Saiyans are a rare warrior race in the universe, originating from Planet Sadala in ancient times, where they originally comprised two branches: bestial Saiyans with tails and rational Saiyans without tails 248 404 414. An ancient war forced the tail-less rational Saiyans to migrate to Planet Sala, while the bestial Saiyans later settled on Planet Vegeta 248 404. For most of their history, Saiyans lived like mercenaries, undertaking planet-clearing and extermination missions for major universal powers, earning them a poor reputation across the galaxy 113 204.

Because of their warlike nature and lack of individual power to resist external threats, the Universe 7 Saiyans on Planet Vegeta eventually submitted to Frieza's forces after a failed rebellion, becoming frontline combatants 205 215 224. Years later, Planet Vegeta was destroyed, leaving only a few survivors—including Bardock, Gine, Son Goku, Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, Broly, and Shasri—many of whom eventually aligned with the Shepherd God Faction on Earth 301 327 329 504. Meanwhile, a separate population of tail-less Saiyans resided on Planet Sala in Universe 6, where they had lost the knowledge of the Super Saiyan transformation until it was later reintroduced 248 423.
