Ch. 101A Divine Kingdom?
Plot points and events
- Mutants across the block charge Morlun, convinced that Russell—whom they call Om Messiah—is their god and that dying in battle will earn them eternal life in Valhalla.
- Their fervor comes from more than Russell’s power: it reflects generations of oppression and the Mutants’ longing for someone to lead them. Their faith generates a massive flow of Faith Power, which reaches Russell at the Sanctum Sanctorum.
- Russell sends the fighters a brief vision of himself as a colossal divine figure and tells them, “I heard you” and “You have done well.” The reassurance intensifies their devotion and fighting strength.
- Morlun is overwhelmed by coordinated attacks and baffled by the Mutants’ willingness to sacrifice themselves. When he prepares to retaliate, a Chitauri Warship arrives, declaring that it has come on Om Messiah’s orders to clear the area.
- Meanwhile, Russell’s system announces that his Faith reserves have met the final requirement to unlock the option of establishing an exclusive Divine Kingdom. He is stunned by the possibility.
Character developments
- Russell discovers that his influence has grown into organized religious devotion. Though he intended only to encourage the Mutants, his response reinforces their belief in him, and the Faith Power they produce unlocks a major new possibility.
- The Mutants transform from an oppressed, leaderless population into a unified force. Their faith gives them purpose and apparent strength, but also makes them willing to risk their lives.
- Morlun becomes increasingly frustrated and alarmed by the fighters’ seemingly inexhaustible resolve. He expected a quick hunt, not a full-scale assault backed by a warship.
Significant themes
- Faith as power: Belief produces tangible force, strengthening Russell’s influence and the Mutants’ resolve.
- Liberation and leadership: The Mutants’ devotion grows from long-standing oppression and a deep need for hope and direction.
- The danger of unintended worship: Russell’s modest encouragement is interpreted as divine favor, accelerating a movement he did not deliberately create.
- Sacrifice and conviction: The Mutants’ faith blurs the line between courage and fanaticism.
Character interactions
- Russell answers the Mutants’ collective prayers with a vision and a few reassuring words, deepening their bond with him.
- The Mutants respond by intensifying their attacks on Morlun, while he dismisses their behavior as madness and fights back.
- The Chitauri squadron intervenes explicitly under Russell’s authority, turning the confrontation into a military operation and leaving Morlun incredulous.
