Background / History

Humans and Pokémon live alongside one another in Xu Mu’s world. Wild Pokémon also inhabit Secret Realms, which can appear near settled areas; school leaders warn that encounters there can be deadly 1 3. The world contains both wild communities, such as the Dragonite clan of Meteor Falls, and Pokémon raised or partnered with humans 47.

Xu Feng later identifies the Borderlands as a connection between Xu Mu’s world and another Pokémon World. Secret Realms are described as copies of places from that world, while Legendary Pokémon that appear in them are unique beings rather than copies 251 383. Conflict between the worlds brings Pokémon into battles involving Trainers, criminal organizations, and armies 387 394.

Personality

Pokémon are individuals with their own motives, preferences, and limits. Greninja organizes training and seeks fights even without Xu Mu’s direction; Dragonite enjoys books as well as battle; Celebi prefers healing to frontline combat; and Hoopa values companionship after years of isolation 8 51 187 557.

Their willingness to follow a Trainer cannot be taken for granted. Hoopa agrees to stay with Xu Mu only after being reassured that he will not be confined in a Poké Ball. Ho-Oh, by contrast, initially defends his wild community against Xu Mu and recalls once refusing capture even under threat of death 187 534 539.

Abilities & Skills

Moves and innate Abilities

  • Pokémon use distinct moves and Abilities. Greninja’s Protean changes his type to match the move he uses; Arceus’s Multitype lets him change type with Plates 1 34.
  • Capabilities differ sharply between species and individuals: Celebi heals teammates, while Hoopa can summon other Pokémon, including Legendary Pokémon 393 559.

Evolution and transformations

  • Evolution changes a Pokémon’s form, but the story does not treat it as a process that always occurs at a fixed level. Charmander deliberately held back his own evolution for years 6 367.
  • Mega Evolution and Dynamax can increase battle strength. Dynamax enlarges a Pokémon and grants Max Moves; some Pokémon instead have specialized forms, such as Hoopa Confined and Hoopa Unbound 152 190 201.

Training and independent action

  • Pokémon can train and battle without constant commands: Greninja and Charmander challenge the Magma Gym while Xu Mu sleeps 8 9.
  • Strength alone does not replace preparation. Xu Mu later finds that several powerful, self-taught teammates need systematic work on their battle habits; unsupervised training can also be dangerous if a Pokémon exceeds its limits 71 82.

Relationships

  • Human Trainers — Pokémon may form close, cooperative partnerships with them. Xu Mu treats his team as family, while his Pokémon frequently take initiative in training and battle 8 264 448.
  • Wild communities — Some live together for protection and freedom. Solgaleo’s group offers the young Ho-Oh refuge after humans pursue him 539 540.
  • Criminal organizations — Pokémon can also be targets of capture and manipulation. The Pope deceives Cobalion and his companions about Pokémon taken for the Hunter Guild; Team Rocket’s Dark Balls can capture Legendary Pokémon but do not guarantee obedience 394 481.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Xu Mu’s first team: A Greninja left by his father becomes his Starter, followed by a Charmander chosen from Principal Xiao Tianyang’s Pokémon. The two act independently almost immediately 1 5 8.
  • Training and competition: Xu Mu’s growing team enters Gym battles and tournaments, receives system rewards, and undertakes formal training despite several members already having Elite Four-level strength 9 71 155 298.
  • Conflict between worlds: Pokémon become central to the struggle against Team Rocket at the Borderlands and, later, Xu Mu’s advance into the Pokémon World 394 587.

Trivia

  • Without a Trainer license, a person in Xu Mu’s world may own only one Pokémon; the League also normally limits a Trainer to six Pokémon in battle 5 113.
  • The highest strength tiers made public are, from strongest to weakest, Demigod, Supreme, Champion, Master, and Elite Four 370.
