Corban Yaxley's eyes widened in horror, his pupils contracting sharply as though he had seen something terrifying.
Will was startled too.
The newcomer was an old man.
He was as gaunt as a skeleton, wrapped in a tattered robe that looked ready to fall apart in a breeze. His eyes were sunken, and he had few teeth left. He looked like a walking corpse on the verge of death.
But his mismatched eyes were bright.
The other Death Eaters had no idea why Yaxley was so frightened. They did not recognize the old man.
Yaxley, however, had seen enough of the world to know exactly who he was—Grindelwald. Gellert Grindelwald, the terrifying man who had once nearly turned all of Europe upside down before Dumbledore personally sent him to Nurmengard.
Yaxley's mind raced as cold sweat ran down his back.
He had no idea how he had run into this man here. Even his master, Voldemort, was wary of him.
Will was baffled too. Grindelwald had actually come out?
Leaving Nurmengard was no easy matter. At the very least, the old man would only agree to it if Dumbledore approved.
Was Dumbledore going after Voldemort and had sent Grindelwald to see what was happening here?

"How are you—weren't you—" Yaxley stammered, then turned and roared at Will and Barty Crouch Jr., "You two, move!"
Will and Barty Crouch Jr. immediately lunged toward the Time-Turners in the center of the hall.
"No rush." Grindelwald's voice was hoarse, like two rough stones grinding together. He held a battered Wand, and a dark green spell shot toward Will and Barty Crouch Jr.
Yaxley's pupils contracted. He swung his Wand sharply.
