Background and History

Yan Qingsui is the son of Sword Venerable Jinglin. Raised with his father’s instruction and resources, he nevertheless resented living in Jinglin’s shadow. At the Heavenly Evolution Sword Sect, he developed a reputation for recklessly challenging fellow disciples to duels 80 87 98.

While traveling with fellow disciples, Yan was captured by Demonic Cultivators and implanted with a Blood Gu; his companions died. Qiao Ranran treated him with Silver Needles, changing the Gu from a drain on his vitality into a potential aid to cultivation. He regained the ability to circulate Spiritual Power, though his former cultivation did not return immediately. Yan and Jinglin kept Qiao’s role in his recovery concealed while they investigated what had happened 12 63 179.

After returning home, Yan came to understand why Jinglin had given him the Profound Abyss Sword: it had accompanied his father for years, rather than being a weapon he had simply discarded. Father and son grew closer, though Jinglin continued to curb Yan’s recklessness 87 335.

Personality

Yan is outspoken, competitive, and quick to draw his sword, but he becomes less interested in proving himself through every confrontation as he gains friends. He is openly loyal to Qiao Ranran, investigates how her former sect treated her, and defends her when others condemn her 98 163 170.

His teasing often masks concern. He argues with Tao Doudou while training and protecting her, and criticizes Wei Huai’s sword path while denying that he worries about him. In dangerous fights, Yan can set pride aside and call for help 207 227 293 303.

Swordsmanship

Yan specializes in direct, forceful sword combat. His Sword Intent is more domineering than Wei Huai’s, and he can fight above his cultivation level 170 300.

• Uses the Profound Abyss Sword to block powerful attacks as well as strike; its broad blade shields much of his body 215.
• Cleaves through the Azure Dragon Divine Sword’s oppressive pressure with a burst of sword qi, opening a path beneath the sea for Tao Doudou 228.

Blood Gu-Assisted Cultivation

Qiao’s treatment reverses the Blood Gu’s harmful effect, allowing it to return purer Spiritual Power and vital blood to Yan. His cultivation subsequently rises rapidly, although he still needs to temper his state of mind; by the later God-Demon Battlefield Ruins expedition, he has overcome the Gu problem 12 205 300.

• After Qiao’s disappearance: Yan searches for news of her and raids Demonic Cultivator encampments. Jinglin eventually confines him in a formation, which Yan escapes once before being returned to a stronger version 335.
