Background / History
Greninja comes from the Borderlands and is the son of Xu Feng’s Greninja. His father serves among the core Pokémon of an Invincible Trainer’s team. Xu Qingqing recognizes him from his younger days, establishing that he was already familiar with members of the Xu family before joining Xu Mu 133 158 249 345.
Xu Feng, Greninja’s first Trainer, sends him to accompany and protect Xu Mu. Their first handshake activates the Pokémon Check-In System. Although Greninja initially stays because of Xu Feng’s instructions, the school battle convinces him to follow Xu Mu out of personal respect 1 4 298.
Within a year, Greninja surpasses his father, but he becomes uneasy about power supplied by forces beyond his own training. As Xu Mu’s challenges grow, his declining ability to decide battles threatens his pride and sense of purpose. Xu Mu responds by awakening his Battle Soul rather than allowing his first partner to fall behind; Greninja accepts the power as another means of protecting him 345 346.
Appearance
- Dark-blue body: His coloration is noted when he first emerges from the gifted Poké Ball 1.
- Clawed hands: He extends a hand or claw to greet Xu Mu and later uses it for challenging gestures 1 125.
- Bond Form: Battle Bond initially surrounds him in brilliant white light resembling evolution; later activations also envelop him in water 14 191 384.
- Sharingan: Acquires the eye power as a system reward and demonstrates it against Metagross 298 301.
Personality
Greninja is lively, theatrical, and intensely eager to battle. His customary entrance includes a grand pledge to serve the Xu family “for generations,” often embarrassing Xu Mu. Strong opponents excite him, while prolonged periods without a meaningful fight leave him frustrated 3 75 99 384 446.
His bravado conceals considerable tactical intelligence. He provokes opponents into anger, exploits their mistakes, and can conduct a battle without waiting for detailed commands. His conduct ranges from playful mockery to deliberately humiliating or brutal attacks: he wears Shiftry down through insults, torments Moltres at close range, and continues beating Zeraora until Xu Mu intervenes 126 280 426.
Greninja also behaves like the team’s senior officer. He trains newcomers, chooses tournament lineups, assigns battle roles, and jokingly regards Xu Mu as his “puppet” Trainer. Despite these attempts to take charge, he obeys Xu Mu when it matters, including suppressing Battle Bond, ending a fight, or withdrawing at his limit 4 114 158 237 426.
His central motivation is protection. He intercepts attacks aimed at Xu Mu, condemns Buzzwole’s slaughter of innocents, and understands his Battle Soul as a lifelong commitment to defend his Little Master 14 345 446 447.
Abilities & Skills
Protean
Greninja’s original Ability changes his type to match each move he uses 1 155.
- Defensive timing: Using Dark Pulse allows him to take Psychic-type attacks without damage against Gardevoir and Gallade 75 99.
- Resistance adjustment: After Aerial Ace, his Flying typing reduces the damage from Gallade’s Brick Break 100.
- Concealed advantage: Xu Mu deliberately withholds the explanation for Greninja’s immunity during the Gardevoir battle 75.
Battle Bond / Bond Phenomenon
A system-granted transformation that increases Greninja’s strength and synchronizes him with Xu Mu 4 14.
- Mental coordination: Xu Mu’s commands become battle instinct during their fight with Scarred Charizard; their synchronization also supports the plan against Landorus 14 181.
- Controlled activation: Greninja can resist the transformation or voluntarily end it 4 237.
- Trainer strain: Xu Mu’s first extended use drains him while he continues directing Greninja 15.
- Physical limits: The transformation does not prevent exhaustion. Steelix’s Explosion ends it, and Xu Mu later recalls Greninja rather than expose him to further injury against Hunter A 28 237.
Ninjutsu and Clone Techniques
Ninja Mastery and Rasengan allow Greninja to combine Pokémon moves with ninjutsu. The later system review labels his ability simply as “Ninjutsu” 21 557.
- Shadow Clone Technique: Combines Double Team with ninjutsu to produce solid energy clones capable of fighting and launching real attacks 21 43.
- Water Clones: Provide additional solid doubles; destroying a clone does not injure the original 112.
- Clone-assisted movement: Exhausted clones launch Greninja into the air before dissolving during the Entei battle 21.
- Substitute and Three Body Technique: Evades Gallade’s martial-arts counter with a substitute log and uses ninjutsu to finish the matchup 100.
- Body Flicker: Rapid repositioning lets him reach Ho-Oh in midair and evade Shock Wave 534 535.
- Practical restraint: Uses clones to reach opposing Trainers and subdue nine black-clad attackers in approximately two minutes 112.
Rasengan and Water Shuriken Variants
Greninja’s signature offense combines rotating energy with Water-type attacks 21 99.
- Water Spiral Shuriken: Fuses Rasengan with Water Shuriken. Solid clones multiply the barrage beyond what opponents expecting illusions can defend against 21 28 99.
- Rasengan—Water Pulse: A close-range combination used against Mega Kangaskhan 28.
- Giant Rasenshuriken: Initially requires pairs of clones to form shuriken over a meter across, dozens of times larger than the earlier version 110 111.
