Background / History
Guardian of the Abyssal Ruins
Meloetta’s history reaches back to the Kingdom of Unova. A thousand years before the present story, she agreed to protect the Abyssal Ruins alongside human guardians. Their descendants treated that promise as a permanent obligation, while Meloetta wanted to share her music freely rather than remain bound to the ruins 267 279 338.
Ghetsis later reveals a darker purpose behind the guardianship. Meloetta’s long lifespan made her suitable for sealing the God Stone; the traditional process required her to sacrifice her life through Relic Song. The guardians’ descendants were entrusted with locating the ruins through Meloetta and using her life, together with the Light Stone or Dark Stone, to awaken the sealed stone 346.
Escape to Blueberry Academy
According to Drayton, Team Rocket captured Meloetta roughly a year before he confronted Mingyou. Drayden and the guardians rescued her, but she escaped during the confusion and hid aboard a passenger ship bound for Blueberry Academy. Tobias eventually passed this lead to Mingyou, warning that her pursuers had not abandoned the search 142 267 279.
At the academy, sightings around the Terarium and cafeteria became a campus legend. Meloetta secretly followed Mingyou’s group and watched his interactions with his Pokémon. After Ogerpon reached toward her invisible presence, she accidentally collided with Mingyou and became visible; Lacey’s excited recognition immediately frightened her into fleeing 255 259 260.
Befriending Mingyou
Shali guided Mingyou to a Coastal Biome location where she had photographed Meloetta singing. Finding her performing beside a lone flower, Mingyou interpreted the song as lonely and stopped Shali from disturbing her. He instead chose to approach through music 261 263.
Mingyou practiced a harmonica melody overnight, unknowingly selecting the ancient Relic Song. Meloetta recognized the supposedly lost tune and valued the sincerity of his imperfect playing. She joined him, corrected his rhythm, and transformed into Pirouette Forme during their duet—her first performance with a partner rather than merely an audience 266 267.
Afterward, Meloetta shared her experiences through psychic communication. When Drayton demanded custody of her on his grandfather’s behalf, she became frightened. Mingyou refused to surrender her, and he and Akari defeated Drayton, Nari, and Lacey in the ensuing battle. Meloetta responded with open affection, while Mingyou promised protection and help returning home 267 268.
That promise changed when Mingyou understood that she did not want to return to her inherited duty. Meloetta admitted that she wanted freedom, and he pledged to oppose anyone trying to reclaim her. He later rejected the guardians’ claim of kinship, declaring himself her family 279 286.
Joining Mingyou’s Team
Meloetta accompanied Mingyou through the confrontation with Colress near Giant Chasm. Her Relic Song calmed controlled Pokémon, and she tried to reach Riolu when he was forced to attack Mingyou. After Riolu evolved into Lucario, she resumed singing to support the fight 298 300 301.
Following the incident, Meloetta asked to become Mingyou’s Pokémon so they could remain together and she could repay his protection. Mingyou rejected the idea of a debt but welcomed her as a companion. She willingly entered his Poké Ball without resistance and began imagining a new song about their experiences 305.
Illness and Kyurem’s Control
During the Junior Cup period, Meloetta developed a fever that Calyrex suspected was not an ordinary cold. Later, while gathering her friends’ preferences for a new composition, she dreamed of an ancient pyramid and recovered memories of her duty to the Abyssal Ruins. Her worsening condition prompted Mingyou to investigate Ripple Bay 326 337 338.
While he was away, Bianco and other guardian descendants affiliated with Team Plasma attacked Cynthia’s Villa to abduct her. Ogerpon and the household Pokémon defeated the operation, with Ogerpon turning Cofagrigus’s attempted capture into an infiltration of the attackers’ own group 338 340.
Meloetta subsequently insisted on seeing the ruins again. Their emergence overwhelmed her, and Mingyou resolved to destroy the place rather than allow its ancient promise to keep hurting her. The Dragon Stone Tablet’s absorption of the God Stone was later identified as having influenced Meloetta; after awakening, Kyurem bound her to its body and used her as a shield 343 346.
Mingyou reached her consciousness through the Synchronizer, using her notebook and their shared promise to restore her memories. Together, they expelled Kyurem’s consciousness and reclaimed control of her body. By the journey toward Kitakami, Meloetta no longer hid herself and eagerly observed the unfamiliar scenery 347 350.
