Background / History

Several hundred years before meeting Mingyou, Ogerpon traveled to Kitakami with a companion who had cared for her since childhood. Much of that journey—and eventually his appearance—faded from her memory. A sympathetic mask maker created four masks that allowed them to join village festivities without being rejected 129 131.

The masks attracted three Pokémon who coveted their value and power. While Ogerpon was fetching water, they entered her home, killed her companion, and stole three masks. He protected the Teal Mask at the cost of his life. Ogerpon later found herself in the village after beating the three thieves to death with her Ivy Cudgel. Frightened by her first acts of violence, she endured the villagers’ stones and fled without recovering the stolen masks 131.

Kitakami reversed the victims’ and attackers’ roles: Ogerpon became its dreaded ogre, while the dead thieves were honored as the Loyal Three. The mask maker tried to defend her but was persecuted to death; his descendants preserved the truth privately. Pecharunt also deliberately sustained Ogerpon’s reputation as a scapegoat after she had struck it down centuries earlier 159 200.

Ogerpon spent centuries on Oni Mountain, isolated from the village. By her first meeting with Mingyou, she had also lost the Teal Mask and was covering her face with a plastic bag. Dusknoir is later identified as the thief responsible for taking her mask and injuring her 4 84 361.

Appearance

• Small, childlike build: Her height gives Mingyou a grade-schooler’s perspective during synchronization. Strangers frequently mistake her for a masked human child 107 276 283.
• Orange, rounded face: Described as resembling a mandarin orange, with small visible fangs when she smiles 10 131 172.
• Starry eyes and thornlike horns: Her horns pierce the plastic bag she initially wears over her head 4 325.

Personality

Ogerpon initially expects rejection. She trembles when Mingyou recognizes her, waits for a scolding after breaking a plate, and is satisfied simply to be somewhere that nobody dislikes or chases her away. Her fear of abandonment becomes especially clear when Mingyou jokingly claims to be dying after eating spicy citrus 4 10 13 22.

Her affection is practical and attentive. She brings Mingyou wild Berries, helps with chores, watches over him when he is unwell, and worries even over minor cuts or falls. Other Pokémon trust her with concerns they hesitate to bring to Mingyou; she listens, encourages them, and readily arranges lessons or practice 13 159 275 276.

Despite her gentleness, Ogerpon is fiercely protective. She will tolerate mistreatment of herself more readily than threats against Mingyou, and she independently confronts Team Rocket to protect his date with Akari. She also enforces personal boundaries, striking Calyrex when he lifts her cloak without permission 68 209 282 283.

Her confidence grows without erasing her warmth. She apologizes to Ursaluna for misjudging him, accepts Carmine’s apology, and becomes a peacemaker among newer companions. By the Masters Tournament final, she willingly exposes her face before the world rather than using her mask to hide 88 173 257 476.
