Background and History
Serizawa works during school holidays to pay for his younger sister Yoshiko’s piano lessons. At Tanuki Izakaya, he catches a customer putting empty plates back on the conveyor belt to avoid paying for them. The customer, Frozer, later confronts him outside and provokes him into swinging his metal bat 28.
Frozer’s power negates physical damage and reflects attacks back at the attacker. Serizawa identifies how it works, then keeps striking despite mounting injuries. His blows grow stronger until a final swing exceeds Frozer’s defensive limit and kills him. Badly hurt, Serizawa rushes to collect Yoshiko from her lesson 28 29 30.
Serizawa had also escaped an attempted Vought capture, defeating the sixth-ranked Fear Nova member Hundred-Ghost Machine Operator despite placing only seventh in the selection contest’s physical assessment. Fubuki later tells him the attack was connected to Vought and recruits him into the Blizzard Group. He joins her and Luke as the group’s core trio 17 30.
After Homelander targets Fubuki, Serizawa and Yoshiko move with the group to the Mitarai Mansion. Serizawa is astonished by its wealth and initially mistakes Fubuki’s older sister Tatsumaki for a child 48.
During a confrontation with Vought, Serizawa faces Queen Maeve while Fubuki and Starlight fight Lamplighter. Maeve tears open his abdomen and electrocutes him severely enough to leave him apparently dead. He rises again, overwhelms her lightning shield, breaks her arm, and nearly strikes her skull; Maeve escapes by flying away. Once the fight ends, Serizawa collapses from exhaustion but remains alive 60 61. Fubuki and Starlight bring him back to the mansion, where Yoshiko helps support him after confirming that he is stable 73.
Fubuki later enters Serizawa in Vought International’s Rising Star Tournament under the alias Zekin, disguising him and repainting his bat. He wins an opening regional match against a contestant whose “Death Coil” consists of moving armpit hair; Serizawa uses only enough force to knock him unconscious 112 117 120. In the finals, he fights Azhe, whom Fubuki identifies from Vought-related records as Zhebulizi. Zhebulizi’s poisonous claws nearly render Serizawa unconscious, but Serizawa strikes his own head to resist the toxin and intensify his fighting spirit. He defeats Zhebulizi with a devastating bat swing, then refuses a stretcher despite his own potentially fatal injuries 139 140 141 142 143 144.
Serizawa subsequently faces Superalloy Darkshine. His strength continues to rise under Darkshine’s blows, and he develops a new bat technique at the brink of his physical limits, but Darkshine wins their match virtually unscathed 179 180 181 183. Serizawa is hospitalized afterward. During a video call with Yoshiko, he tears off his bandages to reassure her, inadvertently reopening a wound that he hurriedly hides from her 190.
When Psykos’s fused, tentacled body attacks Las Vegas, Serizawa joins Fubuki and the others in seeking its source. Unable to fly with them, he runs through the obstructed streets. Later, after seeing Tatsumaki unconscious, he pushes Fubuki clear of a psychic disc and takes a gash to his arm, joking about his ability to grow stronger when hurt to steady her 247 249.
Appearance
Serizawa is a teenager of about seventeen or eighteen, with slicked-back hair and a solid build that is not unusually large 28.
- Carries a jet-black metal bat 28.
- Is visibly bloodied after his fight with Frozer 29 30.
- Queen Maeve’s lightning leaves his hair frizzy and his body badly charred 59 60.
- For the tournament, he wears a long-haired wig that covers his left eye. His conspicuous competitor outfit includes a black tank top and loose, chained jeans, while his bat is painted in red, white, and blue stripes 112 116.
Personality
Serizawa is devoted to Yoshiko: he works to fund her lessons, hurries to collect her on time, and treats her to oden even after a difficult fight. Yoshiko worries about how often he fights but believes he only fights people who have done wrong 28 30.
He is quick-tempered and proud, though he can restrain the force of a blow against someone he believes to be ordinary. He objects to customers dodging payment and to wasting food; when faced with a dangerous opponent, he studies the matchup before committing to a risky strategy 28 29.
Serizawa refuses outside help in a tournament match and holds back against an obnoxious opponent who has not crossed his moral line. His pride and resolve can also become self-destructive: he deliberately injures himself to stay conscious against Zhebulizi and later disrupts his own recovery while trying to spare Yoshiko worry 117 142 190. He is attached to his bat and angrily retrieves it when Tatsumaki takes it, but chooses not to escalate their dispute 76.
Abilities & Skills
Fighting Spirit
Serizawa’s attacks grow stronger as his fighting spirit rises, even while he suffers worsening injuries 29.
- Repeated reflected blows leave him with severe bruising, blood loss, and broken bones, but his swings continue to gain force 29.
- At the height of the fight, he delivers a bat strike powerful enough to break through Frozer’s physical-damage negation 29.
- The strategy is dangerous: Serizawa believes that if his final strike fails, the reflected force will kill him 29.
- After surviving Maeve’s lightning, his blows split the ground, scatter her lightning shield, and break her arm. His wounds remain open throughout the fight; his rising strength is not instantaneous healing 60 61.
- Against Zhebulizi, Psykos measures his combat power rising as his vital signs decline, eventually reaching 40,000. Against Darkshine, her reading climbs past 60,000 142 143 180.
- Against Darkshine, Serizawa develops Aura: Buddha’s Shame Spiral, a rapidly accelerating, revolving bat swing that generates a visible vortex of air 181.
Resilience and Recovery
- Serizawa is unharmed by the reflected force of his first, restrained blow against Frozer 28.
- He continues fighting after injuries that would have stopped most people. Yoshiko says he usually recovers quickly, though she fears his repeated fights will eventually cause serious harm 29 30.
- He survives extensive burns and electrocution from Maeve without his wounds healing during the battle. Once his fighting spirit subsides, he loses consciousness from exhaustion 60 61.
- His skull withstands repeated self-inflicted bat blows that would have crushed an ordinary person’s head. The pain briefly counters Zhebulizi’s numbing neurotoxin, but causes severe bleeding and further endangers his life 142.
- He recovers quickly enough to leave the emergency ward after fighting Darkshine, although reopening a wound demonstrates that he has not fully healed 190.
Speed and Combat Judgment
Serizawa can move faster than ordinary spectators can follow. In his regional tournament match, his movement behind his opponent appears to be teleportation, and even the superhero referees see little more than a blur. He deliberately restrains his finishing strike to avoid killing the man 117.
He identifies Frozer’s damage reflection through probing blows and recognizes Zhebulizi’s jumping-based attacks and poisonous fingers while fighting him 29 139 140.
Power Progression
| Stage | Development | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fight with Frozer | His blows increase in force as his injuries and fighting spirit mount, culminating in a strike that exceeds Frozer’s physical-defense limit. | 29 |
| Fight with Queen Maeve | Survives near-fatal lightning attacks and grows strong enough to break Maeve’s shield and arm, forcing her to retreat. | 60 61 |
| Regional tournament | Demonstrates movement too fast for most observers to see and wins while holding back most of his striking strength. | 117 |
| Fight with Zhebulizi | Resists a numbing neurotoxin through self-inflicted pain; Psykos records his combat power rising to 40,000 before he wins. | 142 143 |
| Fight with Superalloy Darkshine | Continues gaining strength despite disabling injuries; Psykos records a value above 60,000, and Serizawa develops Aura: Buddha’s Shame Spiral. Darkshine nevertheless wins. | 179 180 181 183 |
