Background / History
Tatsumaki was born into the wealthy Mitarai family in Tokyo. When she was five—the year Fubuki was born—her parents entrusted her to what they believed was an institution for training Espers. It was actually a research facility that acquired psychic children through fraudulent agreements 49.
She spent three years imprisoned there, undergoing blood extractions every two weeks and being forced to fight monsters. She suppressed her abilities in the hope that the researchers would lose interest and release her. Instead, they deemed her useless and left her locked in her cell when a powerful monster escaped 49.
Blast killed the monster and rescued Tatsumaki at age eight. When she insisted that nobody needed her, he showed her a photograph of Fubuki and urged her to protect her family. His advice to keep growing stronger became the foundation of her protective outlook 49.
The family later moved to the Federation, where the sisters received a Western education. As an adult, Tatsumaki shares ownership of their mansion in Frieza Heights. Their upbringing provided substantial material comfort but little emotional support from their parents 45 115.
Appearance
Tatsumaki is a petite adult frequently mistaken for a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old. Her youthful face and stature contrast with her mature physical proportions 13 113.
- Hair: Thick, bright green curls; difficult to conceal beneath a wig 48 113.
- Usual clothing: A long black dress with a side slit 13 48.
- Psychic effects: Green light surrounds her during flight, defense, and powerful attacks 13 48 252.
- Habitual posture: Often floats a few centimeters above the ground rather than walking 45 73.
- Tournament disguise: Fubuki gathers her curls into a large bun covered by a hat 113.
Personality
Tatsumaki is proud, blunt, and quick to retaliate against insults about her height or apparent age. She attacks Luke after he calls her a “shrimp” and secretly levitates at an amusement-park ticket gate to appear taller. She also dislikes being treated as a younger sister, insisting that Sugar Baby address her as “big sister” 48 74 76.
Her childish behavior is linked to isolation rather than her actual age. After escaping the research facility, she spent little time with anyone outside Fubuki; initially, only Fubuki and Blast truly mattered to her. She craves her sister’s company, complains of boredom, and sometimes hides disappointment behind dismissive remarks 45 49.
In danger, she becomes commanding and highly perceptive. Her devotion to Fubuki can provoke merciless retaliation, but she can also exercise restraint: she spares Homelander, accepts Scarlet Witch’s apology, and ends a confrontation rather than endanger her companions. As friendships develop, her concern expands beyond her sister and rescuer 47 84 89.
Abilities & Skills
Psychokinesis
Tatsumaki exerts immense force without physical contact, manipulating people, objects, terrain, and the air around her 13 48 89.
- Restraint and crushing: Kills Hunt in midair, compresses Homelander’s body, and overpowers Crash Boy’s repulsive force 13 47 73.
- Attack redirection: Deflects Homelander’s laser vision and redirects Queen Maeve’s lightning strike 47 84.
- Large-scale terrain control: Raises nearly all the sand and gravel around the racetrack during the confrontation with The Boys 89.
- City-scale manipulation: Raises an entire city and its underlying earth, severing Psykos’s subterranean tentacles. The elevated land remains connected by a central pillar roughly three to four kilometers across 252.
- Precision: Drives a knife through an attacker’s chest while deliberately sparing his heart, then stops falling men just above the ground 169 170.
- Meteor capture: States that she has caught meteors from the sky 73.
Psychic Barriers and Absolute Defense
Her defensive power operates even without conscious attention. Unlike Homelander’s bodily durability, Tatsumaki’s protection comes from the psychic power she naturally emits 81 135.
- Automatic protection: Forms a barrier while asleep when Scarlet Witch’s telekinesis reaches her 81 82.
- Projectile destruction: Hawkeye’s homing arrows crumble to dust on contact with her shield 83.
- Resistance to spatial attacks: Sugar Baby cannot touch her through the barrier or separate it with her spatial cutting ability 73 74.
- Area protection: Encloses the mansion and courtyard in a dome before fighting Homelander 47.
- Protection of others: Carries companions inside floating shield bubbles and shields Fubuki from Psykos’s pressure 89 248.
- Not invincible: Luke can reach through her barrier, and Psykos breaches it after Tatsumaki diverts power to Fubuki 48 82 248.
Flight and Levitation
Her powers are so deeply integrated into everyday movement that she has rarely bothered walking since learning to stand 45.
- Travels rapidly through the air to reach Fubuki when she is hurt 13.
- Uses psychic force on her own body to remain stationary against Crash Boy’s repulsive attack 73.
- Continues levitating unconsciously, including when intoxicated 45 115.
Psychic Sensing
Tatsumaki can detect powerful presences, track movement, and survey her surroundings without relying solely on sight 73 84.
- Shares a subtle bond with Fubuki that lets her sense her sister’s injuries 13 248.
- Identifies the positions and number of five concealed opponents in a single psychic sweep 84.
- Locates the source of the citywide tentacle attack approximately fifteen kilometers away 247.
- Detects two extraordinarily powerful combatants dozens of kilometers away after killing Psykos, recognizing one as Luke 253.
- Cannot track a continuous movement path when someone genuinely teleports; she recognizes this distinction when Luke arrives with his disciples 73.
Tactical Judgment
Her combat decisions are markedly more mature than her everyday behavior 84 252.
- Prioritizes evacuation and assigns Fubuki responsibility for protecting Yoshiko 84.
- Weighs her ability to defeat enemies against the risk to nearby companions 89.
- Recognizes that Psykos’s regeneration must be countered by cutting off her supply of energy from the city’s inhabitants 251 252.
Limits and Vulnerabilities
- Low physical durability: Her resistance to direct blows is poor; her extraordinary survivability depends on psychic protection 185.
- Divided attention: Protecting Fubuki weakens her personal barrier enough for Psykos to inflict her first battle injury since leaving the institute 248.
- Alcohol sensitivity: Becomes badly intoxicated after reportedly drinking only a sip of sake, losing control of levitation and nearby objects 115.
- Exertion: Lifting the city briefly leaves her pale and breathing heavily, though she quickly steadies herself 252.
- Luke’s resistance: The force that compresses Homelander fails to harm Luke, who walks through her psychic resistance 48.
Relationships
- Mitarai Fubuki — Younger biological sister and the central focus of her protective instincts. Fubuki resents constant intervention but also cares for Tatsumaki and restrains her everyday misbehavior 13 48 78 170.
- Blast — Childhood rescuer and defining role model. His kindness and advice give her a reason to protect her family and pursue strength 49.
- Luke — Initially an antagonistic guest whose resistance unsettles her. His gentle head pat recalls Blast’s rescue, and he later helps Fubuki retrieve her when she is drunk 48 49 115.
- Sugar Baby / Tanghulu — Close friend and playmate. They enjoy power-based games and amusement-park rides; Sugar Baby catches Tatsumaki after Psykos knocks her unconscious and protects her during the battle 74 76 78 248 249.
- Crash Boy / Brain Pop — Proud rival within Luke’s circle. Their first encounter becomes a psychic clash, while later competition includes mutual accusations of bumper-car cheating 73 74 78.
- Yoshiko — Household companion who teaches her about the stars. Tatsumaki makes Yoshiko’s evacuation a priority during the ambush 73 84.
- Homelander — Defeated enemy. His humiliation leads him to seek The Boys’ assistance in an assassination attempt 47 82 83.
- Psykos — Former researcher who exploited her during childhood and later copied part of her powers using preserved genetic samples. Their confrontation ends with Tatsumaki killing her 247 248 253.
- Starlight — Ally whose empowered assault gives Tatsumaki time to recover and dismantle Psykos’s energy supply 251 252.
