Background
Rise in the North Galaxy
As King Cold's youngest son, Frieza received a large southern portion of his father's territory and established his headquarters in the First Sector. Eager to earn King Cold's approval and avoid being eclipsed by his elder brother Cooler, he sought to make his domain feared throughout the North Galaxy 195.
King Cold considered Frieza the Frieza Clan's most talented member, but warned him never to provoke Majin Buu or Lord Beerus. The warning genuinely unsettled Frieza, who had believed his family untouchable 195.
Frieza's expanding force controlled roughly one quarter of the North Galaxy. His Ginyu Force served as his elite combat unit, while trusted retainers such as Captain Ginyu and Shambo handled military reports and internal affairs 127 239.
Subjugation of Planet Vegeta
After learning of the Saiyans and the legend of the Super Saiyan, Frieza and King Cold decided that the independent warrior race should be brought under their control. Frieza ordered Captain Ginyu to prepare the invasion of Planet Vegeta 196.
The Saiyan King surrendered after his detectors registered Frieza at no less than 500,000 Battle Power before burning out. Frieza destroyed a spacecraft carrying escaping Saiyans and imposed direct rule, including registration and monitoring of Saiyan births through Frieza Force personnel 205 245.
Battles with Mu Yang
Mu Yang destroyed Frieza Planet to draw Frieza out, forcing the emperor into battle. Frieza began at 530,000 Battle Power, but Mu Yang's attacks drove him through his transformations and ultimately into his final form 239 240 241 242.
Mu Yang's avatar used seven-times Kaioken and self-destruction to force Frieza to defend at full power. Believing his opponent dead, Frieza began planning a new headquarters in the Second Sector 243.
Twelve years later, Frieza confronted Mu Yang and Meixia on Monster Planet. Believing them to be Super Saiyans, he resolved to destroy Planet Vegeta after killing them. He eventually released his 120 million-Battle-Power ultimate state, but Mu Yang and Meixia exploited his poor power control and coordination weaknesses 287 289 290.
Frieza attempted to kill them by detonating Monster Planet's core with a Planet Piercing Bullet. He survived the planet's destruction but was left severely injured, reverted to base form, and was later located while being placed in a repair pod 292 293.
Death, Punishment, and Resurrection
Mu Yang killed Frieza with the Annihilation technique before he could self-destruct again. Frieza was reduced to dust despite declaring that he would not accept dying at Mu Yang's hands 293.
In the Underworld, King Yama sentenced Frieza to hell. At Mu Yang's suggestion, his punishment included repeated musical performances by little angels using Earth instruments 294.
Following Frieza's death, King Cold and Cooler fought over his former territories. Cooler ultimately seized most of them, while King Cold secured a smaller share 295.
Frieza later participated in the Tournament of Power while dead and bearing a halo. Whis resurrected him as a reward afterward, and Frieza chose to rebuild the Frieza Force as a smaller, more strategically managed organization rather than resume indiscriminate expansion 559 562 571.
Appearance
Frieza is a short member of the Frieza Clan with blood-red eyes, a tail, and a deceptively compact frame. His appearance changes dramatically between his power-suppressing forms and his final or Golden states.
- Base form — purplish-red skin, a purple leathery head plate, lateral horns, and an egg-shaped hovercraft used as a seat 240.
- Second form — larger, more imposing physique with upward-curving horns, resembling King Cold's usual form 241.
- Third form — a monstrous, alien-like body with an elongated purple head 241.
- Final form — smaller and streamlined, predominantly snow-white with purple patches, purple lips, scarlet eyes, and a flexible white tail 241 242.
- Golden Frieza — body coated in golden energy and gold-colored transformation features 562 643.
Personality
Frieza is cold-blooded, cruel, and tyrannical, though he deliberately presents himself as a refined and gentlemanly ruler. He expects absolute obedience, treats disobedience as intolerable, and casually kills subordinates who deliver unwelcome news 239 240.
His early rule is driven by ambition and insecurity. He wants to prove himself to King Cold, compete with Cooler, and establish himself as the unquestioned master of the North Galaxy 195 239. He is highly prideful, particularly regarding the title of Galactic Emperor, and reacts to humiliation with intense hatred and a desire for revenge 241 293.
Despite his innate power, Frieza initially disdains training and relies on suppressed transformations and raw energy. His defeats by Mu Yang and Meixia force him to acknowledge that this complacency was a mistake 240 289 293. After his resurrection, he becomes more restrained and strategic around beings above his level, particularly Lord Beerus 571 643.
