Ch. 1741The Traitor
Plot and events
- Albeck’s family has been arrested after he defected from the Empire. He accepts the name Traitor and is welcomed into the Chaos Cult as its eighth Elite—though the injured Ratfolk Priest corrects this to the seventh.
- The Priest reports that the Baron cannot be saved: the Obsidian Sacred Mark killed him. The cultists complain that they have followed the plan arranged by the mysterious Legion Commander and demand an escape route.
- Annan returns to the Ring Plaza, where State Religion troops are searching for the escape passage. He encounters Cleric Gandhi, who reveals that the Deputy Warden survived.
- Annan asks for the Baron’s body. Though Gandhi initially hesitates, the Deputy Warden eventually agrees to lend it to Annan, after explaining that the Baron’s soul remains trapped inside.
- In exchange, the Deputy Warden asks Annan to enter the Chaos Cult and secretly help Albeck and the other infiltrators gain the cult’s trust.
Character developments and interactions
- Albeck accepts his new identity as Traitor and remains composed despite his family’s arrest. He refuses to answer the Priest’s questions about his nephew.
- The Ratfolk Priest is gravely wounded and frustrated with both Albeck and the Gray Mist, but has little leverage over Albeck, who is his equal in rank.
- Annan shows his usual audacity, bargaining for the Baron’s body and hinting that he has deduced the Deputy Warden’s secret plan. He also insists that his involvement with dangerous factions serves a larger purpose.
- The Deputy Warden is badly injured but still sharp and authoritative. He warns Annan against getting too close to dangerous groups, then entrusts him with a covert mission.
- Gandhi is identified as the Deputy Warden’s successor, establishing that he is trusted and explaining his role in the exchange.
Significant themes
- Betrayal and sacrifice: Albeck’s defection costs his family their freedom, while his new name marks a deliberate break with his former life.
- Trust and infiltration: The Empire’s operatives must earn the Chaos Cult’s confidence before they can help from within.
- Risk versus purpose: The Deputy Warden sees Annan’s involvement as dangerous; Annan accepts the risk because he wants to do something meaningful.
- Power and leverage: Annan uses insight and implied threats to negotiate, but ultimately gains the body by agreeing to serve the Deputy Warden’s larger plan.
