History

Compound V and the superhero industry

Compound V is the source of the powers Vought presents as a natural gift. Rorschach identifies its production as the foundation of the company’s manufactured “superhero dream” and concludes that defeating Homelander alone would leave Vought’s business intact 15 26. Vought’s charity, Samaritan’s Embrace, is later linked to hospitals where children have been given the drug 44 49.

Vought also treats powered people as assets beyond The Seven. It confines Becca and her son Ryan under surveillance, regarding Ryan—Homelander’s son—as exceptionally valuable 40 41. Compound V reaches gangs and is used in the creation of so-called Supervillains, a threat that helps Vought make the case for its heroes 27 32 35 43.

Scandals and exposure

The Deep’s public scandal forces Vought to announce his transfer to Atlanta and defer activities supporting its national-defense ambitions 7. Its attempt to compromise a skeptical senator with a shapeshifter fails when Rorschach exposes the setup 14.

Vought sends Homelander and Queen Maeve to rescue a hijacked passenger plane, hoping success will revive support for its defense bill. After Homelander damages the cockpit and abandons the passengers, Rorschach saves them under the name “Superman.” Passenger footage damages Homelander’s reputation; Vought responds with a press conference that acknowledges the damaged plane while concealing his conduct 18 19 21 22.

As Rorschach’s group exposes the Compound V operation, Vought’s stock falls and its leadership searches for the source of the leaks 44 49 50. Further evidence sent to major media outlets shows Homelander destroying the plane’s cockpit controls and exposes Stormfront’s past as Liberty, intensifying the crisis 50.