Abilities & Skills
Transformations and Power Suppression
Frieza suppresses his overwhelming natural power through several lower forms rather than transforming solely to gain strength.
- His base form is a deliberate energy-conserving state, not his true maximum 240 245.
- Releasing transformations restores lost limbs and tail while sharply increasing his Battle Power 241.
- His final form can be pushed from 60 million to 120 million Battle Power, though full output initially strains his control 242 289.
- Golden Frieza is comparable to Super Saiyan Blue and is used in high-level battles against Universe 7 and other-universe fighters 562 643.
Ki Manipulation
Frieza can expend vast quantities of energy in destructive ranged attacks.
- Finger beams — rapid, laser-like energy shots capable of threatening fighters with Battle Powers in the tens of millions 290.
- Stardust Breaker — a blood-red energy attack used against Mu Yang's Kikoho 242.
- Planet Piercing Bullet — a powerful attack that penetrates a planet's crust and destabilizes its core, used to destroy Monster Planet 292.
- He can destroy an entire planet with a single gesture when using sufficient force 195.
Durability and Regeneration
Frieza's body contains immense concentrated energy that protects vital areas, making him difficult to kill even while in a suppressed state.
- Mu Yang could injure and dismember him in base form but could not immediately kill him because of the energy protecting his core 240.
- His second-form transformation regenerated his severed limbs and tail 241.
- He survived the destruction of Monster Planet, though he was critically wounded and forced back into base form 292 293.
Combat Limitations
Frieza's immense reserves do not compensate fully for his technical shortcomings.
- Mu Yang judges his fighting techniques crude compared with his raw strength 290.
- He initially has difficulty controlling his full 120 million-Battle-Power state, allowing Mu Yang and Meixia to disrupt his rhythm through coordinated attacks 289 290.
- Golden Frieza consumes more stamina than some divine Saiyan transformations 650.
Equipment and Resources
- Egg-shaped hovercraft — personal spacecraft and throne used during meetings and travel; destroyed during Mu Yang's assault 239 240.
- Battle suit — worn in base form; destroyed when Mu Yang attacked Frieza's spacecraft 240.
- Frieza Force — galaxy-spanning military organization with fortress planets, aerial fortresses, large-scale energy detectors, and extensive intelligence networks 195 239 293.
- Ginyu Force — Frieza's prized special combat squad, led by Captain Ginyu 195 239.
Relationships
- King Cold — father and political patron. Frieza seeks his approval, while King Cold uses Frieza's loyalty to counterbalance Cooler 195 217.
- Cooler — elder brother and territorial rival. Frieza resents Cooler's greater influence and yields territory rather than confront him directly 195 239.
- Captain Ginyu — trusted commander of the Ginyu Force; Frieza values his reports and leadership despite the force's failures 196 239.
- Shambo — trusted subordinate and adviser who recommends investigating Mu Yang after the Ginyu Force's defeat 217 239.
- Mu Yang — primary adversary who repeatedly humiliates Frieza, destroys his headquarters, and ultimately kills him with Annihilation 239 240 293.
- Meixia — Mu Yang's partner in the battle on Monster Planet; her gravity attack and energy blades severely injure Frieza 289 290.
- Son Goku — Saiyan rival. Following his resurrection, Frieza and Goku maintain a tense respect while both intend to keep improving 571.
- Vegeta — sparring opponent under Beerus's order; Frieza initially underestimates him before recognizing Super Blue Saiyan as a threat to Golden Frieza 643.
- Lord Beerus — a being Frieza fears and treats with caution. Beerus permits him to serve Universe 7 only if he works diligently and does not scheme against him 195 643.
- Cell — temporary Time Patrol partner assigned with Frieza to repair a timeline deviation involving an empowered alternate Frieza 661 663.
Alternate Counterparts
- Golden Frieza of Trunks' timeline — an alternate Frieza who was killed by Mu Yang soon after conquering Planet Vegeta. He later appears alongside Golden Cooler while seeking the Black Star Dragon Balls 633.
- Evil Frieza — a timeline-deviant Frieza empowered and controlled by a Black Star Dragon Ball embedded in his chest. He defeats Super Saiyan Son Goku on Planet Namek before Frieza and Cell intervene 661 662.
- Frieza's response to Evil Frieza — he dismisses the corrupted counterpart as “useless trash” and refuses to acknowledge him as the ruler of the universe 662.
