History
Lamplighter’s retirement prompts Vought to hold a public contest for one place on The Seven. More than 16,000 people enter. Luke and Starlight both earn perfect physical-test scores, but Vought chooses Starlight after the interviews 6 7 10. The contest also serves an undisclosed purpose: identifying powered contestants outside Vought’s control. Afterward, Vought sends operatives to capture them 10 11.
Starlight’s induction is staged as a major public event. Vice President Madelyn uses the welcome speech to promote Vought’s earnings, films, partnerships, and merchandise before introducing the new member 17. Starlight’s early experience with the team is far less celebratory: The Deep sexually pressures her backstage, and a subsequent meeting exposes disputes over money and status 18 20.
For Starlight’s first assignment, Homelander pairs her with The Deep to stop smugglers at a harbor 20. The Deep instead arranges for Deep Sea King to attack her in revenge for rejecting him. Luke saves Starlight and kills the monster before Homelander arrives 21 23.
Translucent’s death brings a direct threat to the team. Homelander responds by calling a roundtable meeting, warning several members about their conduct and questioning Starlight’s connection to Luke. When he accuses her of betrayal, Queen Maeve steps between them 42 43 44.
Vought stages a lavish funeral for Translucent, displaying an empty coffin while Homelander blames the Seven Star Society for his death and declares war on supervillain organizations. Starlight performs a memorial song and joins him for a scripted interview. The event increases public support for Vought 51. Edgar then appoints Stormfront to Translucent’s seat without first consulting Homelander. Madelyn announces that Homelander and the newcomer will lead the campaign together, despite his objection 54 55.
During the campaign, Stormfront, A-Train, and Black Noir attack the Villainous League’s headquarters. Stormfront is badly injured in a later fight with a Compound V-mutated opponent, but Black Noir holds him off while A-Train removes the League’s cash 66 67 72. Within days, The Seven report dismantling more than a dozen criminal groups in San Andreas, although the Villainous King and Butcher’s group remain at large 90.
Starlight’s investigation of Vought’s secret research makes her return to the team increasingly untenable 55 77. At a later meeting, Homelander threatens to kill her if she has betrayed The Seven. Queen Maeve discovers that he is hiding an injury, shaking other members’ belief that their leader is invincible 90. Months later, Vought publicly accuses the absent Starlight of colluding with criminals and stealing Compound V. She does not respond publicly, and much of the public accepts the accusation 110.
The Rising Star Tournament puts the team’s standing to a public test. Vought promises the top five newcomers challenges against members of The Seven, with the tournament winner entitled to face Homelander 110 111. In the challenge matches, Queen Maeve defeats Han, Greedy Wolf defeats Black Noir, Stormfront wins by tournament rules after she and Crash Boy both collapse, and Golden Flash defeats A-Train. With the sides tied 2–2, Luke and Homelander enter the final match 238 239. The team’s subsequent status is not established after government leaders move to dismantle Vought International 257.
Organization and Public Image
- Corporate ownership: Vought manages The Seven and profits from their endorsements, merchandise, films, and public appearances. The team brings in tens of billions of dollars annually 2 17 25.
- Assignments: Homelander directs missions and tells Starlight that members work in pairs 20.
- Internal finances: A-Train learns that he receives a three-percent share of movie profits while other members receive four percent 20.
- Manufactured conflict: Vought’s secret Supervillain Project supplies powered people to criminal organizations to preserve demand for superheroes. Not every member of The Seven is involved in the project 10 54.
- Image versus conduct: Vought helps promote Homelander’s approachable public persona, while concealing killings he has committed 1 2.
- Corporate authority: Homelander chairs the team’s meetings, but Edgar can appoint a member and assign joint leadership of an operation over his objections 54.
- Commercial value: Vought considers leasing the long-standing Queen Maeve to New York as its exclusive hero while keeping her in The Seven. Madelyn initially quotes $1 billion per year; a later proposed deal is worth $4.8 billion over five years and would allow Maeve to join team meetings remotely 95 98.
- Public standing: The Seven’s reputation as Vought’s strongest heroes comes under pressure as the number of powered people rises and tournament newcomers prove capable of defeating members of the team 110 182 238 239.
- Performance enhancement: A-Train fears Vought may use Compound V to strengthen the team before its tournament challenges. Stormfront’s and A-Train’s markedly improved performances lead Fubuki to suspect they have taken it, though she does not know whether Stormfront acted on Vought’s orders or independently 182 239.