Musical Career and First Galar Concert
Calyrex originally assembled Meloetta’s band to create game music, but she increasingly managed it herself. Her commitment to the musicians was strong enough that she stayed behind during Mingyou’s journey to retrieve Miraidon rather than abandon the band 363 428.
Her online career grew rapidly: twenty-three Pokémon TV videos accumulated more than 180 million combined views, excluding fan-made videos using her songs. Mingyou became her manager and arranged her first Galar concert in Spikemuth with Piers’s band. Concert pressure temporarily left her irritable and unable to compose, so he encouraged her to take a restorative trip to Hoenn 428 429 434.
In Mossdeep, Meloetta led Ogerpon and Miraidon in a search for Jirachi. Her song reached the life inside a sacred boulder and helped awaken him. She took him in as a little brother, wanting him to enjoy ordinary Pokémon life rather than wake only to fulfill other people’s wishes 440 441.
After the meteor crisis, she chose to realize the concert through work and cooperation rather than a wish. Jirachi joined the newly established Mythical Future Band, and Meloetta guided its members through preparations 449.
At the Spikemuth concert, encouragement from Jirachi and Mingyou helped her perform confidently. Her finale told the story of a girl bound by fate for a thousand years who found hope through someone’s promise. She brought Mingyou, Akari, and their friends onstage and thanked them aloud, revealing that she had secretly learned human speech 452 453.
Appearance
Meloetta’s appearance incorporates musical notation, with distinct colors and dress-like silhouettes for her two forms 259 266.
- Aria Forme: Pale green hair marked like musical measures; slender arms and oval hands resembling quarter notes; bright, pupil-less eyes resembling whole notes 259.
- Forehead ornament: A turquoise gem beneath a black treble-clef-shaped ornament 259.
- Dress-like body: A black waist with a green band and a high-slit-dress appearance that leaves her pale legs visible 259.
- Pirouette Forme: Orange hair curled upward, orange eyes and forehead gem, and a flared skirt accompanying ballerina-like dancing 266.
- Musical effects: Colored notes appear around her during singing, psychic communication, and some movements 260 267 294.
Personality
Meloetta is gentle, curious, and free-spirited, but being hunted made her wary of humans. In Aria Forme she initially appears timid and easily startled; Pirouette Forme makes her noticeably more outgoing, bold, and aggressive 259 260 267 445.
She values heartfelt music over technical perfection and shares melodies equally with humans and Pokémon who appreciate them. Although she dislikes fighting, she willingly uses her music to protect companions and later fights fiercely when Jirachi is endangered 259 266 269 445.
Her early dependence on Mingyou includes repeated fears that she is causing trouble or owes him repayment. Over time, she becomes an independent composer, bandleader, and protective older sister. She insists on learning her friends’ interests firsthand, but her dedication can become perfectionism severe enough to cause creative burnout 293 305 337 434 441.

Relic Song and Form Changes
Relic Song is an ancient melody Meloetta recognizes from the Kingdom of Unova, believed lost for thousands of years. Singing it allows her to change between Aria Forme and Pirouette Forme 266 267.
- Emotional calming: Soothes berserk Pokémon and reduces the aggression induced by Colress’s Controller 298 300.
- Sleep: Calmed Pokémon fall asleep after her performance during the roadside control incident 298.

Psychic Communication and Perception
Meloetta uses psychic power to convey experiences directly and deepen mutual understanding with humans 267.
- Touches Mingyou’s forehead and shares her past through musical notes and psychic imagery 267.
- Searches the sacred boulder for life; the heartbeat responds specifically to the melody within her power rather than ordinary psychic detection 440.

Invisibility and Flight
Meloetta can become invisible and hover, allowing her to follow others or remain close without being seen 142 259 305.
- Uses invisibility to evade attention at Blueberry Academy and later avoid the disruption caused by her fame 255 435.

- Human speech: Secretly learns to speak human languages aloud, rather than relying on telepathy, and reveals the skill at her concert 453.
- Teaching: Shares melodies with Mingyou’s Pokémon and develops the musical abilities of her band members 269 449.
