic Spikes from affecting her 459.
Mental Power and battle techniques
Latias can manipulate targets, create protective constructs, and combine psychic control with Dragon-type attacks 63 133 244.
| Technique | Documented use or limitation |
|---|---|
| Draco Meteor | Defeats most of Cliff’s forces while sparing allies and captives. Early use takes a heavy toll and leaves her briefly vulnerable afterward 30 31. |
| Dragon Pulse | Used against Cliff’s Shadow Electivire and in her confrontation with Latios 30 244. |
| Mist Ball | Creates cover during the coordinated counterattack against Cliff 31. |
| Psychic | Seizes fleeing Crobat and restrains Team Galactic. Also proves super effective against Iron Valiant 133 235. |
| Zen Headbutt | Attempts to intercept Iron Valiant, but its prediction of the attack leads to her being countered with Night Slash 235. |
| Barrier Bash | Learned from a White Apricorn; manifests a transparent, glasslike barrier around her body 63. |
| Flash | Illuminates the darkened laboratory during the Aether Paradise confrontation 409. |
| Psychic sensing | Sees through Eternal Forest’s fog and detects an approaching presence in the Crown Tundra 80 411. |
Her raw strength initially exceeds her battle experience: Mingyou observes that she trades blows haphazardly. She performs more effectively when following his tactical direction, though she also acts independently to protect others 31 234 244.
Mega Evolution
Latias first Mega Evolves through complete synchronization with Mingyou during their shared effort to save Lillie 410.
- No stones required: Mingyou publicly confirms that her transformation does not require a Key Stone or Evolution Stone 451.
- Ordinary stated speed: Mingyou gives her maximum speed as Mach 4 during the Raihan match 451.
- Ultra Space acceleration: During the rescue, she surpasses light speed; afterward, she uses Ultra Space’s turbulence to accelerate beyond light speed from a standing start 410 411.
- Initial instability: The transformation ends in the Crown Tundra’s cold, and she cannot immediately activate it again 411 412.
Equipment / Items
- Rotom Phone — Requested so she could message Lillie. Mingyou agrees to buy an inexpensive model; she later uses it extensively, including to tease Carmine 70 73 242.
- Clefairy mask — Chosen for the Festival of Masks; Lillie wears the same kind 50.
- White dress hat — Worn with her human disguise and associated with her growing interest in human clothing 69 70.
- Pink Gengar plushie — Won for her by Mingyou during an arcade outing 404.
- Waterheart Peach conversion card — Appears after her rescue and is labeled “Latias (Lv. 2).” It converts a peach tree into a Waterheart Peach tree whose fruit enhances Mental Power; the level is attached to the crop card, not established as her combat level 31.
Relationships
- Mingyou — Rescuer, guardian, chosen family, and battle partner. She explicitly distinguishes him from a friend because he is family, later declares herself his Pokémon, and protects him from Latios 29 70 243 244.
- Latios — Biological older brother. His protective restrictions drive her desire for independence; she refuses to return with him even after he recognizes her improved strength. He is distinct from Tobias’s Latios 33 140 243 244 245.
- Ogerpon — Rescuer and close Manor companion. Ogerpon earns her trust during the cage rescue, enthusiastically welcomes her human disguise, and embraces her after the Eternal Forest incident 29 49 89.
- Lillie — First human friend. Their messages, affectionate contact, and mutual protection help Lillie recover her ability to interact with Pokémon. Lillie later knows and protects Latias’s secret identity 70 73 89 312 405 410.
- Ralts / Kirlia — Close friend whom Latias advocates for and repeatedly protects. They later investigate suspicious attackers together 179 180 234 235 340.
- Gible — Fellow Manor resident whom she helps include in outings, picking fruit for him and bringing him to the festival 49 50.
- Carmine — Messaging acquaintance and prank target. Their unresolved New Year’s quarrel leads Latias to send amusing stories about Mingyou while Carmine is in class 242.
- Reshiram — Would-be pupil in human disguise. Latias proudly presents its attempted transformation as her “masterpiece,” then is disappointed when Mingyou asks it to change back 355.
- Cliff / Team Rocket — Captors who planned to turn her into a Shadow Pokémon. Their abuse leaves her distrustful and fuels her anger toward similar criminals 28 29 133.
- Tobias — Expresses interest in catching a Latias, frightening her into hiding behind Mingyou, but states that he does not intend to take Mingyou’s Pokémon 138.
