Background / History

Childhood and Early Martial Training

Xu Mingshu was born into the Xu Household as Xu Mingxian’s elder twin. At their one-month celebration, Xu Chuan entered both children into the lineage register. Although Mingshu had neither a recorded talent nor bloodline and lacked immortal-cultivation aptitude, the register noted her unusually powerful soul and keen spiritual perception. Xu Chuan considered these qualities promising for taming fierce beasts 15.

The family doted on her, and Xu Chuan acknowledged that this had made her somewhat unruly. At the fruit shop’s opening, she greeted Yang Zhao as her godfather and received his jade pendant 24. She later developed enough martial strength to defeat Wu Youdao, a prospective marriage candidate, leaving him seriously injured and forcing the Wu Household to reassess the Xu family’s strength 59.

Marriage Disputes

Mingshu rejected Zhu Feng’s attentions during Xu Mingyuan’s wedding. Bai Jing refused the Zhu family’s proposed match, while the Wu Household Head judged Zhu Feng unworthy of her 59.

A later proposal that she marry Li Zhi caused a more direct family dispute. Mingshu explained that she regarded him as an older brother rather than a romantic partner. She wanted a husband stronger than herself, as devoted as Xu Mingwei, and as intelligent as Xu Chuan; she preferred remaining unmarried to accepting an unsuitable match. Xu Mingyuan supported allowing her to choose her own path, while Mingwei tried to mediate between her and Bai Jing 96 97.

Zhou Sen subsequently considered pairing her with Zhou Shaocheng, who was immediately attracted to her. The discovery that she was a Qi Refining cultivator ended that proposal: Zhou Sen recognized that the Xu Household would be unlikely to let her marry out. Xu Chuan reassured Mingshu that any future alliance would be considered carefully and with respect for family members’ wishes 152.

Independent Travels and the Taishu Feud

During more than a year of independent travel, Mingshu killed hostile rogue cultivators and survived pursuit by the Black Flame Taishu Household. Its cultivators had tried to capture her and seal her magic power to force her submission; she killed the attackers and escaped. She also discovered a small black-cloud spirit-iron mine and used its ore to expand her iron-eater flying ant colony 205.

After rejoining her siblings in Copper Mountain Commandery, she encountered Taishu Ze, the father of one of the men she had killed. Xu Mingyuan helped turn the confrontation into a witnessed death match whose outcome would formally settle the households’ grievance. Mingshu understood the plan, accepted the duel, and killed Taishu Ze with a spiritual-consciousness strike followed by the Black Baleful Flag. Taishu Feng honored the agreement, and she claimed the defeated man’s possessions 205 206.

Wuhua Secret Realm

Mingshu entered the Wuhua Secret Realm in the poisonous Black Marsh. After surviving an attack by two demonic cultivators with Xu Ying’s assistance, she gathered their belongings and kill tokens before heading toward the Mist Forest 214.

She reunited with the Xu expedition, helped its members secure a wolf demon’s cave, and reached Foundation Establishment there. Afterward, she explored north independently; her group accounted for most of the expedition’s Foundation Establishment demon-beast kills during that phase of gathering 214.

Her insects subsequently helped detect threats and conceal the destruction of a hostile Sima Clan party. The expedition sacrificed the insects used to consume the wounded because their bodies carried suspicious energy traces. At the trial’s conclusion, her Foundation Establishment cultivation was publicly revealed alongside Xu Mingxuan’s and Xu Mingxian’s 215 216.

Golden Core and Later Activities

After completing Core Formation, Mingshu continued cultivating and nurturing spirit beasts. She defeated Lei Yunpeng in a public duel by combining the Black Dragon Banner’s spirit attacks with a high-grade defensive Azure Shield 387 447. Her later routine centered on beast cultivation, strengthening the Heavenly Beauty Sect, and advancing her own realm 468.

When Bai Jing’s life approached its end, Mingshu struggled to accept that the household’s resources could not save her. After Bai Jing’s death, she and Xu Mingxian remained nearby while Xu Chuan mourned, and supported honoring their mother’s wish to remain in Dongxi 477 478.

Xu Chuan later entrusted her with the Ten Thousand Spirits Art, a beast-taming inheritance extending to Nascent Soul perfection 516. She accompanied him back to Yunxi after Little White survived his transformation lightning tribulation 624.

Her independence is most apparent in marriage matters. Familiarity, wealth, and family convenience do not persuade her to accept a partner she does not want. She distinguishes sibling-like affection from romantic attachment and insists on strength, devotion, and intelligence in a prospective husband 59 97.

She is quick to confront mistreatment, including the injury of a household guard, but her brothers sometimes reprimand her impulsiveness. Travel sharpens her judgment: during the Taishu dispute, she immediately understands why a public death match offers a safer resolution than an open feud 125 126 205.
