"The collapse of the Magic Net sent the elements across the Planes into a frenzy. Countless spellcasters in the empire lost their ability to cast spells. Floating Cities in the skies and the Outer Void crashed one after another. Legions of mages died. Then the lowly races that served the empire rose in rebellion, while the Churches of the Gods fanned the flames from behind the scenes. Our empire fell."
As he spoke, the old man began to tremble, plainly remembering something terrible.
To others, the collapse of the Magic Net was no more than a few lines in a history book. Even the most emotional reader would feel, at most, regret for that flourishing age of Magic. But for the old man, who had lived through it, the collapse was a catastrophe that had destroyed his country and his home.
Why does that sound like a Game server reboot wiping out a major guild? The thought crossed Jiang Hao's mind as he listened.
In theory, the players could gather again after the server reboot and rebuild their guild. But this particular guild—the Magic Empire—had tried to replace the game companies and made enemies of the lot of them. The companies had joined forces to wipe it out.
Still, what happened to those Mages explains why the gods insisted on building their own Divine Power networks instead of letting their priests cast through the Magic Net.
Maintaining those networks costs a great deal of Divine Power, but at least each god has their own server. They don't have to worry about someone else deleting their accounts, or their priests losing the ability to cast Divine Spells when another server crashes.
But a few things still bothered him.
Jiang Hao spoke. "Three questions."
"First: who were the 'great powers' supporting you?"
