Background / History

Butcher spent eight years searching for his missing wife, Becca, and pursuing revenge against Homelander. Grace Mallory had earlier recruited him to assemble The Boys, but the group broke apart after Lamplighter burned her grandchildren to death. Butcher kept fighting Vought afterward 17 36 44.

Rorschach contacted Butcher by revealing that he knew about Becca and Butcher’s forged FBI credentials. Butcher joined his proposed operation against The Deep, then gradually accepted Rorschach’s leadership as his knowledge of Vought and Compound V proved useful 5 25. Rorschach’s assurance that Becca was alive kept Butcher with the team, despite his frustration with the pace of the search 17 26 33.

Butcher helped rescue Becca and her son Ryan from a guarded Vought property. Learning that Ryan was Homelander’s son shocked him, but he agreed to protect the boy for Becca’s sake 39 40. He later gave Compound V evidence to CIA deputy director Susan, asking in return for protection for the team’s families. The resulting hospital investigation brought Vought’s experiments on children into public view 43 44.

Personality

Butcher is driven by his love for Becca and his desire to kill Homelander. He is quick to accept a chance to strike at a Supe and frequently presses Rorschach to move faster, even when doing so could expose the team. He can restrain that anger when Becca’s safety is at stake 5 33 36.

His methods can be brutal, but he also looks out for his teammates. He urged Marvin to leave the fight for his family’s sake and sought CIA protection for the loved ones Vought might target 32 44.
