Appearance
A Clockwork Sprite is a small spherical construct assembled from upper and lower brass shells. Its copper or brass casing encloses its control and visual-link components, while hinged artificial wings provide flight. 1 2
- Brass or copper outer casing, often reflecting a golden sheen in flight. 1 31
- Two brass shell halves surrounding a central core. 2
- Two pairs of hinged, artificial cicada wings on standard models. 2
- Remote Sensing Stones embedded in its shell for visual linkage. 2
- Type II models used in the Elpaxin competition have notably agile copper wings and are easier to operate than older versions. 31
Function and Operation
Flight and Visual Link
Clockwork Sprites fly through rapidly vibrating artificial wings and transmit visual information to their operator through embedded Remote Sensing Stones. 2
- Powered by a magic-infused, attribute-less crystal rod installed in the core. 2
- Can be recharged by removing the Pillar Crystal and placing it into a Magic Furnace. 2
- Support Normal, Narrow Field of View, and Wide Field of View detection modes. 32
- Wide Field of View Mode lets an operator rapidly survey and memorize complex terrain, though it demands greater control skill. 32
Control Interface
A Sprite is controlled through a glove-mounted dial and silver rails. Each rail pair corresponds to a Sprite’s horizontal and vertical flight axes. 15
- Flight control is considered extremely complex due to the need to coordinate pitch, yaw, and wing posture. 2 15
- Basic flight is accessible to users with Magic Device knowledge, but sustained, stable operation is much more difficult. 27
- Clockwork Sprites do not require Magic Adaptability, making them suitable for ordinary users as well as alchemists and Combat Artificers. 27
- A Flexible Construct’s core crystal must supply mana equal to the operator’s mana expenditure; furnace output therefore limits practical multi-control. 27
Reconnaissance
The Sprite’s primary purpose is airborne scouting and remote observation. 1 2
- Scarpe locates one concealed in brush during the Vanna Forest expedition. 1
- Fang Heng uses one to survey routes and monitor threats while moving through hostile territory. 3 10
- An enemy-operated Sprite follows Fang Heng after he leaves the temple; its route indicates that another observer is relaying his position. 10
- Fang Heng employs a Sprite in the arena to break Hong Ye’s visual lock on his Walker without physically striking her. 42
Tactical Interference
Though fragile, a Sprite can be maneuvered as a precise battlefield tool.
- Fang Heng uses one to interfere with an enemy ranger’s judgment during his first battle against the Silverwood Spear. 4
- He intercepts Qin Zhi’s arrow with a Sprite, sacrificing its casing and visual-link crystal to save an injured Dawnstar warrior. 6
- During the Dragon Horn Hall escape, he reels a Sprite back after it strikes a Dragon Person’s ankle and causes it to stumble. 47
Improvised Explosive Conversion
Fang Heng modifies an unfinished Sprite into a disposable explosive after Scarpe’s death. 9
- He removes its original internal structure, retaining its control hinge. 9
- He installs a Magic Musket firing mechanism, catalyst, and an overheated attribute-less crystal in place of its visual-link crystal. 9
- The hinge triggers the primer; the overheated crystal expands and shatters, scattering the Sprite’s casing as lethal fragments. 9
- The resulting blast kills two attackers below Fang Heng’s position. 9
Known Configurations
| Configuration | Description |
|---|---|
| Standard Clockwork Sprite | A spherical scouting tool with brass shells, Remote Sensing Stones, hinged wings, and an attribute-less crystal core. 2 |
| Clockwork Sprite Type II | A competition-issued model with exceptionally agile copper wings; Fang Heng uses it during the Elpaxin Artisan Challenge. 31 |
| Fang Heng’s explosive Sprite | An unfinished Sprite rebuilt with a Magic Musket firing mechanism, catalyst, and an overheated crystal as an improvised bomb. 9 |
Documented Operators
- Fang Heng / Ed / Shaya — A highly skilled operator who learns basic flight in roughly three months, becomes proficient after another month, and can barely control two Sprites simultaneously after six months. 2 15
- Scarpe — Finds a Sprite in Vanna Forest and recognizes Fang Heng’s ability to operate one despite his lack of Magic Adaptability. 1
- Miya — Helps Fang Heng recharge and prepare his Sprite, while judging his control skill to exceed that of some official alchemists. 2
- Kaka — Operates an enemy Sprite that tracks Fang Heng through the ruins; it is destroyed by a frost arrow. 10 11
- Hong Ye — Returns Fang Heng’s Clockwork Sprite after their match, having faced its use as a visual disruption tool during the fight. 42 43
Story Role / Major Appearances
- During the Vanna Forest expedition, Scarpe discovers a concealed Clockwork Sprite, and Fang Heng’s ability to operate it establishes his unusual aptitude as an alchemist. 1
- Fang Heng recharges his Sprite before the expedition’s combat operation; Miya explains its construction, flight mechanism, and reconnaissance function. 2
- In the conflict with the Silverwood Spear, Fang Heng uses a Sprite to disrupt an opponent’s judgment and secure kills despite being unable to keep pace with combat specialists. 4
- He sacrifices a Sprite to block Qin Zhi’s sniper arrow, saving a Dawnstar warrior. 6
- After Scarpe dies, Fang Heng converts an unfinished Sprite into an explosive device and uses it to kill two attackers. 9
- Fang Heng later enters the Elpaxin Artisan Challenge with a Type II Sprite, displaying Short-Range Takeoff, Four-Winged Dance, and Wide Field of View Mode. 31 32
- In the competition’s second stage, he demonstrates synchronized dual control and enough remaining capacity to imply potential triple control. 34
- During the Dark Dragon incident, Fang Heng again uses a Sprite for scouting and direct interference against Dragon People. 42 45 47
Trivia
- Clockwork Sprites are associated with alchemists, yet their lack of a Magic Adaptability requirement has also made them popular enough for rental shops and public control competitions. 2 27
- Fang Heng initially calls the advanced Four-Winged Dance technique “Flap Wings,” unaware that it is regarded as a professional Combat Artificer skill. 34
- Fang Heng’s first three Clockwork Sprites are damaged or lost during the Elven Ruins incident. 14