- Work Up combinations: Produces seventeen Giant Rasenshuriken against a sleeping Poliwrath after boosting himself 191.
- Super Large Ball Water Spiral Shuriken: Uses this named variant to overwhelm Metagross in their rematch 301.
- Stamina cost: The giant attacks initially leave him panting. Against Moltres, he instead has clones alternate smaller shuriken to conserve stamina and buy time for Work Up 111 280.
Water-Style Techniques and Battle Moves
Greninja has a broad move set beyond his signature clone barrage 1 155.
- Surf and Great Waterfall Jutsu: Combines Surf, Waterfall, and ninjutsu; with proper control, the attack can reach three times Surf’s power or more 236.
- Core attacks: Uses Hydro Pump, Water Pulse, Water Shuriken, Night Slash, and Dark Pulse 1 4 14 15.
- Coverage and movement: Demonstrates Ice Punch, Ice Beam, Aerial Ace, Extrasensory, Shadow Sneak, Agility, and Stomp 43 99 126 191 278.
- Defensive moves: Protect blocks dangerous attacks; Mat Block stops Dragon Rage but cannot block status moves 14 15.
- Status pressure: Toxic progressively weakens Scarred Charizard, while Taunt prevents Gardevoir from using non-damaging moves for three turns 14 15 75.
- Close-range harassment: Uses Scald and Spiral Water Pulse while attacking Moltres from different positions 280.
Sharingan
The system describes the Sharingan as granting enhanced observation, copying, hypnosis, and the ability to perceive and counter illusions 298.
- Combat perception: Reads Metagross’s movements and energy during their rematch 301.
- Move copying: Immediately reproduces Meteor Mash, Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, and Ice Punch 301.
- Stated restriction: Its copying capability excludes techniques requiring a bloodline limit 298.
- Unconfirmed upgrade: Mangekyō Sharingan is offered as a future Time Secret Realm task reward; the documented Metagross fight uses the ordinary Sharingan 298 301.
Saint Battle Soul and Cosmo
Greninja’s Battle Soul extends his protective nature into a Saint-inspired power system. Its potential grows with the depth of his bond with Xu Mu 345 346.
- Cosmo: Identified as the inexhaustible will in his heart to protect others 345.
- Rozan Rising Dragon: Witnesses the technique during awakening and later uses it against Hiroshi’s Absol 345 384.
- Revealed growth path: Bronze Saint: Draco → Gold Saint: Aquarius → Divine Realm: Poseidon. These are stages shown in the awakening vision, not individually confirmed attainments 345.
- Growth requirement: The system explicitly warns that limitless potential does not make him overwhelmingly powerful overnight 345.
Psychological Warfare and Team Leadership
Greninja combines verbal provocation with practical command of the team 114 158 190.
- Provoking mistakes: Keeps Shiftry enraged until repeated Leaf Storm use and exhaustion leave him vulnerable 126.
- Pre-battle disruption: Rattles Poliwrath before Xu Mu activates Battle Bond 191.
- Fallback tactics: When his strongest attacks barely hurt Eternatus, switches to Bubble Mousse, weak water attacks, and disgusting taunts 153.
- Roster management: Selects lineups that give junior teammates experience while concealing the team’s full strength 114 158 165.
- Mentoring: Welcomes Munchlax as a junior and repeatedly recruits Zeraora for intimidating practice sessions 101 457 557.
Relationships
- Xu Mu — Trainer, Little Master, and foremost partner. Greninja’s allegiance becomes voluntary after their first school victory, and Xu Mu later awakens his Battle Soul to preserve his place beside him 4 345 557.
- Xu Feng — First Trainer and the person who sends him to protect Xu Mu. Greninja remains loyal to Xu Mu rather than treating the assignment as a temporary obligation 1 298.
- Xu Feng’s Greninja — Father. Amazed by his son’s clone techniques and Giant Rasenshuriken; Greninja surpasses him within a year 249 345.
- Charizard — Longtime teammate, training partner, and frequent source of “Frog” teasing. They independently challenge the Magma Gym while Charizard is still Charmander 8 9 158 457.
- Dragonite — Fellow senior battler and familiar sparring partner. Dragonite’s success against Articuno spurs Greninja to intensify his own fight with Moltres 280 457.
- Bulbasaur — Junior teammate whom Greninja gives tournament experience. Bulbasaur respects his seniority and their comparable family backgrounds 158.
- Zeraora — Defeated opponent turned junior teammate. Calls Greninja “Big bro” but fears the rough training sessions Greninja repeatedly proposes 426 457 557.
- Eternatus — Initially an overwhelmingly stronger enemy; later an ally who empowers Greninja during the Buzzwole battle 153 447.
- Xu Qingqing — Recognizes Greninja from his younger days. He addresses her as “princess” and offers to discipline her disobedient Pokémon 133.

Trivia
- Greninja’s recurring objection to being called “Frog” rarely deters Xu Mu or Charizard from using the nickname 158 264.

- He once bribes Arceus with chocolate to secure cooperation during a team meeting 158.
- His ninjutsu is explicitly compared with Naruto Uzumaki’s techniques, while his Battle Soul introduces a separate Saint-inspired progression 21 99 345.
